Water and peace go hand-in hand. World Water Day 2024
Volunteering in Care Homes Project
1. Volunteering in Care Homes
Project
Sharing time and talents; building
caring communities
2. What are the Project’s aims?
To explore the impact of volunteering
roles on older residents' quality of
life.
To increase confidence of care home
providers from the public, private
and voluntary sectors to develop
volunteering involvement in their
homes.
To develop our understanding of the
factors that create successful
volunteer engagement in care
homes.
To develop stronger links between
care homes and their local
communities.
To identify a national standard of
good practice in volunteering.
3. Why is this relevant?
Health & Social Care Act; “The system will focus on personalised care
that reflects individuals’ health and care needs…”
NICE quality standard “Older people in care homes should be
encouraged to take an active role in choosing and defining activities that
are meaningful to them”.
Francis report; “The patient must be put first in all what the NHS does”.
Caring for our Future; “help people share their time, talents and skills
with others in their community”

5. What will we deliver?
Each site will engage with a minimum of two care homes and 70-80 residents.
Volunteer training programmes will have been designed and tested for this
sector.
There will be five opportunities for sharing findings and learning from other pilot
sites together with a wider network of stakeholders.
A suite of good practice documents, case studies and video guides to support
care home staff in working effectively with volunteers and vice versa.
There will be an interim evaluation report and a final report at the end of the
Project.
Where possible care homes will be supported to take over the volunteer
management role and undergo the Investing in Volunteers Accreditation.
6. What is the purpose of today?
Share our progress
Learn from your
experiences
Prepare for some of the
forthcoming challenges
Share existing good
practice
Establish a network that
will guide the project
through its lifetime
