USDA BUILDING BLOCKS FOR
CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE
AND FORESTRY
3/1/2016 1
What is Climate-Smart Agriculture and
Forestry?
โ€ข Promotes increases in agricultural and forest
productivity and farm and forest incomes;
โ€ข Builds greater resilience to climate change for
forest and agricultural systems;
โ€ข Reduces and removes greenhouse gas
emissions associated with agriculture, forests,
and land use change; and
โ€ข Increases renewable energy production from
farms and forest biomass.
3/1/2016 2
Background
โ€ข U.S. Commitment โ€“ 26-28% reduction in GHG emissions
below 2005 levels by 2025
โ€ข USDA is well-positioned to contribute
โ€ข One of the only departments that can both reduce GHG emissions
and store carbon
โ€ข Goal dovetails with much of the work that agencies are already
doing (e.g., Soil Health Initiative, forest restoration, climate change
adaptation)
โ€ข Secretaryโ€™s announcement โ€“ April 23 at Michigan State
โ€ข Outlined the building blocks
โ€ข Established a goal of reducing emissions by 120 MMTCO2e per
year by 2025
โ€ข Announced early actions by industry and nonprofit partners
โ€ข International Climate Agreement (UNFCCC)
3/1/2016 3
Principles of the USDA Building Blocks
โ€ข Voluntary and incentive-based โ€“ Building on existing
legislation and our history of โ€œcooperative conservation.โ€
โ€ข Focused on multiple economic and environmental
benefits โ€“ Through efficiency improvements, improved
yields, or reduced risks.
โ€ข Meet the needs of producers โ€“ By focusing on working
farms, ranches, forests, and production systems.
โ€ข Assess progress and measure success โ€“ Through
quantitative goals and objectives.
โ€ข Cooperative and focused on building partnerships โ€“
With industry, farm groups, and conservation
organizations.
3/1/2016 4
Adaptation and Mitigation
โ€ข Tied closely together
โ€ข Used to frame the
discussion about
climate change

USDA Building Blocks for Climate-Smart Agriculture and Forestry

  • 1. USDA BUILDING BLOCKS FOR CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY 3/1/2016 1
  • 2. What is Climate-Smart Agriculture and Forestry? โ€ข Promotes increases in agricultural and forest productivity and farm and forest incomes; โ€ข Builds greater resilience to climate change for forest and agricultural systems; โ€ข Reduces and removes greenhouse gas emissions associated with agriculture, forests, and land use change; and โ€ข Increases renewable energy production from farms and forest biomass. 3/1/2016 2
  • 3. Background โ€ข U.S. Commitment โ€“ 26-28% reduction in GHG emissions below 2005 levels by 2025 โ€ข USDA is well-positioned to contribute โ€ข One of the only departments that can both reduce GHG emissions and store carbon โ€ข Goal dovetails with much of the work that agencies are already doing (e.g., Soil Health Initiative, forest restoration, climate change adaptation) โ€ข Secretaryโ€™s announcement โ€“ April 23 at Michigan State โ€ข Outlined the building blocks โ€ข Established a goal of reducing emissions by 120 MMTCO2e per year by 2025 โ€ข Announced early actions by industry and nonprofit partners โ€ข International Climate Agreement (UNFCCC) 3/1/2016 3
  • 4. Principles of the USDA Building Blocks โ€ข Voluntary and incentive-based โ€“ Building on existing legislation and our history of โ€œcooperative conservation.โ€ โ€ข Focused on multiple economic and environmental benefits โ€“ Through efficiency improvements, improved yields, or reduced risks. โ€ข Meet the needs of producers โ€“ By focusing on working farms, ranches, forests, and production systems. โ€ข Assess progress and measure success โ€“ Through quantitative goals and objectives. โ€ข Cooperative and focused on building partnerships โ€“ With industry, farm groups, and conservation organizations. 3/1/2016 4
  • 5. Adaptation and Mitigation โ€ข Tied closely together โ€ข Used to frame the discussion about climate change โ€ข Need to discuss both 3/1/2016 5
