TiMS Conference 2012
School Prize Guidelines
ICSM Surgical Society invites abstracts from students from all UK and Ireland universities on the
following topic:
“Which innovation has been the most influential in changing the face of medicine in
the last decade?”
The authors of shortlisted abstracts will be invited to prepare a poster presentation of A1 size of their
chosen topic. These posters will on display throughout TiMS 2012 and will be judged on Sunday, 18th
March 2012.
There are 2 categories which shall be judged separately:
- School (School Students aged 13 -18yrs)
- University (Students enrolled at university). University students DO NOT have to be studying
medicine. The aim of the conference is to encourage students from all disciplines to think
about the future of our healthcare.
1. The topic you write about can be from any discipline, but must relate to innovation in medicine or
surgery in an obvious manner.
2. The word limit is 250 words excluding titles, sub-titles, references etc.
3. There are many referencing styles in use. It is important to be consistent regardless of what style
you use. We recommend the following format:
Journal papers:- Author’s name (date of publication), title of paper, journal title, volume, page
numbers.
Books:- Author’s name (date of publication), title of book, edition, publisher and page
numbers.
3. As with any work, plagiarism is not taken lightly. Any evidence of plagiarism will result in
immediate disqualification from the prize.
4. A copy of your abstract together with your name, medical school and year of study should be sent
to surgical.soc@imperial.ac.uk by Midnight, Monday, 27th February 2012.

6. All submissions must be in the form of a Microsoft Word document and include a word count.
Please adhere strictly to the word count. If the word count exceeds 250 words, your abstract will be
excluded.
7. Receipt of an abstract will be acknowledged by email within 24 hours.
8. The authors of the shortlisted abstracts will be contacted no later than Monday, 5th March 2012
and further guidelines will be issued for the production of posters.
9. Entrants into the competition must be registered to attend TiMS 2012. To purchase your ticket,

10. The work submitted should be your own original work, which you have not submitted for
publication or have already published. Past winners and shortlisted candidates of previous ICSM
Surgical Society competitions are eligible to compete but previously submitted work will not be
accepted.
11. Prizes: The winner (as decided by our judging panel) will be awarded a winner’s certificate, and a
prize. Runners-up will be awarded certificates of merit.

quickly as possible. Unfortunately, we can’t give you any advice as to style and content of the
abstracts submitted, so please do not direct any queries of this nature to us.
