A friend asked what tips I had for presenting using powerpoint.
I use powerpoint at least twice a week for pretty heavy content within a corporate environment... making the information 'sticky' is critical
1. Delivering Training With
PowerPoint
What to do and of course the big No-No’s.

2. A Powerful Tool
As with all power, comes great responsibility
• Don’t bore your audience.
• Don’t talk AT them through the screen.
• Don’t use PowerPoint as a fall back… it is a prompt for more information
• Dazzle them with sweet, salient points of information. Power
Points if you will…

3. Too Much Content
• If there are multiple paragraphs, with multiple point, with
multiple quotes, with multiple images, with…and with… and
with…
• YOU WILL LOOSE THEIR ATTENTION
• Keep it to a single or three points.

4. Animations
• Controlling what your audience sees, when and with what impact can be very well
timed using the animations controls in PowerPoint… – over animating makes it
busy, confusing and not easy to print out if you want to use the presentation in
handouts.
• Be consistent in the manner in which you animate – EXCEPT – when making a
point that requires real `impact, because they will get accustomed to the
presentation, so throwing in something very different will make the information
STICKY

5. Bullet everything

• By
• Point

6. Multi-Media
• Use the embedding function in PowerPoint (If it’s
offline)
• Or use Links to Videos, Gifs, Audio
• Utilise the Audience’s internal representation systems
– VAK
• Make them FEEL something

7. Recap, Repeat, Reword, Reuse
• Repeat
• Repeat
• Repeat
• Have the key points summarized in the ‘In this section we will cover’ slides
• Have the key points summarized in the ‘In this section we learnt’ slides

8. Showing Statistics
• When using tables – write the point in sentence form
so they know what to look for.
• When using graphs – write the point in sentence form
so they know what to look for.
• When using pictures… etc etc etc
• Best bet is to use INFOGRAPHICs to really stick in
their minds.
