नारदं पररपप्रच्छ वाल्मीकिमुुननपुङ्गवम ् ।।1.1.1।।
तपस्सवी ascetic, Valmiki, तप: स्सवाध्यायननरतम ् highly delighted
in the practice of religious austerities and study of vedas,
वाग्ववदां वरम ् eloquent among the knowledgeable,
मुननपुङ्गवम ् preeminent among sages, नारदम ् Narada,
पररपप्रच्छ enquired.
Ascetic Valmiki enquired of Narada, preeminent among the
sages ever engaged in the practice of religious austerities or
study of the Vedas and best among the eloquent.

िोन्वग्स्समन्साम्प्प्रतं लोिे गुणवान्िश्च वीयुवान ् ।
धमुज्ञश्च िृ तज्ञश्च सत्यवाक्यो दृढव्रत:।।1.1.2।।
अग्स्समन ् लोिे in this world, साम्प्प्रतम् now, गुणवान ् endowed
with excellent qualities, ि: नु who indeed, वीयुवांश्च with
prowess, धमुज्ञ: च knower of righteousness, िृ तज्ञ: च grateful
(who remembers even little help done by others), सत्यवाक्य:
truthful in his statements, दृढव्रत: firm in his vows (till such time
he achieves the results), ि: who?
"Who in this world lives today endowed with excellent qualities,
prowess, righteousness, gratitude, truthfulness and firmness in
his vows?

चाररत्रेण च िो युक्तस्ससवुभूतेषु िो हित: ।
ववद्वान्ि: िस्ससमर्ुश्च िश्चैिवप्रयदशुन: ।।1.1.3।।
ि: who?, चाररत्रेण with good conduct, युक्त: is endowed, ि:
who?, सवुभूतेषु for all living beings, हित: benefactor, ि: who?,
ववद्वान ् learned man (knower of everything which is to be known),
ि: who?, समर्ु: च competent (capable of doing things which
cannot be done by others), ि: who? एिवप्रयदशुन: च solely
delightful in appearance to everyone,
Who is that one gifted with good conduct, given to the wellbeing of
all living creatures, learned in the lore (knowledge of all things that
is known), capable of doing things which others can not do and
singularly handsome?

आत्मवान्िो ग्ितक्रोधो द्युनतमान्िोऽनसूयि: ।
िस्सय बिभ्यनत देवाश्च िातरोषस्सय संयुगे ।।1.1.4।।
आत्मवान ् self restrained, ि: who?, ग्ितक्रोध: one who has
conquered anger, द्युनतमान ् one who is endowed with splendour,
अनसूयि: one who is free from envy (envy depicting one's merits
as weak points), ि: who?, िातरोषस्सय excited to wrath, िस्सय to
whom, संयुगे in the battle, देवा: च celestial beings, devatas,
बिभ्यनत are afraid of.
Who (among men) is self restrained? Who has conquered anger?
Who is endowed with brilliance and free from envy? Who is that
when excited to wrath even the devatas, are afraid of (let alone
foes)?

मिषे त्वं समर्ोऽमस ज्ञातुमेवंववधं नरम ् ।।1.1.5।।
एतत् this, अिम ् I, श्रोतुम ् to listen, इच्छामम am desirous,
मे my, िौतूिलम ् curiosity, परं हि is great, मिषे O Maharshi,
त्वम् you, एवंववधम ् of such (virtues), नरम ् man, ज्ञातुम् to
know, समर्ु: अमस are competent.
O Maharshi, I intend to hear about such a man whom you
are able to place? Indeed great is my curiosity".

श्रूयताममनत चामन्त््य प्रहृष्टो वाक्यमब्रवीत ् ।।1.1.6।।
श्रुत्वा च एतत ्बत्रलोिज्ञ: वाल्मीिे : नारद: वच:
श्रूयताम् इनत च आमन्त््य प्रहृष्ट: वाक्यम् अब्रवीत ्
बत्रलोिज्ञ: knower of the three worlds, नारद: Narada, वाल्मीिे :
Valmiki's, एतत ् वच: these words, श्रुत्वा च having heard, श्रूयताम ् इनत
"Listen to me", चामन्त््य च having invited, प्रहृष्ट: was delighted,
वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत ् spoke.
Invited by Valmiki to take his seat Narada, knower of the three worlds
heard him and said with delight, "Listen to me!". And thus spoke

मुने वक्ष्याम्प्यिं िुद्ध्वा तैयुुक्तश्श्रूयतान्नर: ।।1.1.7।।
ििव: दुलुभा: च एव ये त्वया िीनतुता: गुणा:
मुने वक्ष्यामम अिम ्िुद्ध्वा तै: युक्त: श्रूयताम ्नर:
मुने O Sage Valmiki, ििव: many, दुलुभा: च एव rare indeed are the
ordinary people endowed with such qualities, ये गुणा: those qualities,
त्वया by you, िीनतुता: described, तै: with those qualities, युक्त:
endowed with, नर: man, श्रूयताम् listen, अिम् I, िुद्ध्वा having
ascertained, वक्ष्यामम shall tell you.
"O sage rare indeed are men endowed with the many qualities you have
described. I ascertained one. Listen carefully.

ननयतात्मा मिावीयो द्युनतमान्धृनतमान ् वशी ।।1.1.8।।
इक्ष्वािु वंशप्रभव: राम: नाम िनै: श्रुत:
ननयतात्मा मिावीयु: द्युनतमान्धृनतमान् वशी
इक्ष्वािु वंशप्रभव: born in the race of king Ikshvaku, राम: नाम known as Rama (one who
delights others), िनै: by people, श्रुत: is heard, ननयतात्मा steady natured (meaning
thereby immutable form), मिावीयु: incomprehensible prowess, द्युनतमान ् self
effulgent, धृनतमान ् self commanding, वशी subjecting the senses (subjecting the entire
world under his control).
People have heard his name as Rama, who was born in the race of king Ikshvaku,
having steady nature, possessing incomprehensible prowess, self effulgent, self
commanding and subjecting senses under his control.

िुद्धधमान्नीनतमान् वावमी श्रीमान् श्रीमान् शत्रुननििुण:
ववपुलांस: मिािािु: िम्प्िुग्रीव: मिािनु:
िुद्धधमान् great intellectual, नीनतमान् learned in ethical (statecraft)
philosophy, वावमी proficient in speeches, श्रीमान् possessing vast
auspiciousness, शत्रुननििुण: destroyer of foes (sins), ववपुलांस: broad
shouldered, मिािािु: strongarmed, िम्प्िुग्रीव: possessing conchshaped neck,
मिािनु: having prominent and strong cheeks.
He (Sri Rama) is a great intellectual, adherent to rules, eloquent, handsome,

मिोरस्सि: मिेष्वासः गूढित्रुः अररन्दमः
आिानुिािु: सुमशराः सुललाटः सुववक्रमः
मिोरस्सि: having a broad chest, मिेष्वासः armed with a great bow
(meaning thereby having a body strong enough to carry a bow), गूढित्रुः
has fleshy collar bones, अररन्दमः is destroyer of foes (sins), आिानुिािु:
knee-long arms, सुमशराः head with noble qualities, सुललाटः has a large
and beautiful forehead, सुववक्रमः valiant
Possessing a broad chest, armed with a great bow, with fleshy collar
bones, knee-long arms, a noble head, a graceful forehead and great
prowess, he is the destroyer of foes (sins)

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <6/20> तपस्सस्सवाध्यायननरतं तपस्सवी वाग्ववदां वरम ् । नारदं पररपप्रच्छ वाल्मीकिमुुननपुङ्गवम ् ।।1.1.1।। तपस्सवी ascetic, Valmiki, तप: स्सवाध्यायननरतम ् highly delighted in the practice of religious austerities and study of vedas, वाग्ववदां वरम ् eloquent among the knowledgeable, मुननपुङ्गवम ् preeminent among sages, नारदम ् Narada, पररपप्रच्छ enquired. Ascetic Valmiki enquired of Narada, preeminent among the sages ever engaged in the practice of religious austerities or study of the Vedas and best among the eloquent. वाल्मीकि: नारदम् पररपप्रच्छ Sloka-1

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <7/20> िोन्वग्स्समन्साम्प्प्रतं लोिे गुणवान्िश्च वीयुवान ् । धमुज्ञश्च िृ तज्ञश्च सत्यवाक्यो दृढव्रत:।।1.1.2।। अग्स्समन ् लोिे in this world, साम्प्प्रतम् now, गुणवान ् endowed with excellent qualities, ि: नु who indeed, वीयुवांश्च with prowess, धमुज्ञ: च knower of righteousness, िृ तज्ञ: च grateful (who remembers even little help done by others), सत्यवाक्य: truthful in his statements, दृढव्रत: firm in his vows (till such time he achieves the results), ि: who? "Who in this world lives today endowed with excellent qualities, prowess, righteousness, gratitude, truthfulness and firmness in his vows? ि: अग्स्सत Sloka-2

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <8/20> चाररत्रेण च िो युक्तस्ससवुभूतेषु िो हित: । ववद्वान्ि: िस्ससमर्ुश्च िश्चैिवप्रयदशुन: ।।1.1.3।। ि: who?, चाररत्रेण with good conduct, युक्त: is endowed, ि: who?, सवुभूतेषु for all living beings, हित: benefactor, ि: who?, ववद्वान ् learned man (knower of everything which is to be known), ि: who?, समर्ु: च competent (capable of doing things which cannot be done by others), ि: who? एिवप्रयदशुन: च solely delightful in appearance to everyone, Who is that one gifted with good conduct, given to the wellbeing of all living creatures, learned in the lore (knowledge of all things that is known), capable of doing things which others can not do and singularly handsome? ि: अग्स्सत Sloka-3

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <9/20> आत्मवान्िो ग्ितक्रोधो द्युनतमान्िोऽनसूयि: । िस्सय बिभ्यनत देवाश्च िातरोषस्सय संयुगे ।।1.1.4।। आत्मवान ् self restrained, ि: who?, ग्ितक्रोध: one who has conquered anger, द्युनतमान ् one who is endowed with splendour, अनसूयि: one who is free from envy (envy depicting one's merits as weak points), ि: who?, िातरोषस्सय excited to wrath, िस्सय to whom, संयुगे in the battle, देवा: च celestial beings, devatas, बिभ्यनत are afraid of. Who (among men) is self restrained? Who has conquered anger? Who is endowed with brilliance and free from envy? Who is that when excited to wrath even the devatas, are afraid of (let alone foes)? ि: अग्स्सत देवा: िस्सय बिभ्यनत Sloka-4

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <10/20> एतहदच्छाम्प्यिं श्रोतुं परं िौतूिलं हि मे । मिषे त्वं समर्ोऽमस ज्ञातुमेवंववधं नरम ् ।।1.1.5।। एतत् this, अिम ् I, श्रोतुम ् to listen, इच्छामम am desirous, मे my, िौतूिलम ् curiosity, परं हि is great, मिषे O Maharshi, त्वम् you, एवंववधम ् of such (virtues), नरम ् man, ज्ञातुम् to know, समर्ु: अमस are competent. Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <12/20> श्रुत्वा चैतत ्ग् त्रलोिज्ञो वाल्मीिे नाुरदो वच: । श्रूयताममनत चामन्त््य प्रहृष्टो वाक्यमब्रवीत ् ।।1.1.6।। श्रुत्वा च एतत ्बत्रलोिज्ञ: वाल्मीिे : नारद: वच: श्रूयताम् इनत च आमन्त््य प्रहृष्ट: वाक्यम् अब्रवीत ् बत्रलोिज्ञ: knower of the three worlds, नारद: Narada, वाल्मीिे : Valmiki's, एतत ् वच: these words, श्रुत्वा च having heard, श्रूयताम ् इनत "Listen to me", चामन्त््य च having invited, प्रहृष्ट: was delighted, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत ् spoke. Invited by Valmiki to take his seat Narada, knower of the three worlds heard him and said with delight, "Listen to me!". And thus spoke नारद: वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् Sloka-6

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <13/20> ििवो दुलुभाश्चैव ये त्वया िीनतुता गुणा: । मुने वक्ष्याम्प्यिं िुद्ध्वा तैयुुक्तश्श्रूयतान्नर: ।।1.1.7।। ििव: दुलुभा: च एव ये त्वया िीनतुता: गुणा: मुने वक्ष्यामम अिम ्िुद्ध्वा तै: युक्त: श्रूयताम ्नर: मुने O Sage Valmiki, ििव: many, दुलुभा: च एव rare indeed are the ordinary people endowed with such qualities, ये गुणा: those qualities, त्वया by you, िीनतुता: described, तै: with those qualities, युक्त: endowed with, नर: man, श्रूयताम् listen, अिम् I, िुद्ध्वा having ascertained, वक्ष्यामम shall tell you. "O sage rare indeed are men endowed with the many qualities you have described. I ascertained one. Listen carefully. Sloka-7 अिम् वक्ष्यामम भवान ् श्रूयताम्

Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <17/20> इक्ष्वािु वंशप्रभवो रामो नाम िनैश्श्रुत: । ननयतात्मा मिावीयो द्युनतमान्धृनतमान ् वशी ।।1.1.8।। इक्ष्वािु वंशप्रभव: राम: नाम िनै: श्रुत: ननयतात्मा मिावीयु: द्युनतमान्धृनतमान् वशी इक्ष्वािु वंशप्रभव: born in the race of king Ikshvaku, राम: नाम known as Rama (one who delights others), िनै: by people, श्रुत: is heard, ननयतात्मा steady natured (meaning thereby immutable form), मिावीयु: incomprehensible prowess, द्युनतमान ् self effulgent, धृनतमान ् self commanding, वशी subjecting the senses (subjecting the entire world under his control). People have heard his name as Rama, who was born in the race of king Ikshvaku, having steady nature, possessing incomprehensible prowess, self effulgent, self commanding and subjecting senses under his control. Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <18/20> िुद्धधमान्नीनतमान्वावमी श्रीमान् शत्रुननििुण: । ववपुलांसो मिािािु: िम्प्िुग्रीवो मिािनु: ।।1.1.9।। िुद्धधमान्नीनतमान् वावमी श्रीमान् श्रीमान् शत्रुननििुण: ववपुलांस: मिािािु: िम्प्िुग्रीव: मिािनु: िुद्धधमान् great intellectual, नीनतमान् learned in ethical (statecraft) philosophy, वावमी proficient in speeches, श्रीमान् possessing vast auspiciousness, शत्रुननििुण: destroyer of foes (sins), ववपुलांस: broad shouldered, मिािािु: strongarmed, िम्प्िुग्रीव: possessing conchshaped neck, मिािनु: having prominent and strong cheeks. Mr Nanda Mohan Shenoy CISA CAIIB <19/20> मिोरस्सिो मिेष्वासो गूढित्रुरररन्दमः । आिानुिािुस्ससुमशरास्ससुललाटस्ससुववक्रमः ।।1.1.10।। मिोरस्सि: मिेष्वासः गूढित्रुः अररन्दमः आिानुिािु: सुमशराः सुललाटः सुववक्रमः मिोरस्सि: having a broad chest, मिेष्वासः armed with a great bow (meaning thereby having a body strong enough to carry a bow), गूढित्रुः has fleshy collar bones, अररन्दमः is destroyer of foes (sins), आिानुिािु: knee-long arms, सुमशराः head with noble qualities, सुललाटः has a large and beautiful forehead, सुववक्रमः valiant Possessing a broad chest, armed with a great bow, with fleshy collar bones, knee-long arms, a noble head, a graceful forehead and great prowess, he is the destroyer of foes (sins) Sloka-10
