2. What Do I Have to Think About?
● Now that I have decided on my my genre of film for
my trailer, I am now looking into the target audience.
● There are many things that have to be considered
when thinking about the target audience:
● Who exactly you're trying to target: Genre, Gender,
Age. How you're going to do so: Thinking about what
things to include in the trailer that will help attract the
specified audience.
3. g Examples
Researchin
-To help with such in-depth research, I have looked at a few films from the sci-fi/horror
hybrid genre and their certification information.
Dawn of the Dead - Rated 18
28 Days Later - Rated 18
Alien - Rated 18
Predator - Rated 18
These are certified this age restriction because of violence/gore, sexual situations
and nudity, intense scenes and/or alcohol/smoking/drug use.
-As show above these films, all from the same genre, are in the higher age range of 18
and above. This would be a good starting point in which I can follow the example of.
However, I think I will try and aim for a broader audience of 15 and above, as it doesn't
limit who I am targeting as much. Statistically it is shown that teenagers spend the most
money in the cinema, and including 15 year olds in the age range will help with the
amount of money the film makes.
4. t Do the Experts Say?
Wha
Here are a few examples of what expert criques say about Sci-fi/horror films in regards to
target audience in reviews:
“Generally considered one of the finest Guy Movies ever, “Predator” is 100 minutes of
testosterone, machismo, and sheer firepower. With those kinds of foundation, it’s no wonder
there’s not much room for anything else.” - BeyondHollywood.com on the film Predator (1987)
“Alien has been described as a "haunted house in space" movie, indicating the way it straddles the
horror and science fiction genres. The Thing does the same thing, but with an additional twist: it
throws in a mystery worthy of Agatha Christie. That element, more than any other, makes this
movie unique and worth a viewing by any horror/sci-fi fan who has not seen it.” - ReelReviews.com
on the film ‘The Thing.’ (1982)
These reviews help me understand what is considered successful when included into a
horror film, and what specific groups will like certain things.
5. The Verdict...
I have decided officially that my film will be aimed at all
genders between the ages of 15-25. As this is the easiest
audience to target in regards to attracting. Also because
from what I have researched, this specified group of
people is what is most likely to be attracted to SciFi/Horror films.
