HOTEL
TRANSYLVANIA
How is cultural identity
featured in the story?
The main cultural identity that is portrayed in the story
has got to deal with the negative perspectives that
the immortals such as Dracula and the monsters
namely Frankenstein, Wayne, Griffin, Murray, and the
others have towards humans’ culture and behaviour.
These monsters who come and stay at Dracula’s hotel
are shown in the movie to have fear and hatred
towards humans. This can be seen through their
reaction within a scene where they look shocked after
looking at few photos of certain humans.
In addition to this, Dracula’s friends are also terribly
shocked after finding out that he actually allows his
daughter, Mavis to go out to a human village. In this
scene, Frankenstein’ wife, Eunice describes humans
negatively to Mavis.
Dracula really despises human because of his past
experience and this goes to an extent where he tries
his hard to manipulate his beloved daughter who
thinks positively about humans by believing that they
have changed.
In the scene where Mavis goes out to the human
village, she is shown to be really excited to discover
what it is like. The situation is supposed to be normal;
however, Dracula sets up a frightening scene of
humans to convince Mavis about the threat which is
enough to persuade her back to where she belongs.
On the contrary, Jonathan, a human who comes to
Hotel Transylvania is calm yet impressed at first when
he meets all the monsters at the hotel as he thinks
that all of them are putting on monsters’ costumes.
As soon as he finds out that the monsters are all real,
he becomes panic and fears that he will get killed. He
then frighteningly asks Dracula “Aren’t you going to
suck my blood?” which shows that humans also have
similar negative perspectives towards monsters.
Through this cultural identity portrayed by the
monsters and human, it is very much related to a
concept intercultural field called xenophobia which is
referred to fear and hatred that one has towards
strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange
or foreign to him or herself.
What challenges of
intercultural competencies
does this story deal with?
One of the challenges of intercultural competencies
that this story deals with is the misunderstanding
between monsters and humans towards each other’s
cultures.
For example, Jonathan asks Dracula in a scene “Are
these monsters going to kill me?”. This excerpt shows
how much Jonathan feels threatened while wondering
if he will still be alive after being surrounded with
many monsters around which he believes could cause
him harm.
On the other hand, during Mavis' birthday party, the
mood of it quickly changes from happening to chaotic
where all monsters immediately become shocked and
scared after knowing that Jonathan is actually a human
who is in a disguise of a cousin to Frankenstein.
Last but not least, this story also deals with the
difficulty among monsters to accept a culture that is
foreign to them. The main character, Dracula goes
against what Jonathan thinks to be fun. He dislikes the
entertainment that Jonathan likes.
In addition, Dracula also does not agree with his
daughter’s opinion that monsters and humans can be
friends. He says “No, that isn’t possible.”
Another example, Chef Quasimodo Wilson who is a
chef at the hotel does not tolerate Jonathan’s presence
there. He even captures Jonathan after finding out that
he is actually a human. Besides, he also intends to kill
Jonathan by roasting him over a fire.
THE ANT BULLY
Howisculturalidentity
featuredinthestory?
The primary cultural identity reflected in the story must
deal with the negative attitude of the human, Lucas,
toward ant culture and conduct.
Lucas Nickle is a 10-year-old boy who is bullied by
Steve and his friends. He attacks the nearby ant
colony out of frustration. He also mentioned that the
ant is small and he is big to show that he is more
powerful/stronger than the ant because Steve was
saying the same thing to Lucas when he was bullied
by Steve.
Because I'm big. You're small
What are you gonna do about that? Nothing because I'm big and you're small.
The other cultural identity that is represented in the
narrative must deal with the antagonistic viewpoint
that a small species like the ant and its colony have
toward human culture and action.
The ant and its colony addressed Lucas as 'The
Destroyer' because Lucas always attack the colony by
spraying water on the ant nest.
AHHHH the destroyer!!
Meanwhile, the female ant named Hova thinks
that humans are just like them because she
knows that human can talk but Zac does not
agree with Hova because he knows that
human is bad especially humans like Lucas
who always destroy their nest by saying that
'they are not like us!'.
They are nothing like us!
Besides being called the destroyer, the ant and its
colony also addressed Lucas as a Monster.
Awayy Monster
There is also a scene where a female ant calls Lucas
as 'two-leg' because Lucas also called himself as
'two-leg' to show that he cannot move faster like the
ants that have many legs.
Go two leg!
Other than that, the entire colony is afraid of
Lucas and they were very terrified when they
see Lucas in front of their eyes when Zac
shrank him and brought him into the ant nest.
Lucas is also known as Peanut and the ants
also call him as peanut.
It's Peanut. The Destroyer!!
This cultural identity, as portrayed by ants and
humans, is closely related to the intercultural idea of
xenophobia, which refers to a person's dread and
loathing of strangers, foreigners, or anything else that
is odd or foreign to them.
What challenges of
intercultural competencies
does this story deal with?
The misconception between ants and humans
regarding one another's cultures is one of the
intercultural competency difficulties that this story
addresses.
For example, there is a scene where one of the
ants touched Lucas for the first time and he is
saying that 'he is soft' which makes the entire
colony shocked because they thought that the
humans are just like them where their bones
are on the outside but it is the opposite.
*Shocked*
*Shocked*
During the meeting with the queen, The queen also
called humans as a bad thing that always destroy her
colony and the queen decided to punish the human.
A human that treathen our colony
Moreover, during the meeting with the queen,
Lucas does not know that the ants do have
family, feeling, etc. Lucas thought that they are
just stupid ants which make the entire colony
want to destroy him.
How am I supposed to know that ants do have feelings?
I thought they are just stupid ants.
Last but not least, there is a scene where the
insecticidal expert wants to destroy the colony, he
said that he will kill all the ants and there will be a
bug-free environment while laughing badly. This also
will make the ants have bad perceptions of humans.
THE
GREEN
BOOK
"In 1962, tough bouncer Frank "Tony Lip"
Vallelonga searches for work while his nightclub is
closed for renovations. The most promising offer
turns out to be the driver for African-American
classical pianist Don Shirley for a concert tour into
the Deep South states. Although hardly enthused
at working for a Black man, Tony accepts the job
and they begin their trek armed with "The Negro
Motorist Green Book," a guide for safe travel
through America's racial segregation. "
SYNOPSIS
credit: Kenneth Chisholm
"The snobbishly erudite pianist and the crudely
practical bouncer can barely get along with their
clashing attitudes to life and ideals. However, as
the disparate pair witness and endure America's
appalling injustices on the road, they find a
newfound respect for each other's talents and
start to face them together. In doing so, they
nurture an understanding and a friendship that
would change both their lives."

HOW IS CULTURAL
IDENTITY
FEATURED IN THE
STORY?
The movie is based on a true story which
contains conflicts from different cultural
groups, including black Americans of upper
class, black Americans of bottom class, white
Americans of upper class, and white
Americans of bottom class.
It shows how being the minority in a majority
nominated society could really shapes the
way you think and act. Tony Lip is a white man
who has prejudices and negative perceptions
towards the black community. Just like him,
the other whites dislike the very existence of
black people in their community. To them, the
whites are superior to the blacks.
Don Shirley is a black man who's in a higher
class in the society, however being the
minority means that your social class means
nothing for the majority and he also faces
discrimination among his own community.
scroll to the next pages
In these few scenes, we can see how the
majority (whites) describe what they think of
the minorities (black and asian). Tony as many
other white people in the story has the
perception that those who are not like them
are inferior, lower in status, disgusting, and
unworthy of basic human rights. Don however
felt like his identity is unclear, he felt out of
place, although he is black, but he is not like
his own community, nor the whites.
WHAT CHALLENGES OF
INTERCULTURAL
COMPETENCIES
DOES THIS STORY DEAL
WITH?
LACK OF MUTUAL
CULTURAL
UNDERSTANDING
DENIAL
Because of how racially segregated the
society was in that era, the black
community was seen as unworthy of
every basic human rights. The whites
denied them from joining or sharing the
same community that they were in.
Generally, the whites despised and
refused to accept another culture that is
foreign to their own.
1962 is a phase where racism and
discrimination is still at an all time high.
As black community is often associated
with slavery and lower in status. The
community is often being looked down
upon and ridiculed in terms of their skin
colour and culture. Many
misconceptions were being placed to
the culture which results to an overall
community slander.
This picture is one of the
clips that states how they
could not let Don Shirley to
eat in the same dining room
as it is the policy of the
restaurant. Back when the
law itself segregates the
non-whites from every
aspect, this scene portrays
the exact struggle of non-
whites.
Similar to the previous
picture, this is actually one
of the scenes where Don
Shirley was denied his basic
human rights to use a
decent toilet, the host who
invited him to perform, had
asked him to use an old,
worn down toilet that is
placed outside of the
property since he is not
white.
The misconception that
both Tony and Don have
on each other reflects
how society has shape
the way they see each
other's culture and
characteristics of each
community.
HOW ARE THESE STORIES SIMILAR
DESPITE THEIR DIFFERENT
CULTURAL SETTINGS?
"Being in the stance of the majority means that you
will have one way or another a misconception and
misunderstanding towards the minority's perspective
in life."
Each of these stories portrayed how
your mind could be wired in a certain
way based on the community that you
were in. Is it necessary to blame the
society for shaping how you think of
others? Perhaps. But do you not have
the control in molding your
perspective of others? Absolutely not.
Perspective is a choice.
Despite having differences
in cultural settings, one
thing that they have in
common is that they
managed to find a common
ground at the end of the
story.
Out with the difference in cultures, skin colour, social status,
prejudices, and perceptions & in with the acceptance,
understanding, and embracing each other regardless of one's
differences.

  • 29. Last but not least, this story also deals with the difficulty among monsters to accept a culture that is foreign to them. The main character, Dracula goes against what Jonathan thinks to be fun. He dislikes the entertainment that Jonathan likes.
  • 30.
  • 31. In addition, Dracula also does not agree with his daughter’s opinion that monsters and humans can be friends. He says “No, that isn’t possible.”
  • 32.
  • 33. Another example, Chef Quasimodo Wilson who is a chef at the hotel does not tolerate Jonathan’s presence there. He even captures Jonathan after finding out that he is actually a human. Besides, he also intends to kill Jonathan by roasting him over a fire.

  • 39. The primary cultural identity reflected in the story must deal with the negative attitude of the human, Lucas, toward ant culture and conduct.
  • 40. Lucas Nickle is a 10-year-old boy who is bullied by Steve and his friends. He attacks the nearby ant colony out of frustration. He also mentioned that the ant is small and he is big to show that he is more powerful/stronger than the ant because Steve was saying the same thing to Lucas when he was bullied by Steve.
  • 41.
  • 42. Because I'm big. You're small
  • 43. What are you gonna do about that? Nothing because I'm big and you're small.
  • 44. The other cultural identity that is represented in the narrative must deal with the antagonistic viewpoint that a small species like the ant and its colony have toward human culture and action.
  • 45. The ant and its colony addressed Lucas as 'The Destroyer' because Lucas always attack the colony by spraying water on the ant nest.
  • 47. Meanwhile, the female ant named Hova thinks that humans are just like them because she knows that human can talk but Zac does not agree with Hova because he knows that human is bad especially humans like Lucas who always destroy their nest by saying that 'they are not like us!'.
  • 48. They are nothing like us!
  • 49. Besides being called the destroyer, the ant and its colony also addressed Lucas as a Monster.
  • 51. There is also a scene where a female ant calls Lucas as 'two-leg' because Lucas also called himself as 'two-leg' to show that he cannot move faster like the ants that have many legs.
  • 53. Other than that, the entire colony is afraid of Lucas and they were very terrified when they see Lucas in front of their eyes when Zac shrank him and brought him into the ant nest. Lucas is also known as Peanut and the ants also call him as peanut.
  • 54. It's Peanut. The Destroyer!!
  • 55. This cultural identity, as portrayed by ants and humans, is closely related to the intercultural idea of xenophobia, which refers to a person's dread and loathing of strangers, foreigners, or anything else that is odd or foreign to them.
  • 56. What challenges of intercultural competencies does this story deal with?
  • 57. The misconception between ants and humans regarding one another's cultures is one of the intercultural competency difficulties that this story addresses.
  • 58. For example, there is a scene where one of the ants touched Lucas for the first time and he is saying that 'he is soft' which makes the entire colony shocked because they thought that the humans are just like them where their bones are on the outside but it is the opposite.
  • 61. During the meeting with the queen, The queen also called humans as a bad thing that always destroy her colony and the queen decided to punish the human.
  • 62. A human that treathen our colony
  • 63. Moreover, during the meeting with the queen, Lucas does not know that the ants do have family, feeling, etc. Lucas thought that they are just stupid ants which make the entire colony want to destroy him.
  • 64. How am I supposed to know that ants do have feelings?
  • 65. I thought they are just stupid ants.
  • 66. Last but not least, there is a scene where the insecticidal expert wants to destroy the colony, he said that he will kill all the ants and there will be a bug-free environment while laughing badly. This also will make the ants have bad perceptions of humans.

  • 69. "In 1962, tough bouncer Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga searches for work while his nightclub is closed for renovations. The most promising offer turns out to be the driver for African-American classical pianist Don Shirley for a concert tour into the Deep South states. Although hardly enthused at working for a Black man, Tony accepts the job and they begin their trek armed with "The Negro Motorist Green Book," a guide for safe travel through America's racial segregation. • 70. "The snobbishly erudite pianist and the crudely practical bouncer can barely get along with their clashing attitudes to life and ideals. However, as the disparate pair witness and endure America's appalling injustices on the road, they find a newfound respect for each other's talents and start to face them together. In doing so, they nurture an understanding and a friendship that would change both their lives." SYNOPSIS credit: Kenneth Chisholm
  • 72. The movie is based on a true story which contains conflicts from different cultural groups, including black Americans of upper class, black Americans of bottom class, white Americans of upper class, and white Americans of bottom class.
  • 73. It shows how being the minority in a majority nominated society could really shapes the way you think and act. Tony Lip is a white man who has prejudices and negative perceptions towards the black community. Just like him, the other whites dislike the very existence of black people in their community. To them, the whites are superior to the blacks.

  • 76. Don Shirley is a black man who's in a higher class in the society, however being the minority means that your social class means nothing for the majority and he also faces discrimination among his own community. scroll to the next pages

  • 78.
  • 79. In these few scenes, we can see how the majority (whites) describe what they think of the minorities (black and asian). Tony as many other white people in the story has the perception that those who are not like them are inferior, lower in status, disgusting, and unworthy of basic human rights. Don however felt like his identity is unclear, he felt out of place, although he is black, but he is not like his own community, nor the whites.
  • 81. LACK OF MUTUAL CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING DENIAL Because of how racially segregated the society was in that era, the black community was seen as unworthy of every basic human rights. The whites denied them from joining or sharing the same community that they were in. Generally, the whites despised and refused to accept another culture that is foreign to their own. 1962 is a phase where racism and discrimination is still at an all time high. As black community is often associated with slavery and lower in status. The community is often being looked down upon and ridiculed in terms of their skin colour and culture. Many misconceptions were being placed to the culture which results to an overall community slander.
  • 82. This picture is one of the clips that states how they could not let Don Shirley to eat in the same dining room as it is the policy of the restaurant. Back when the law itself segregates the non-whites from every aspect, this scene portrays the exact struggle of non- whites.
  • 83. Similar to the previous picture, this is actually one of the scenes where Don Shirley was denied his basic human rights to use a decent toilet, the host who invited him to perform, had asked him to use an old, worn down toilet that is placed outside of the property since he is not white.
  • 84. The misconception that both Tony and Don have on each other reflects how society has shape the way they see each other's culture and characteristics of each community.
  • 85.
  • 86. HOW ARE THESE STORIES SIMILAR DESPITE THEIR DIFFERENT CULTURAL SETTINGS?
  • 87. "Being in the stance of the majority means that you will have one way or another a misconception and misunderstanding towards the minority's perspective in life."
  • 88. Each of these stories portrayed how your mind could be wired in a certain way based on the community that you were in. Is it necessary to blame the society for shaping how you think of others? Perhaps. But do you not have the control in molding your perspective of others? Absolutely not. Perspective is a choice.
  • 89. Despite having differences in cultural settings, one thing that they have in common is that they managed to find a common ground at the end of the story.
  • 90. Out with the difference in cultures, skin colour, social status, prejudices, and perceptions & in with the acceptance, understanding, and embracing each other regardless of one's differences.
