under way for the 400,000-square-foot
distribution centre of FedEx Ground
which will be the largest FedEx Ground
small-package delivery facility and its first
automated facility in Canada. The hub
is projected to employ more than 300
people and will process 15,000 packages
an hour. The centre is expected to open
in Vaughan by August 2016.

2015 prepared by The Fraser Institute.
The report collects a variety of
relevant, objective indicators of school
performance to provide comparison
amongst the performance of individual
schools. The Fraser Institute, a nonprofit
organization, conducts this study through
a rigorous review process.

program has officially launched!
Student entrepreneurs receive start-
up money to kick-off a new summer
business and advice and mentorship
from local business leaders to help
get the business up and running. This
is a great opportunity for students to
explore self-employment, develop
their entrepreneurial skills and make
money at the same time. 15 students
with businesses ranging from odd-jobs,
swimming instructors, fine art, mobile
detailing, pet care, home and office decor,
pressure washing and deck staining,
tutoring, tennis lessons, paintball gear,
stationery to an escape room!

MAY 2015 – The new Artrepreneur
program kicked off May 6 at the
Richmond Hill Art School with an
interactive workshop facilitated by York
Small Business Enterprise Centre and
Vaughan Small Business Enterprise
Centre Consultants, Adam Kallio and
Raphael Costa, where Fellows were
guided through developing strong vision
and mission statements. Artrepreneur is a
program designed to equip independent
artists, arts businesses and collectives
in York Region with vital business skills
needed for success across all arts
disciplines and industries.

MAR 2015 – The idea of the sky being
the limit is behind the Global Impact
Competition, which took place at
the Markham Civic Centre as five of
Canada’s brightest minds pitched their
ideas to improve the lives of Canadians
in a Dragon’s Den-style showdown. The
winner attends a highly competitive
10-week graduate studies program
worth $30,000 at Singularity University
in California’s Silicon Valley, where
participants examine ways technology
can create a better world.
York Region Festival Alliance
Receives $322,000 Ontario Trillium
Foundation Grant

JUN 2015 – The newly launched
York Region Festival Alliance plans to
capitalize on strength in numbers. A
branch of the York Region Arts Council,
the alliance was officially unveiled at
the Region’s administrative Centre in
Newmarket. The alliance will foster
the growth of the festival sector in
York Region through the creation and
implementation of a robust multicultural
festival and experiential tourism strategy
that benefits all nine municipalities in the
region.

MAR 2015 – On March 25, 2015 the
3rd
annual York Region Tourism Summit
was held at Cardinal Golf Club.
It was attended by over 100 tourism
industry operators and stakeholders, who
received presentations and participated
in discussions about local, regional and
provincial resources for developing and
promoting attractive tourism products and
experiences.
York Region Farm Fresh Guide

MAR 2015 – York Region in partnership
with the York Region Agricultural Advisory
Liaison Group (YRAALG) produced its
most comprehensive Farm Fresh Guide
Map to date; featuring 29 Farms and 12
Farmers’ Markets. The York Federation of
Agriculture, as well as, the municipalities
of East Gwillimbury, Markham, King,
Whitchurch-Stouffville and Georgina also
contributed to the development of the
map, which is available in three formats
including the centerfold of the 2015/2016
YorkScene Discovery Guide, a fold-out
pocket card, and PDF.
