From ChefConf 2015. https://youtu.be/FI5sQQh8aKw When we first began using chef at Parse, we fell in love with it. Chef became our source of truth for everything. Bootstrapping, config files, package management, deploying software, service registration & discovery, db provisioning and backups and restores, cluster management, _everything_. But at some point we reached Peak Chef and realized our usage model was starting to cause more problems than it was solving for us. We still love the pants off of chef, but it is not the right tool for every job in every environment. I'll talk about the evolution of Parse's chef infrastructure, what we've opted to move out of chef, and some of the tradeoffs involved in using chef vs other tools.

Git is rapidly taking over the development workplace, and nowadays it is integrated with many development, testing and deployment platforms. But one of the downsides of high-level tools is that they can hide the details of what is happening under the hood. So when things go wrong or just get complicated it can be hard to understand why git behaves the way it does. But at its core Git consists of a few simple concepts that, when understood, make it a much more intuitive tool and enables powerful workflows. This talk introduces these core Git concepts and uses them to clarify some examples of seemingly counterintuitive behaviour. It also introduces some of Git's less-known features and tricks that are useful to have in your arsenal. This is an intermediate-to-advanced course for developers who are already using or investigating Git and want to gain a greater understanding of how it works.

How we're trying to develop a new chat service through WebSockets at letgo coming from a monolithic REST API. The challenge: Maintain the backwards compatibility. We don't want to force the mobile app users to update in order to use the new system. Furthermore, we have a lot of uncertainty on how the new system will perform, so in order to reduce it, we're taking advantage of an Event Sourcing approach in order to process in the new chat system in the staging environment the actual production load of the current system. If you want to learn more about the whole process we've followed and not just the synchronization part, come to the Software Craftsmanship Barcelona! This time we (@SergiGP and me, @JavierCane, will try to explain some more interesting things about how we're trying to develop this new chat system and, maybe you could bring some interesting discussion points :D). Most services can be orchestrated with the control loops supplied by Kubernetes (deployments, stateful sets or jobs). Some stateful services in Workday require more advanced orchestration, and re-architecting them is not an easy option. In this talk you will discover why some of our services require extra orchestration, and how we evolved an existing service into a control loop on top of Kubernetes. The control loop organises multiple services into groups these are dynamically created, deleted and scaled. It also orchestrates blue/green deployments of each group. Now we can adopt more kubernetes features and retire some of our old scheduling code. Finally you will learn the process we follow to evaluate and design our own control loops and when you might find them useful. Bio Iain is a principal software engineer at Workday using Kubernetes and Scala to deliver their next generation elastic grid. His twin passions are large scale distributed computing and applying clean code to complex problems. He is interested in good design and how this can improve system reliability and reduce friction during development. He loves sharing his experiences as he learns and builds new systems. He regularly speaks at local meetups in Dublin and has presented at conferences including GotoConf, Scala Days, Functional Kats and Lambda World.

3 years ago, Meetic chose to rebuild it's backend architecture using microservices and an event driven strategy. As we where moving along our old legacy application, testing features became gradually a pain, especially when those features rely on multiple changes across multiple components. Whatever the number of application you manage, unit testing is easy, as well as functional testing on a microservice. A good gherkin framework and a set of docker container can do the job. The real challenge is set in end-to-end testing even more when a feature can involve up to 60 different components. To solve that issue, Meetic is building a Kubernetes strategy around testing. To do such a thing we need to : - Be able to generate a docker container for each pull-request on any component of the stack - Be able to create a full testing environment in the simplest way - Be able to launch automated test on this newly created environment - Have a clean-up process to destroy testing environment after tests To separate the various testing environment, we chose to use Kubernetes Namespaces each containing a variant of the Meetic stack. But when it comes to Kubernetes, managing multiple namespaces can be hard. Yaml configuration files need to be shared in a way that each people / automated job can access to them and modify them without impacting others. This is typically why Meetic chose to develop it's own tool to manage namespace through a cli tool, or a REST API on which we can plug a friendly UI. In this talk we will tell you the story of our CI/CD evolution to satisfy the need to create a docker container for each new pull request. And we will show you how to make end-to-end testing easier using Blackbeard, the tool we developed to handle the need to manage namespaces inspired by Helm.

This talk will provide a brief overview of secrets management and then take a deep, technical dive into one tool in particular - Chef Vault. When a developer comes into an existing code base the urge to refactor can be overwhelming. However, legacy code bases – even those created and maintained with the best intentions – often resemble living organisms more than modular machines. Rather than simply taking out a module and replacing it with a better one, we have to surgically slice intricately connected sections of a code base apart and precisely tie each one off to prevent it from bleeding into another section. We also have to operate with the fear that a change in one part of a system may adversely affect other parts or even kill a critical piece of our application or infrastructure. This talk will teach you how to recognize the difference between necessary and cosmetic refactoring and how to assess and evaluate the risks of each. You will also walk away knowing how to develop safeguards and bypasses to minimize potential harm before, during, and after a refactor, as well as how to recognize the point of no return when rolling back a refactoring is riskier than keeping it in production. Maintaining a code base means you must constantly juggle the wish to improve it through refactoring and the potential side effects – you will walk away from this talk with clear techniques to help you find and maintain this balance.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
