Virtualization has transformed the way datacenters and their clients’ utilize servers.
Virtualization is a major step towards sever consolidation, something that datacenters benefit
greatly from. Although some commentators argue about the cost of virtualization, I believe the
benefits greatly out-weigh the investment. If you consider the cost a company bears for
maintaining an integrated datacenter that is wide spread, the one time investment for the
virtualization of the datacenter actually turns out to be more profitable. Add to all this the loss
incurred due to down time and virtualized datacenters emerge as a clear winner. Yet, there
might be some people who need further convincing which is why I am listing out several benefits
of datacenter virtualization that justify the expenses that go into the process.

Virtualization of servers allows you to not only reduce the expenses on high-tech computers but
also facilitates using of existing infrastructure to its maximum capacity.

Virtualization can ensure that applications remain available, independent of hardware servicing.
Virtualization greatly simplifies increasing the resources available to applications. At this stage
in the game, IT is seen no longer as a cost center but as an empowering agent that enables
business goals and increases agility.
Dual Usability
Through virtualization, servers can have both, storage area networking as well as local disk,
giving you the freedom to use the physical system for either purpose as and when work
demands.
OS And Application Encapsulation
Loading both an OS and an application on a single VM and hosting various VMs on a single
physical server is fast gaining popularity as this enables you to run multiple applications and OS
without any cross impacts and interferences.

Building a standard working system that supports various applications is a tough task as is
attaining compatibility to different workloads. Virtualization eases this process through the OS
and Application encapsulation that I discussed earlier. Standardization and compatibility also
go a long way facilitating distributed application delivery. You don’t have to go through the
hassle of tailoring your system to suit each and every workload.
Time, Cost And Facility Savings
Virtualization results in fewer severs being used. This in turn means you need lesser power and
cooling systems. You also require fewer server rooms and other facilities like fire and safety
equipment. Fewer servers also results savings on hardware as well as time saved on
maintenance.

3. Improved Disaster Recovery
A virtualized environment enables automated data backup and storage, as well as, backup of
mission critical applications, thus, making recovery of critical data easier in the event of a
disaster. VMs can now restore operating systems in a fraction of the time that it would take on a
physical server. Not to mention the fact that full recovery is rare in the case of purely physical
server where you need to manually trouble shoot and account for data lost.
Value Added Software
Another boon of the virtualization trend is that you now have several vendors offering multiple
software installation on a single license. ANTI-Virus software, for example, can now be bought
as a single license for one physical system and installed on all the VMs running within it.
Virtualization enables you to easily install software and applications on multiple VMs without
having to manage many physical servers.
