Nina Kotova: Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung Bach Cello Suites CD Recording Review. Warner Classics label Reviewed by Lars Ludwig von der Gönna English translation: WAZ: 2. August 2014, Kritik in Kürze: “Model am Cello” Short Review: “A model on the cello” "Have there always been so many so talented young cellists? Sol Gabetta and Daniel Müller-Schott, Johannes Moser, Alisa Weilerstein... Admirers („Geneigte“) will now remember Nina Kotova. She has been in the business longer and has an iron will to advance even more. That she once jobbed on the catwalk in order to afford a better cello is just one of many stories that surround the beautiful US-Russian (!). Her new album presents Bach’s Cello Suites - nothing less than the Old Testament of this genre. One is astonished: Here is someone who does not even try to pour something decidedly feminine into this strict mold. She plays with dark timber, without sacrificing the melodic sound. The full potential is not reached, but who would be capable of doing this anyway. Kotova’s Bach is profound, substantive, almost furious. Strong recording by a strong woman."
