C
hristmas is fast approaching and now is the time to get into the
festive spirit! I have had the pleasure of attending lots of Christmas
events lately and I must congratulate all the organisers for putting
on such wonderful occasions.
In Uttoxeter, Olympic Gold Medallist Adam Peaty switched on the
Christmas lights and I was very impressed by the terrific turnout of local
people to meet and greet our great sporting hero.
Cheadle’s Victorian Christmas saw a record number of folk turn out
– I have never seen so many people in the High Street! A big well done to
the new organisers Team Cheadle group, top notch!
Around our local villages festive events have been held and once again I am proud to say
what a fantastic community we live in – we still have that British spirit here...
Good luck to our little ones who are now preparing for the school nativities, plays and
concerts. I remember way back in the day when I took part in them. It was the most nerve-
racking time prior to going ‘on stage’ but seeing my family enjoying themselves and the smiles
on the teachers’ faces made it all so worthwhile.
Mind you, when I say back in the day I really mean that! I am writing this article on my
60th birthday so that’s how long ago it was...
I received fantastic presents and cards from family and friends this morning which made me
quite emotional I have to admit. 60 years old is something I just can’t get my head around as I
feel so full of beans. I love producing The Voice colour magazine for you and I enjoy helping
and supporting in any way I can Uttoxeter Town Football Club, Uttoxeter Rugby Club and
local cricket clubs and I hope I can still maintain my energy as I embark on a new decade.
Mind you, I felt as old as Albert Steptoe (younger readers Google Steptoe and Son!!) the
other day when I went into Ashbourne Road Chemists to collect my prescription – they told
me that hitting 60 meant I would not have to pay for them any more as I was entitled to free
prescriptions due to my age! Wow, that really was a shock!
As always at this time of year, I urge readers to think about others at Christmastime. The
weather forecasters have said we are due a particularly cold harsh Winter so please keep your
eyes open on your neighbours, especially the elderly in our community. Perhaps you could visit
them and take a bottle of whisky, box of chocolates or something special. I guarantee the smiling
faces of the recipients will make your Christmas.
Of course at this time of year we also remember the loved ones who are no longer here with
us....
Perhaps we could all stay silent at 12 noon on Christmas Day, close our eyes and whisper
‘Merry Christmas’ to those who have left us in 2016 and in previous years. The hurt will never,
ever go, but by acknowledging their memories during Christmas Day, it will make them a very
important part of the festivities.
To everyone, everywhere, I wish you all A Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. I
will speak to you again in the first Voice colour magazine of 2017, out early February

Staffordshire Nursery
D

reaches the south east
France.
Then recently, staff and
children Staffordshire nursery
Children 1st @ Acorns Upper
Tean, were thrilled to receive
correspondence from a
village in south east France
following on from an activity
organised by a member of
staff about to go on
maternity leave.
Following her maternity
party in early October, Early
Years Practitioner Michelle
Lomas had numerous helium
balloons left over. Rather
than let them go to waste,
Michelle brought them into
nursery and organised a fun
activity for the children, a
balloon launch!
With labels attached
giving potential finders
details of how to contact the
nursery, children and staff
headed out into the garden
and released the balloons
into the atmosphere. It was a
beautiful occasion with the
children watching in awe as
the wind carried them away.
Then, last week, staff and
children were delighted to
receive an email from
Foissant, a little village in the
south east of France, with the
good news that a balloon
released from the nursery had
made it all the way over the
English Channel, through
France to the village situated
north of Lyon. By car this is a
journey of 696 miles and
would take about ten and a
half hours!
The day after the release
the nursery received the news
that a balloon had reached
Evesham in Worcestershire
which was quite impressive.
However, to reach the
Rhone-Alpes region of
France and a small village of
around 1800 inhabitants is
brilliant. Everyone was so
excited to hear the news that
the balloon had travelled so
far.
Michelle Lomas
comments: “It is fantastic
that the people who found
the balloons have taken the
time to email us back to let
us know. The children are
really pleased and fascinated
that the balloons have
travelled so far.
Worcestershire was great, but
to reach south east France
has really sparked the interest
of the children. I wonder if
we will receive any more
responses!”

perfect day...
F
or our wedding Steve and I decided that
we would like to tie the knot abroad.
We chose Cyprus as our destination.
We booked the Sensatori Aphrodite Hills
Hotel to stay and the Sea Star Yacht owned
by The Exclusive Yacht Company for our
actual ceremony and reception. After
booking we had just 10 months to plan our
big day. I attended two wedding shows in
Manchester with my Mum and Mother in
Law to be which gave us some good ideas.
For my Hen Party family and friends joined
me for a pre theatre meal at Portofino’s
Italian restaurant followed by tickets to see
the musical Hairspray. A great night was
enjoyed by all. Unfortunately my Fiancé had
to cancel his Stag do as with just two weeks
left before we were due to fly out, Steve was
admitted to hospital with pneumonia. This
was an extremely anxious time for us, but
thankfully with the excellent medical care he
received he made a miraculous recovery and
was fit to travel.
From the moment we arrived we knew we
had picked the perfect place, the hotel and
setting was beautiful. During our first week
we had meetings with our Wedding Co-
ordinator and a visit to Paphos Town Hall for
the legal side of things. Each day was getting
more and more exciting as we greeted our
wedding guests when they arrived at the
hotel, totalling 31 of us all together.
On the morning of our wedding day we
awoke to glorious sunshine. After a leisurely
breakfast us ladies had booked to have our
hair and make up done at the hotel spa which
we were really happy with. All done it was
time to put on my wedding dress. I wore a
beautiful gown purchased from Bridal
Couture by Josephine in Cheadle and a
bracelet from Tiffany’s which was a surprise
wedding gift off Steve. The photographer
arrived and took pre-wedding shots of Dad,
Mum and myself outside my room which had
a large enclosed terrace, its own private pool
and fabulous views of the golf course. The
first mode of transport was the hotels golf
buggy. Dad and I sat in the back as it
whisked us up to the Anoi Tavern. Steve and
I had arranged to meet there, together with
our parents prior to our guests arriving for a
drinks and canapés reception. As I walked
towards Steve we both had tears in our eyes.
The men looked very handsome in their
wedding suits and Mum and Dianne looked
lovely in their wedding outfits.

Such a happy atmosphere as we mingled
with our guests before the open top
‘Exclusive Wedding Bus’ arrived at 4pm.
Everyone onboard to the sounds of ‘We’re all
going on a Summer Holiday’. So much fun,
everyone was singing and dancing and the
official party hadn’t even started yet! The bus
set off to Paphos Harbour whilst Dad, Mum
and I waited in the Tavern for the wedding
car to arrive, giving me time to reflect
thinking ‘wow, this is really happening’.
As we drew up at the quayside there was
a red carpet laid out leading up to the Sea
Star Yacht. Dad and I linked arms, walked
across the gangplank and up the steps to top
deck where all the guests were seated and
Steve was standing at the front with the
Minister. A Grecian version of Pachelbel’s
Cannon in D Major was played as Dad
proudly walked me down the aisle. After a
beautiful service and wedding vows, Mark,
Steve’s Dad, recited a lovely poem. Our guests
disembarked the yacht and formed two lines
either side of the red carpet. We walked
along as Mr and Mrs Bott to a flurry of
confetti and the song ‘Celebration’ by Kool
and the Gang. Our guests were all given
funky sunglasses which we had brought over
from the UK to wear for some of the group
wedding shots that we had taken by the
harbour. Everyone looked amazing. Back on
the yacht we cut our wedding cake and had
a champagne sailaway. We cruised for an
hour and dropped anchor in a bay just in
time for the stunning sunset followed by our
Mediterranean al fresco food on deck. A
poem was read out written by Dianne. It told
of how our romance began, places and
festivals we had been to, Steve’s proposal to
me in Lanzarote and last but not least each
guest’s name was mentioned to say thank you
for coming. Our first dance was to
Greenday’s ‘Time of your Life’ with stage
fireworks set off from the rear of the yacht.
On the run up to the wedding we had
posted out song request cards to our guests.
When returned, Steve compiled a playlist and
sent it to the yacht company for them to pass
on to the DJ we had booked. This was a
really good idea as everyone was up dancing
and having a great time all night. Towards
the end of the evening we had a spectacular
firework display to the sounds of Robbie
Williams ‘Let Me Entertain You’. This just
topped the day off nicely. It was finally time
to disembark and catch the wedding bus back
to our hotel. We didn’t want the night to end
but with the help of parents and everyone
who joined us it was a day we will remember
forever. Thank you for being a part of it, we
had the time of our lives!

Lank’s Lore
By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin
Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
W
ell here we are again with Christmas time
upon us. It certainly does come around
quickly it does not seem two minutes
since the last one.
In Uttoxeter the Christmas street lights were
erected and switched on at the end of November
which will give the townsfolk about 6 weeks of the
year with a festive atmosphere.
I have read in the local press that the annual
Victorian Evening has had to be cancelled due to
lack of support of the stallholders. In past years it
proved to be a very popular event with the public.
I know that the weather for the occasion was
atrocious last year but it’s the risk you take
organising anything in this country and am
surprised that if this is the reason in this case that
it is a great shame that they have decided to cancel
it.
Anyway we still have the annual Christmas
Cracker Night still going ahead which will
compensate and still put us in the Christmas Spirit.
Christmas time in Uttoxeter has changed
though over the years. I will miss the many
characters and Christmas occasions which I have
enjoyed in past years.
The Uttoxeter Guisers who used to tour around
the area visiting local hostelries and private homes
performing their mummers play was a local
tradition that was handed down through the
centuries. They disbanded 13 years ago after the
sudden death of one of their stalwarts family
members.
The members were all characters in their own
right and are greatly missed.
The letting in of the New Year celebrations with
the annual ritual of dancing around the Town’s
Christmas tree by literally 100’s of locals was
curtailed after vandalism of the tree set in and the
council stopped erecting the tree in the Market
Place and relocated it to above the Town Hall,
shame, it was a great occasion.
And last but not least the infamous, the late Mr
Vernon Cotterill with his Christmas tradition of
the Carving of the Boars Head in the White Hart
Hotel. Vernon’s skills were renowned in the area
which everyone who remembers him will recall.
To sign off for this year I will tell you a little
story about one of Vernon’s (who was a very dear
friend of mine) exploits that still tickles me to this
day.
Vernon Cotterill
Vernon was an excellent butcher and baker and
was especially renowned for his Pork Pies. On one
particular occasion Vernon had had an altercation
with one of his customers regarding an unpaid
account. The customer however did not relent in
settling his due debt but carried on regardless still
placing orders with him expecting his usual 1st
class service.
As Xmas approached he placed a further order
with Vernon for one of his Special Xmas Family
Size Renowned Pork Pies.
Vernon duly obliged even though he still had
not be paid for past supplies.
On Xmas Day Evening the mentioned customer
had gathered together his family and friends round
to his home for a Buffet, the pride of place would
be Vernon’s Renowned Pork Pie. He duly bragged
about how fortunate he was in acquiring such a
very sought after and limited commodity.
With all his friends and family gathered around
he commenced to cut into the pie to all his lip
smacking expectant guests only to find that Vernon
had replaced all the meat content of the pie with
Sawdust!!!!
Vengeance is total!!
Have a great Christmas and New Year everyone
and I will be back with you next year.

harity fundraisers Michelle Ticehurst and Ged (Jedi)
Davis decided to do a Skydive to help swell the coffers
of two worthy causes.
Ged managed to lose over 6 and a half stone to do this
jump and the pair decided to collect donations and give to 2
fantastic causes.
Ged collected for Slimming World’s cancer charity as most
people have all known someone who has been affected by this
dreadful disease. Michelle, a Cheadle hairdresser, is raising
money for Paddles Disability Swim School.
Michelle’s sister, Anna Lavan, set up Paddles School with
Paralympian gold medal winner Matt Walker to see children
take to the water and set their limbs free which is outstanding.
The intrepid duo have both raised a substantial amount
of money and they cannot thank the people of Cheadle and
district enough. ‘They always give so generously,’ said
Michelle. If anyone wants to know more about the swimming
school, please contact Anna Lavan on 07504941142 or email

Two organisations come together to bring a
magical Christmas to Cheadle
Cheadle and District Round Table, a
voluntary group of males who help to promote
and support local charities in the Stoke-on-Trent
area, have again partnered with Angus
MacKinnon to bring the magical Santa Sleigh
Tour to Cheadle this year.
Both parties met at the garage in Uttoxeter to
celebrate their previous partnership in 2015,
where Managing Director Stuart MacKinnon
(pictured 2nd left) generously offered to renew
the company’s support by donating a 4x4 vehicle
to help tow the sleigh around the town. To
commemorate this collaboration, the business
was presented with a photograph of last year’s
festive fundraiser, featuring the Cheadle Round
Table and their fantastic volunteer team.
Luke FitzGerald, Chairman of the Cheadle
and District Round Table says: “It’s fantastic that
charities are able to join forces with local
businesses like Angus MacKinnon, so we can
continue to deliver Christmas cheer to everyone
in Cheadle and the surrounding area. I’d like to
personally thank Angus MacKinnon for their
donation, and hope that this will be a partnership
and friendship that will continue for many years
to come.”
If you would like to help the Cheadle and
District Round Table with the Santa Sleigh Tour
2016 in any way, then please register your
interest with the team via

alented individuals at DE Healthcare, a
provider of care services for adults with
learning disabilities in Uttoxeter, recently
took to the stage to perform as part of a highly
anticipated competition.
The event, which was held at the family-run
care provider’s specialist Hub facility [based in the
town centre on Church Street], saw more than 20
clients take to the stage to perform an act of their
choice.
Clients of DE Healthcare regularly take part in
and are given the opportunity to organise fun and
exciting events, giving them the opportunity to put
their skills to the test and take part in the activities
they enjoy most. This helps individuals to build on all-important qualities such
as learning how to work as part of a team and managing time.
Its latest talent competition, DE’s Got Talent, featured a variety of acts
including drumming, rapping and even dancing.
The winner of the exciting event was Ashley Wilson, who despite having
no verbal communication, wowed the audience with an emotional rendition
of ‘Let it go’ from Disney’s Frozen. Second prize was awarded to Mikey Jones,
who performed a fantastic Roy Orbison drum set. Third place was presented
to Alan Hunter, who along with support from staff member Jennie James,
performed a dance routine to Jump the Line by Harry Belafonte.
The worthy winners were awarded with prize money and a special talent
trophy, while all the performers also received a goody bag for their efforts.
Tracey Fletcher, Managing Director at DE Healthcare, said: “The
competition was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the many talents of
some of our amazing clients and build their confidence. The Hub is designed
to be a place where people with learning difficulties can gain new experiences
and be inspired to learn new skills and interact with others in the community.
“It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm for the competition from our
clients and staff. Everyone who took part worked really hard to put on a
brilliant show and I know that all those who came to watch had a brilliant
time.”

My Monthly Musings
by Cecily Cowans of Cheadle
A
s I get older, I find myself using expressions
that my mother used… and sometimes I
even seem to express them in my mother’s
voice! One of these expressions is ‘The country has
gone mad!’ often referring to an item of news
featuring an unbelievably horrific crime or the
transfer cost of a Premier League footballer.
I found myself using her expression, but most
definitely in my own voice, when I realised that
Donald Trump was to be the 45th President of the
USA. Two days later, I went to do my weekly
shopping in that well known low cost store. Not
the one that begins and ends with the same letter.
The other one. As I was deciding which type of rice
to buy, I realised that the couple next to me were
standing still. As was the man in the middle of the
aisle. I glanced at my watch and it was 11.00 am.
The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the
eleventh month. Shoppers were observing a 2
minutes’ silence. One small child was hushed by
her mother. Then a bell rang and we all carried on
selecting our purchases. During those 120 seconds
I realised that the country wasn’t mad at all but
compassionate and eternally grateful to those who
died - in order to keep us all safe.
There are no veterans left from World War 1
and the youngest of those who were old enough to
join up or be conscripted at the start of the Second
World War are now in their 90s. In just a few years
none of those who fought for our country will be
marching in Remembrance Sunday parades and it
will be up to us to remember all those who died or
suffered - and in the very many conflicts since 1945
- by wearing a poppy and standing silently in a
supermarket.
Ginny’s Community Corner
by Ginny Gibson of Uttoxeter
T
he phrase ‘That’s just not cricket,’ is a short
statement that conveys so much. The
dictionary definition of the phrase states – if
behaviour is not cricket, it means it’s not honest or
moral. There is something very upstanding about
cricket and the 11 men/women who are going out
onto the field to defend their wicket with a willow
bat against a fast red ball.
The game originated in south east England and
became a national sport in the 18th Century. Lords
Cricket Ground, is seen as the home of Cricket,
was opened in 1814 with the first game played on
22nd June of that year.
Closer to home is Checkley Cricket Club, which
was founded in 1860 thanks to the interest, kind
patronage and the personal involvement of the
Philips family of the Heybridge Estate, Lower Tean.
The Club played on various grounds within the
Heybridge estate including a site near to the New
Broom (formerly New Inn) and Spion Kop situated
between Lower Tean and Leigh and because of one
of the relocations, the Club’s name was changed to
Lower Tean Cricket Club in 1902. After first
entering league cricket in 1905 by joining the
Blythe Bridge & District League its name reverted
to Checkley Cricket Club in 1909. Cricket resumed
after the First World War in 1919 when Lt. Col.
H.B.Philips made the present ground available and
provided a pavilion and mowers. The new pavilion
was built in the 80’s.
Checkley Cricket Club can be found at Four
Trees, Uttoxeter Road, Checkley, Staffordshire
ST10 4NA (Telephone 01538 724170) and when
I met with Gavin Carr, the current Chairman of the
Club, he explained that they are all passionate
about the game and their history and want to
continue to encourage young and old to play.
When I asked the age range of players, I was
amazed; you can start from 5yrs old and never
retire, if you don’t want too. So Cricket can be with
you for life.
The commitment of the coaching staff has
recently meant the 1st XI Team (men’s seniors)
have had a very successful season – they played
and entered 3 cup competitions and won 2 of them
and are now County Champions having a
victorious win over Walsall in September.
The cricket season is played from April through
to September each year and the 1st XI, 2nd XI and
3rd XI can be found around the county playing
most weeks in the North Staffs & South Cheshire
Premier Division and a Sunday XI which also plays
each week in the Stone & District League. At
present the club has 130 junior players and 41
senior players.
Winter training for seniors takes place at
Denstone College and for Juniors at various venues
such as Cheadle Academy, Checkley Community
Centre and Uttoxeter Leisure Centre, so in fact it
is an all year round sport. For more details on both
Junior and Senior sessions, please visit
www.checkleycc.co.uk or contact Gavin Carr on
07989 703742.
They also have a Facebook page so you can see
photos of all the teams - Checkley ACES
www.facebook.com/groups/103637257501/?fref=
nf
The Club has 11 qualified coaches to train the
130 juniors and training of the senior players is
looked after by Simon Guy, Director of Cricket at
Denstone College.
The history of the club means that great
grandfathers, grandfathers, fathers and sons have
all played at the club and in 2011 they introduced
girls and ladies cricket, so that it truly is a family
sport.
During the summer, training takes place for
Juniors between 6-8pm on Friday nights and for
Seniors its Tuesday 6-8pm. If like me you don’t
know much about the laws of cricket and want to
have a look at a great animation video, that
Stephen Fry has put one together for Lords Cricket
Club, which is fantastic. www.lords.org/mcc/laws-
of-cricket/laws-of-cricket-animations/
However, if you don’t feel able to play but still
want to be involved, then you have the opportunity
of becoming a coach, with a 3 weekend coaching
badge being offered by the club or you can also go
on the Umpire Course in February and so you get
to gesture FOUR or SIX or even OUT.
The 3rd XI team, which is very much the Club’s
Development side, have a policy of playing 4
Seniors and the rest are picked from the under 17
players, so you could be involved quite quickly in
playing senior cricket.
In total the club has 4 Senior Teams and 12
Junior Teams, including 2 Girls Teams, an U21
team, a Veteran Over 45’s Team and a Ladies
Team, which means that you have lots of chance
to be involved and play a game during the season.
Clearly with all these teams the club is looking for
more ground to practice and play on, so if you
have a field that you would like to donate, as Lt.
Col. H.B.Philips did back at the beginning of the
century, then please do get in touch with the club.
Of course there is a cost to playing and for a
nominal fee of £25 per year, you can join the Junior
side or if you are a senior then you will pay £65.
However there is also a Social membership of £25
because if you are involved with the Club the social
side is very active. The club has a fantastic function
room, where they put on lots of events throughout
the year to raise funds for the club. Recently they
have hosted a Beer Festival, Halloween Party,
Casino Night and there will be a Family Christmas
Chocolate Bingo night on 1st December, a Michael
Buble Tribute Night on 8th December and a
Christmas Party of 17th December.
The Club Bar Manager Carl Jackson is
passionate about our real ales and for the second
year running, our Club has been voted
Staffordshire Moorlands CAMRA Club of the
Year.
Club Chairman Gavin tells me they are
extremely grateful of the support they receive from
local businesses who recognise the hard work that
goes in to ensuring the Club continue to offer the
community the facility of cricket and a social
environment. They have 4 main sponsors at
present, Pro Drive, Andy Carr Electrical Services,
AH Brookes Solicitors and The Raddle Inn at
Hollington. If you want to be involved in that
aspect of the Club, then get in touch with one of
the 18 Committee members and they will give you
details.
So if you want to be involved with a sport that
has a strong team spirit, that is all year round, that
you can play from age 5 up to forever, has a strong
moral and honest theme running through it, then
Cricket is for you. You never know you could be
the next Freddie Flintoff, Ian Botham, Charlotte
Edwards or Jimmy Anderson.

Chocolate and Raspberry low fat
Christmas Log
F
or the past few months I have been trying
to lose weight before I had surgery. This
is always very difficult for me as I am so
passionate about cooking and baking. I joined
Slimming World and I have managed to lose
almost 3 stone! So this Christmas, I am going
to stick at it, as I feel fantastic and try not to
over indulge!! I will, of course, be making all
my usual treats for my family, but I will make
a few healthier alternatives.
The following Chocolate Log is still
delicious, but much lower in fat than my usual.
You will need:-
1 1/2 oz self raising flour
1/2 oz good quality cocoa powder
4 large free range eggs
2 oz caster sugar
For the filling
5 oz fat free natural fromage frais
11g sachet low fat Hot Chocolate drink, e.g
Options
Artificial sweetener to taste
4oz raspberries
To decorate -
Small amount of melted 70% dark chocolate
to drizzle
Icing sugar
Edible glitter
Preheat your oven to 180˚C. Whisk
together the eggs and sugar until light and
fluffy. Sift in your flour and cocoa powder and
fold in with metal spoon. Pour your mixture
into a lined 12” x 8” Swiss Roll tin and smooth
the surface. Bake for approx. 10-12 mins, until
cooked and springy to the touch.
Turn out onto a sheet of lightly sugared
baking parchment which has been placed on
top of a slightly damp, clean tea towel. I find
it easier at this stage to roll your cake using the
baking parchment and tea towel, and then
leave to cool. This seems to prevent your cake
from cracking.
When cool remove the lining paper and
trim the edges. If your cake does crack, dont
worry as you can hide it with icing sugar.
To make your filling, mix the fromage frais
with the chocolate powder, reserving a little to
sprinkle on top. Fold in the raspberries and
spread over the chocolate sponge. Roll your
sponge again.
Place on a serving plate and drizzle with a
small amount of melted dark chocolate.
Sprinkle with your reserved chocolate powder,
icing sugar and edible glitter and your cake is
ready to eat.
You can of course fill your cake with
whipped cream and raspberries which, of
course, is not quite so healthy but very
delicious!!

Should I colour my hair Grey?
M
ore and more people are hopping on the
grey hair dye train. What started as a
popular hair color on Pinterest has
grown to be one of the most sought after hair
trends on Instagram.
But while naturally going grey requires no work
besides waiting, going artificially grey calls for
quite a bit of work.
Before you settle on grey hair, you have a few
decisions to make. Namely, are you willing to put
your hair through the potential damage from
bleach lightening?
Preparation is vital!
6 Months before stop colouring your hair, grow
out your previous hair colour for as long as
possible to give the bleach a chance of removing it,
the result will be more even.
2 weeks before get a Moroccanoil hair mask
treatment, bleach will always dehydrate the hair,
so apply the mask often in the run up to bleaching
your hair, this will help minimize breakage and
dryness.
48 hours before don’t wash your hair, natural
hair oils will help to prevent any irritation when
the bleach/colour is processing.
Any time before, mentally prepare yourself for
having some length removed, any hair which is
very damaged will need to be cut off.
Unless you have a naturally light-blond hair
color, going grey means bleaching your hair to strip
out the color before the colour is applied. Even
when it’s done by a professional, bleaching your
hair means you’re going to have some breakage
and damage.
The first thing you’ll need to do is bleach your
hair. Grey colour on top of light blonde hair results
in the grey hair that’s popular right now.
If your going blonde from brown, it will
probably require two processes of bleach to get the
hair to the level of blonde color required for gray
hair.
At Spires we would include OLAPLEX with the
bleach to recover the hair as its lifted.
After two rounds of bleach, we would apply a
purple toner to the hair and let it sit for about 20
minutes before washing it out.
Why is the toner purple? Because it directly
counteracts the yellow unwanted undertones in
hair to give you the white-silver colour.
In order for grey dye to look true to its colour,
it should be applied to hair that has a white-silver
undertone, which is exactly what you’ll get when
you put purple toner on bleached hair with a
yellow undertone.
Once the hair is bleached and toned, the final
step is the grey dye itself. After about 30 minutes
of sitting on the hair, it’s washed out.
Total time: 7hrs +
Total Cost (before maintenance products):
£200. Prices vary depending on your hair and
stylist level of experience.

In Memory of Dear Joe
L
ocal people turned out in force to support a fundraising event in
memory of a Cheadle youngster who sadly died just days after he
collected his GCSE results. Joe Leyland, who attended Painsley Catholic
College, suddenly passed away from cardiac failure due to a genetic condition
known as mitochondrial myopathy.
Now a series of fundraising events are being held to raise the awareness
of the work CRY (Cardiac Risk In The Young) do.
Joe’s sister Charlotte Leyland organised a CRY Coffee Morning and Cake
Bake at Cheadle Cricket Club recently as part of the fundraising project and
here are photographs of the event which was well attended.

B
udding technicians and engineers at a
Uttoxeter high school are learning new skills
with state-of-the-art kit thanks to a £5,000
donation from JCB.
The company’s long association with Thomas
Alleyne’s School has helped many hundreds of
students discover the most modern technology
through fun sessions and innovative competitions.
The latest donation has helped buy two more
programmable robot systems which students use
to enter the robotics competition, ‘LEGO
Mindstorms’. Hopes are high this year after a team
from Alleyne’s reached the national finals of the
contest for the last three years with their robot
programmed to carry out a sequence of tasks. JCB
funds also help to pay for the school’s entry in the
Greenpower go-kart competition.
More than 300 GCSE and A level students
benefit from the funding, which pays for the
upkeep of specialist equipment like MIG and TIG
welding. It may also be used to buy a new brazing
hearth.
Head of Design and Technology Graeme
Quigley said financial pressures meant support
from JCB was vital if the school was to maintain
the range and quality of education in the subject.
He said: “We were so very pleased when JCB
confirmed they were continuing to support us for
the current academic year. We couldn’t do what we
do without them. JCB enables our students to
work with state-of-the-art kit, learning practical
solutions that are relevant to the world of work.
The robots help students learn advanced process
input and output by seeing real world applications.
JCB has supported the school for many, many
years. It helps our students be successful, and
through our rolling programme the older ones
studying for A level become ambassadors to
mentor the year 9 student.”

J
CB has
announced
news of one of
its biggest deals of
the year with an
order for 1,200 machines worth £35 million from
the UK’s largest plant hire firm.
The contract from A-Plant – which follows its
purchase last year of 1,500 JCB machines worth
£50 million – includes a fleet of 13-tonne JS130
tracked excavators made at JCB Heavy Products
in Uttoxeter.
The deal is also good news for JCB’s other
Staffordshire factories in Rocester and Cheadle
which will manufacture mini excavators, Loadall
telescopic handlers and rough terrain fork lift
trucks which have been ordered. A-Plant is also
buying a fleet of JCB site dumpers. All the
machines are being supplied by JCB dealer
Greenshields JCB.
For the first time A-Plant is also investing in a
range of UK-produced generators for the rental
market from JCB Power Products. The range –
produced by the former Broadcrown business
acquired by JCB last year – is fitted with the
revolutionary ‘JCB LiveLink for Power feature’.
Almost 40 sets have been purchased, providing
enough power to keep two hospitals or 1,000
homes running.
The latest order marks a major milestone for
A-Plant as it now means the company has bought
more than 11,000 machines from JCB since the
first one was purchased more than 25 years ago.
JCB UK & Ireland Sales Director Dan
Thompstone said: “JCB has
a long-standing relationship
with A-Plant and we are
delighted to cement that with
this huge order. Winning
business like this is testament
to JCB’s continued
introduction of innovative
products supported by
unrivalled parts and service
back-up from the JCB UK
dealer network.”
A-Plant Marketing
Director Asif Latief said:
“This order is part of our
investment programme to
ensure our customers
continue to get the most
advanced, reliable, safe and
environmentally friendly equipment. This year’s
investment also includes JCB generators developed
by the former Broadcrown business, which is a first
for A-Plant and recognises our commitment to
offering quality new products to our customers.
“Our investment programme is unrivalled in
the industry and coupled with the high levels of
customer support we provide, ensures we are
firmly positioned to be the obvious choice for
rental equipment whether our customers are local
builders, events suppliers or national contractors.”
A-Plant, which is part of FTSE-100 company
Ashtead Group plc, is the UK’s largest equipment
rental company with over 150 service centres in
Britain, more than 3,000 employees nationwide
and over 30,000 customers in the construction,
industrial, commercial, utility, public sector,
homeowner and events markets.
The JCB Loadalls are fitted with the JCB 55kw
Ecomax engine that complies with the latest
emissions legislation without the need for
additional after-treatment such as a Diesel
Particulate Filter (DPF) or Selective Catalytic
Reduction (SCR) otherwise known as AdBlu.
Offering significant fuel savings and simplicity of
operation in end user maintenance and servicing.
JCB is the market leader in the UK and Ireland
construction equipment markets and has eight
dealers with 48 depots providing unrivalled back-
up support to customers.
JCB lands big deal as A-Plant
orders 1,200 machines

Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions
Club and a former BBC Chief News Reporter.
‘Tis the season to be jolly amused
It’s the season of goodwill to all men. And the
season to be jolly. About time too. What a dreadful
year this has been.
Her Majesty the Queen famously spoke of her
annus terribilis in 1992 – the year of royal divorces
and the Windsor Castle fire. At that stage she’d
been on the throne a mere 40 years. If she dreamed
she’d live to be our longest-serving monarch, then
she would have realised she’d live to see 2016.
And 2016 has been an annus terribilissimus –
not just a terrible year, but the most terrible.
The European referendum and the election of
President Trump, whatever the rights and wrongs
of those democratic decisions, were hugely divisive,
pitting friends and family against each other.
And was there anybody amongst us who was
not touched in 2016 by the death of somebody
famous? The world of music lost massive talents
from David Bowie and Prince to Leonard Cohen.
We also saw the last of three of the greatest women
comedy writers this country has produced, Carla
Lane, Victoria Wood and Caroline Aherne, two
more great comedy actors, Ronnie Corbett and
Gene Wilder, the great radio broadcasters Terry
Wogan and Jimmy Young, and the Greatest
himself, Muhammad Ali.
And as if the Old Year were making sure no
tiny section of the populace – not even quiz nerds
and fans of 60s TV secret agents - was denied a
share of the collective grief, we even lost the last
of the Magnificent Seven, Robert Vaughn, the
original man from UNCLE.
Adam’s golden ray of sunshine
So, good riddance 2016. Was there any good to
come of it? Well, of course there was. An Olympic
gold medal was the richly-deserved culmination of
an incredible couple of years for Adam Peaty. The
role played by his nan, Mavis Williams, as social
media cheerleader-in-chief made it even more of a
feelgood factor and turned her into another locally-
produced international celebrity.
Adam’s homecoming parade through the town
was another peak. It was a privilege to hear his
inspirational impromptu speech on the town hall
steps. His television interviews and celebrity
appearances also show him to be a great
ambassador for the town.
There was a mammoth medal haul for Team
GB in Rio but Uttoxeter’s Adam was the first of
the Gold Rush, and it’s to his credit that his
powerful young shoulders carry that responsibility
so effortlessly and with such dignity. A true
sporting hero.
Guy Fawkes – the last man to enter
Parliament with honest intentions
At a more everyday – or more accurately every
year - level, we had one of the most successful
bonfires I can remember last month. It was
superbly attended, raised thousands of pounds for
local causes, and it was wonderful to have so many
local schoolchildren involved building guys for the
top of the fire, many for the first time.
Some of their teachers said they too had never
built a Guy Fawkes, and it struck me that the ‘last
man to enter Parliament with honest intentions’ is
being forgotten by history, much as the penny-for-
the-guy collections of my youth have been
supplanted by the American import trick-or-treat.
True it’s easier to buy a cheap Halloween
costume and traipse from house to house, than it
is to create a human effigy from old clothes and
newspapers, but however you dress up All
Hallows’ Eve – and there’s an awful lot of dressing
up involved – its popularity is more of a reflection
of commercial pressure than any interest in its
pagan origins.
A feast of festive viewing
So what is there to smile about this Christmas?
For a start, we can be grateful we live in the age of
recording technology. But not because of the
Christmas fare served up by our broadcasters.
I’m thinking again about all those celebrity
deaths. If we’d been born a century earlier, before
Mr Edison’s phonograph and the many
improvements on Mr Logie Baird’s televisual
device, the performers and sportsmen we lost this
year would be remembered only through fading
press cuttings.
But thanks to those inventions and their digital
offspring, we can enjoy the work of the great stars
every day. Given the number of big names who
passed on this year, that’s enough entertainment for
the whole festive season.
I think I’ll start with the first Ali-Liston fight.
Six rounds of brutality. Then grace, poetry, a
shuffle, and mayhem in the ring. That should go
down well with the Christmas pud. And the
dancing is better than Strictly.
Merry Christmas, everyone.

Let The Voice Be With You
by Les Humphries of Rocester
H
ello readers, well not many more days to
Christmas, it seems to come around more
quickly every year doesn’t it?
Remembrance weekend brought the best out of
the great British public, who ignored the pacifists
and anti Monarchists and generously gave to the
Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal - not to
celebrate war, but in respectful memory of all those
brave men and women who gave their lives for
their Country, and I would like to personally thank
all those people at JCB HQ where I sell my
poppies, for their contributions.
This year the JCB Academy held their own
poppy launch attended by local dignitaries, Lord
Bamford himself making the opening speech and
adding the final poppy to the marvellous display
which the students had put together. I had the
honour of dipping the Denstone Standard to the
Last Post played by student Joe Hey.
Another student of the Academy, 17 year old
Isobel Fitzgerald, did the honours for us at both
Denstone and Rocester on the official
Remembrance Sunday on the 13th of November.
It is wonderful that these young people are
prepared to give up their time to attend these
occasions in this day and age. Many thanks to
Stuart McCrone for providing the trumpeters, who
are both members of his music school.
Sixteen year old L/Cpl Jack Waddington of
Rocester now represents the Uttoxeter Army Cadet
Force as Standard Bearer. The Cadets also give up
their time selling poppies and attending parades at
Remembrance events, such as the popular
Remembrance Concert in St. Mary’s Church
Uttoxeter. Whilst at the other end of the age
spectrum The Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir
attended their usual Concert at Lask Edge on the
afternoon of Remembrance Sunday in their little
chapel.
As always loads of activities taking place at St.
Michaels Church in Rocester during December.
This Issue of The Voice will probably hit the streets
too late for the Victorian Market which takes place
on the 3rd and 4th of December so if you didn’t go
you’ve missed it!
However, plenty more Christmas enjoyment for
you, starting with the Christingle Service at 1015
am on Sunday the 11th (normal Sunday Service
time). One week later is the Carol Service on
Sunday the 18th at 4pm, always well attended.
This year on Christmas Eve at 4pm there is to be a
donkey Nativity Procession through the Village
which will culminate at the stable where the
Heavenly Host, Three Kings, and many others will
be in attendance, great for the kids and mums and
dads alike. Later that evening at 1130pm is the
Holy Communion Service, or Midnight Eucharist
as it is sometimes called, another popular Service
which takes us into Christmas Day, when of course
later on Christmas Morning at 10am another Holy
Communion Service is available.
As I have included the Christmas arrangements
for St. Michaels Church I would also like to bring
Rocester folks attention to a fund raising project
for the Church, which is the brainchild of former
Rocester lad Bill Woodier. After spending his
younger years in the Village, Bill went on his travels
and now as a pensioner living in Cheadle and after
talking to my daughter Helen via Facebook he got
in touch with me.
Some years ago, when Rocester used to have a
yearly Carnival, the late George Large and myself
used to film them on Super 8 Cine, which of course
was silent. Ian Woodhead then took it a stage
further by transferring them (with our permission)
to Video, a medium which was not available when
we made the original films. He then added footage
of his own shot on Video, and released them on the
Happy Days label adding music to our silent
footage.
Bill has taken it a stage further by transferring
the films to DVD, adding appropriate music to fit
the action, and put in some wonderful titles to
produce a very professional result of chronicling
Rocester of yesteryear which I am sure many of
you will already have caught glimpses of on
Facebook. Many of the people on film sadly are no
longer with us, and many of the children are now
grown up with families of their own.
I really enjoyed watching them again,
sometimes with a lump in my throat, and I am sure
a lot of you will get a real kick out of trying to
recognise yourselves or your families 30 years ago.
No sex, plenty of violence in the pram races, and
lots of nostalgic fun.
The DVDs are priced at £5 and all proceeds go
to St. Michael's Church. Both Ian Woodhead and
myself have given our blessing and I’m sure George
would have done the same. This is his legacy to
Rocester, and the village and St Michael’s are lucky
to have such a friend of the village.
So TTFN everyone have a great Christmas, see
you in the New Year. Les

ecember already and dark nights and
inclement weather give me more time and
inclination to stay indoors and catch up with
record keeping and paperwork, but I’m easily
distracted.
As we’re going into winter, there will only be
Pheasants to see frequently, pecking over spilt grain
when we have fed the sheep and sparrows clearing up
in the yards by the cattle troughs. Most other birds
and small animals will be hibernating or keeping
warm and dry in snug nests, in sheds and thick hedges
and holes in the ground, coming out only to look for
food as necessary.
Our repair work on fences and hedges begins as
the cattle have come in and we will be checking up
on the sheep still out in the fields. Feed will be taken
out if the weather becomes particularly bad and we
have to make sure that there is access to water too,
breaking ice in troughs if necessary.
I keep reading about how‘intensified’ our farming
in this country is and find it very hard to reconcile
what I read with what I know and see!
I see our own farm (not that much different from
any other) and I see grass fields surrounded by
hedgerows- some broad and high, some newly laid
and patches re-planted.
I walk along these hedges and hear them full of
chirruping and buzzing during the warmer months
and look up into the tall trees- the Ash, Birch, Beech
and Oak and notice squirrels, wasps and Bees.
I take short cuts through our arable fields and
cross the wide grass margins that run all around- but
not just grass-there is greater burnet, birds foot trefoil,
vetch, meadow sweet, campion, clover.
This farm has been in environmental schemes for
the last fifteen years, as have a good proportion of all
agricultural land and, yet, for many years before that
we grew more corn on more acres with more inputs
and there was less of our land down to pasture, with
higher numbers of livestock on that pasture.
We used more chemical with less regulation too,
but the driver was to produce food and the plentiful
supply has meant we are all living longer too.
Just what is meant by ‘intensive’?
At different times of the year we work intensively-
lambing and harvesting spring to mind, does that
make us ‘intensive’?
So, in the last twenty years, farming in general has
done the very opposite of ‘intensify’, with the
numbers of livestock and acres of cropping declining.
The collective thought behind this ‘intensive’ label is
so out of touch and out dated.
There must be other forces having an effect on the
demise of some of our wildlife- urban
development/infrastructure (lots of new houses and
roads) and weather maybe (but don’t forget that some
species are increasing in numbers, It’s not all doom
and gloom).

Uttoxeter Choral
Society’s performance of
Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir
A cold and frosty afternoon was transformed in the
evening by an electrifying performance of Uttoxeter Choral
Society. An arresting performance of Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir
was accompanied by the playing of two beautiful violinists as
well as Katie Riddle on the piano. The dynamic range of the
choir was illustrated in this first concert by conductor Jakob
Grubbström.
A varied selection of choral items was succeeded by a
virtuoso performance by Sarah Farmer on the violin of Gerald
Finzi’s Introit ably accompanied by Katie Riddle on piano.
During the interval the presence of the mayor, Alan Noyes
was utilised as he presented a long service award to Philip
Knight who has sung tenor with the choir since his arrival in
Uttoxeter in 1966.
Bach’s motet was ably accompanied by the two violins so
that when they played in unison only an increase in volume
was heard. Patricia Stepien and Sarah were perfectly
matched. The harmonies were beautiful.
This was emphasised in the accompaniament of the Faure
requiem. Here Sarah played viola and she and Patricia gave
a poignant note to an inspirational piece. Rheinberger’s lovely
Abendlied was the prelude to a magnificent ending to the
concert with Haydn’s Te Deum. The powerful male singers
gave a magnificence to the performance balanced by the soft
and gentle flow of the allegro. The distinctive surprises of
Haydn’s composition were effectively contrived and the piece
ended on a triumphant note.
Jakob is to be congratulated, not only for presenting such
an interesting concert, but also for his development of the
choir into a professional and effective ensemble. The audience
praised the violinists on a beautiful performance and the men
on their effectiveness.
Soloists:- Katie Riddle, piano, Sarah Farmer, viola, Patricia
Stepien violin and Jakob Grubbström, conductor.

All-time local soccer
Hall of Fame Team
By Roy ‘Razzer’Astbury
Each month Uttoxeter’s best known character Roy
‘Razzer’Astbury will compile his very own ‘All-
Time Local Football Team’which in his opinion
is the very best of players past and present.
‘Razzer’will create a team in each issue
of The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice which
he believes incorporates all the
ingredients of a football outfit which
could be unbeatable!
He will be delving into his
thoughts to remember all the
terrific players in years gone
by whilst selecting those
who are exceptional in our
present day.
It should be a
fantastic talking
point in our
community and
no doubt you all
will have your
views on
‘Razzer’s
Hall of
Fame
team.
Sport is in my blood...
by Jeff Wood of Cheadle, dedicated to local sport for a lifetime...
I
must begin this column by thanking those readers
who sent their good wishes to me during my recent
spell in hospital, which caused me to miss writing
an article in the last edition of The Voice and also meant
that I missed watching a few games of football. I can
now report that I am much better and back to fitness
(or at least back to the wrong side of the touchline).
Sadly I have to mention the passing of a couple of
well known personalities since my last column.
Many sportsmen will have known Neil Hemmings
as he served as Chairman of Moddershall Cricket Club
during their North Staffs and South Cheshire Premier
League table championship season a few years ago. His
son Simon was a regular player in the team during that
season.
Neil was also well known as a player and official at
Leek Hockey Club and was a prominent member of
Stone Wheelers cycling club for many years. Along with
myself, many of Neil’s former working colleagues were
present and I had the opportunity to renew my
acquaintance with them.
Two former players of Stoke Rugby Club were
there, namely Dick Ellis and Neil McPherson. Dick was
also a former player with Birkenhead Park RUFC, and
he used to recount the occasion when he was a member
of the winning side when Bill Beaumont was in the
opposition team Fylde, whilst Neil formerly played
rugby for both Walsall and Stoke, as well as captaining
Staffordshire. A true all round sportsman who could
have succeeded at any sport he chose, Neil for many
years also represented Staffordshire at tennis and still
plays for the veterans.
Also present was Kevin Lewis, whom I’ve not seen
for a number of years. As the footballing fraternity will
know, as a youngster Kevin was with Manchester
United prior to going to Crewe. He also managed
Telford United after a spell in management at Leek
Town, where I first got to know him. But perhaps he
was best known as landlord of the Dyers Arms at Leek,
a very well used hostelry frequented by many of Leek’s
Sunday League teams after their matches, as my fellow
columnist Bake will undoubtedly confirm.
The other sad passing was that of George Lewicki,
who I well remember as a goalscoring forward with
Milton Rangers at their height. I have recounted the
incident previously in this column when, on one
occasion we played against them, our principal tactic,
devised by Bill Spooner and myself, in order to attempt
to minimise their inevitable superiority was to get the
ball into the adjacent canal as often as possible. A crude
tactic admittedly, but it was to some measure successful.
By the time all three match balls were in the canal at
the same time, George was going berserk as he could
see the chance of more goals passing him by as the
minutes ticked away. It was sad to learn of George’s
death as he was a few years younger than myself.
On a brighter note, I have been watching Cheadle
Town’s first team in the Staffs County Senior League
Premier Division recently, not least because my lads
Olly and Tim are playing there. Cheadle are an
extremely well run club with top management and a
first class backroom staff, without which no club can
survive. Terry Fowell, an old adversary of mine, does a
sterling job performing those essential tasks such as
putting the nets up and taking them down and
generally seeing that everything is prepared for the
games, home and away. At away games, Terry
sometimes lets me carry the water bottles or first aid
kit into the ground so that I don’t have to pay an
admission charge (even the reduced charge for senior
citizens).
I’ve mentioned previously Mark Alcock the
manager in this column. I was in conversation recently
with Dennis Vickers, who I am led to believe is the
League liaison officer, and Rob Drummond of Leek
CSOB. I know Rob as I used to play cricket with him.
Rob believed he was the oldest player in the League but,
as I told him, he is far from it as that honour surely
belongs to Mark Alcock, many years his senior, who
turned out recently for Town and produced a great
performance in midfield . I won’t just say how old
Mark is, but as I told him, I was fifty when Olly was
born and Mark has played competitive football with
both of us, which is truly remarkable.
There are of course others connected with Cheadle
Town whom I shall doubtless mention in future articles,
but the club is indeed fortunate to have as its director
of football Alan Beaman, my fellow columnist. Alan of
course has a wealth of experience in the game, having
played and managed for many years at higher levels.
Suffice to say his presence is worth at least a goal to the
side, such is his astuteness and management skill. I have
played with and against Alan during my career but it is
only in the last few months that I have had any
extended conversation with him regarding the game. I
must say I also enjoy reading his column in The Voice.
Just one negative note about Cheadle Town is that,
whilst the off field facilities are good apart possibly
from the absence of covered accommodation, they
haven’t got a better pitch to play on. A town such as
Cheadle deserves a ground which befits the club which
plays on it and Thorley Drive just isn’t up to the
standard of the team. Unlike almost all other clubs in
the league, Town can’t even charge for admission.
Maybe things will improve and hopefully during my
lifetime. Only time will tell.
Christmas is fast approaching and, on New Years
Eve, I shall celebrate being a year older. I am hoping to
go away for my birthday where no one will find me.
The only problem is that it falls on a Saturday and there
may of course be a fixture on that day, in which case I
shall be forced to change my arrangements.
Whatever the outcome, I wish all readers a Happy
Christmas and Prosperous New Year.
TERRY GADSBY

Hanbury team back in the

All Rights Reserved. Copyright Community Voice Publications Ltd. Designed and Produced by noel@sergeantdesign.com C hristmas is fast approaching and now is the time to get into the festive spirit! I have had the pleasure of attending lots of Christmas events lately and I must congratulate all the organisers for putting on such wonderful occasions. In Uttoxeter, Olympic Gold Medallist Adam Peaty switched on the Christmas lights and I was very impressed by the terrific turnout of local people to meet and greet our great sporting hero. Cheadle’s Victorian Christmas saw a record number of folk turn out – I have never seen so many people in the High Street! A big well done to the new organisers Team Cheadle group, top notch! Around our local villages festive events have been held and once again I am proud to say what a fantastic community we live in – we still have that British spirit here... Good luck to our little ones who are now preparing for the school nativities, plays and concerts. I remember way back in the day when I took part in them. It was the most nerve- racking time prior to going ‘on stage’ but seeing my family enjoying themselves and the smiles on the teachers’ faces made it all so worthwhile. Mind you, when I say back in the day I really mean that! I am writing this article on my 60th birthday so that’s how long ago it was... I received fantastic presents and cards from family and friends this morning which made me quite emotional I have to admit. 60 years old is something I just can’t get my head around as I feel so full of beans. I love producing The Voice colour magazine for you and I enjoy helping and supporting in any way I can Uttoxeter Town Football Club, Uttoxeter Rugby Club and local cricket clubs and I hope I can still maintain my energy as I embark on a new decade. Mind you, I felt as old as Albert Steptoe (younger readers Google Steptoe and Son!!) the other day when I went into Ashbourne Road Chemists to collect my prescription – they told me that hitting 60 meant I would not have to pay for them any more as I was entitled to free prescriptions due to my age! Wow, that really was a shock! As always at this time of year, I urge readers to think about others at Christmastime. The weather forecasters have said we are due a particularly cold harsh Winter so please keep your eyes open on your neighbours, especially the elderly in our community. Perhaps you could visit them and take a bottle of whisky, box of chocolates or something special. I guarantee the smiling faces of the recipients will make your Christmas. Of course at this time of year we also remember the loved ones who are no longer here with us.... Perhaps we could all stay silent at 12 noon on Christmas Day, close our eyes and whisper ‘Merry Christmas’ to those who have left us in 2016 and in previous years. The hurt will never, ever go, but by acknowledging their memories during Christmas Day, it will make them a very important part of the festivities. To everyone, everywhere, I wish you all A Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. I will speak to you again in the first Voice colour magazine of 2017, out early February Nigel Titterton, Editor and Publisher The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice is wholly independent and is published at 3 Spode Close, Cheadle, Staffs ST10 1DT 15,000 copies are distributed free to homes and businesses in Uttoxeter, Cheadle, Ashbourne, Rocester, Denstone, Bramshall, Stramshall, Alton, Oakamoor, Tean, Lower Tean, Checkley, Leigh, Church Leigh, Crakemarsh, Combridge, Kingsley, Mayfield, Draycott, Cresswell, Saverley Green & Fulford and Doveridge areas. Then recently, staff and children Staffordshire nursery Children 1st @ Acorns Upper Tean, were thrilled to receive correspondence from a village in south east France following on from an activity organised by a member of staff about to go on maternity leave. Following her maternity party in early October, Early Years Practitioner Michelle Lomas had numerous helium balloons left over. Rather than let them go to waste, Michelle brought them into nursery and organised a fun activity for the children, a balloon launch! With labels attached giving potential finders details of how to contact the nursery, children and staff headed out into the garden and released the balloons into the atmosphere. It was a beautiful occasion with the children watching in awe as the wind carried them away. Then, last week, staff and children were delighted to receive an email from Foissant, a little village in the south east of France, with the good news that a balloon released from the nursery had made it all the way over the English Channel, through France to the village situated north of Lyon. By car this is a journey of 696 miles and would take about ten and a half hours! The day after the release the nursery received the news that a balloon had reached Evesham in Worcestershire which was quite impressive. However, to reach the Rhone-Alpes region of France and a small village of around 1800 inhabitants is brilliant. Everyone was so excited to hear the news that the balloon had travelled so far. Michelle Lomas comments: “It is fantastic that the people who found the balloons have taken the time to email us back to let us know. The children are really pleased and fascinated that the balloons have travelled so far. Worcestershire was great, but to reach south east France has really sparked the interest of the children. I wonder if we will receive any more responses!” Children 1st @ Acorns Upper Tean is part of family run nursery group Children 1st Day Nurseries. • 14. perfect day... F or our wedding Steve and I decided that we would like to tie the knot abroad. We chose Cyprus as our destination. We booked the Sensatori Aphrodite Hills Hotel to stay and the Sea Star Yacht owned by The Exclusive Yacht Company for our actual ceremony and reception. After booking we had just 10 months to plan our big day. I attended two wedding shows in Manchester with my Mum and Mother in Law to be which gave us some good ideas. For my Hen Party family and friends joined me for a pre theatre meal at Portofino’s Italian restaurant followed by tickets to see the musical Hairspray. A great night was enjoyed by all. Unfortunately my Fiancé had to cancel his Stag do as with just two weeks left before we were due to fly out, Steve was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. This was an extremely anxious time for us, but thankfully with the excellent medical care he received he made a miraculous recovery and was fit to travel. From the moment we arrived we knew we had picked the perfect place, the hotel and setting was beautiful. During our first week we had meetings with our Wedding Co- ordinator and a visit to Paphos Town Hall for the legal side of things. Each day was getting more and more exciting as we greeted our wedding guests when they arrived at the hotel, totalling 31 of us all together. On the morning of our wedding day we awoke to glorious sunshine. After a leisurely breakfast us ladies had booked to have our hair and make up done at the hotel spa which we were really happy with. All done it was time to put on my wedding dress. I wore a beautiful gown purchased from Bridal Couture by Josephine in Cheadle and a bracelet from Tiffany’s which was a surprise wedding gift off Steve. The photographer arrived and took pre-wedding shots of Dad, Mum and myself outside my room which had a large enclosed terrace, its own private pool and fabulous views of the golf course. The first mode of transport was the hotels golf buggy. Dad and I sat in the back as it whisked us up to the Anoi Tavern. Steve and I had arranged to meet there, together with our parents prior to our guests arriving for a drinks and canapés reception. As I walked towards Steve we both had tears in our eyes. The men looked very handsome in their wedding suits and Mum and Dianne looked lovely in their wedding outfits. Such a happy atmosphere as we mingled with our guests before the open top ‘Exclusive Wedding Bus’ arrived at 4pm. Everyone onboard to the sounds of ‘We’re all going on a Summer Holiday’. So much fun, everyone was singing and dancing and the official party hadn’t even started yet! The bus set off to Paphos Harbour whilst Dad, Mum and I waited in the Tavern for the wedding car to arrive, giving me time to reflect thinking ‘wow, this is really happening’. As we drew up at the quayside there was a red carpet laid out leading up to the Sea Star Yacht. Dad and I linked arms, walked across the gangplank and up the steps to top deck where all the guests were seated and Steve was standing at the front with the Minister. A Grecian version of Pachelbel’s Cannon in D Major was played as Dad proudly walked me down the aisle. After a beautiful service and wedding vows, Mark, Steve’s Dad, recited a lovely poem. Our guests disembarked the yacht and formed two lines either side of the red carpet. We walked along as Mr and Mrs Bott to a flurry of confetti and the song ‘Celebration’ by Kool and the Gang. Our guests were all given funky sunglasses which we had brought over from the UK to wear for some of the group wedding shots that we had taken by the harbour. Everyone looked amazing. Back on the yacht we cut our wedding cake and had a champagne sailaway. We cruised for an hour and dropped anchor in a bay just in time for the stunning sunset followed by our Mediterranean al fresco food on deck. A poem was read out written by Dianne. It told of how our romance began, places and festivals we had been to, Steve’s proposal to me in Lanzarote and last but not least each guest’s name was mentioned to say thank you for coming. Our first dance was to Greenday’s ‘Time of your Life’ with stage fireworks set off from the rear of the yacht. On the run up to the wedding we had posted out song request cards to our guests. When returned, Steve compiled a playlist and sent it to the yacht company for them to pass on to the DJ we had booked. This was a really good idea as everyone was up dancing and having a great time all night. Towards the end of the evening we had a spectacular firework display to the sounds of Robbie Williams ‘Let Me Entertain You’. This just topped the day off nicely. It was finally time to disembark and catch the wedding bus back to our hotel. We didn’t want the night to end but with the help of parents and everyone who joined us it was a day we will remember forever. Thank you for being a part of it, we had the time of our lives!

It certainly does come around quickly it does not seem two minutes since the last one. In Uttoxeter the Christmas street lights were erected and switched on at the end of November which will give the townsfolk about 6 weeks of the year with a festive atmosphere. I have read in the local press that the annual Victorian Evening has had to be cancelled due to lack of support of the stallholders. In past years it proved to be a very popular event with the public. I know that the weather for the occasion was atrocious last year but it’s the risk you take organising anything in this country and am surprised that if this is the reason in this case that it is a great shame that they have decided to cancel it. Anyway we still have the annual Christmas Cracker Night still going ahead which will compensate and still put us in the Christmas Spirit. Christmas time in Uttoxeter has changed though over the years. I will miss the many characters and Christmas occasions which I have enjoyed in past years. The Uttoxeter Guisers who used to tour around the area visiting local hostelries and private homes performing their mummers play was a local tradition that was handed down through the centuries. They disbanded 13 years ago after the sudden death of one of their stalwarts family members. The members were all characters in their own right and are greatly missed. The letting in of the New Year celebrations with the annual ritual of dancing around the Town’s Christmas tree by literally 100’s of locals was curtailed after vandalism of the tree set in and the council stopped erecting the tree in the Market Place and relocated it to above the Town Hall, shame, it was a great occasion. And last but not least the infamous, the late Mr Vernon Cotterill with his Christmas tradition of the Carving of the Boars Head in the White Hart Hotel. Vernon’s skills were renowned in the area which everyone who remembers him will recall. To sign off for this year I will tell you a little story about one of Vernon’s (who was a very dear friend of mine) exploits that still tickles me to this day. Vernon Cotterill Vernon was an excellent butcher and baker and was especially renowned for his Pork Pies. On one particular occasion Vernon had had an altercation with one of his customers regarding an unpaid account. The customer however did not relent in settling his due debt but carried on regardless still placing orders with him expecting his usual 1st class service. As Xmas approached he placed a further order with Vernon for one of his Special Xmas Family Size Renowned Pork Pies. Vernon duly obliged even though he still had not be paid for past supplies. On Xmas Day Evening the mentioned customer had gathered together his family and friends round to his home for a Buffet, the pride of place would be Vernon’s Renowned Pork Pie. He duly bragged about how fortunate he was in acquiring such a very sought after and limited commodity. With all his friends and family gathered around he commenced to cut into the pie to all his lip smacking expectant guests only to find that Vernon had replaced all the meat content of the pie with Sawdust!!!! Vengeance is total!! Have a great Christmas and New Year everyone and I will be back with you next year. T alented individuals at DE Healthcare, a provider of care services for adults with learning disabilities in Uttoxeter, recently took to the stage to perform as part of a highly anticipated competition. The event, which was held at the family-run care provider’s specialist Hub facility [based in the town centre on Church Street], saw more than 20 clients take to the stage to perform an act of their choice. Clients of DE Healthcare regularly take part in and are given the opportunity to organise fun and exciting events, giving them the opportunity to put their skills to the test and take part in the activities they enjoy most. This helps individuals to build on all-important qualities such as learning how to work as part of a team and managing time. Its latest talent competition, DE’s Got Talent, featured a variety of acts including drumming, rapping and even dancing. The winner of the exciting event was Ashley Wilson, who despite having no verbal communication, wowed the audience with an emotional rendition of ‘Let it go’ from Disney’s Frozen. Second prize was awarded to Mikey Jones, who performed a fantastic Roy Orbison drum set. Third place was presented to Alan Hunter, who along with support from staff member Jennie James, performed a dance routine to Jump the Line by Harry Belafonte. The worthy winners were awarded with prize money and a special talent trophy, while all the performers also received a goody bag for their efforts. Tracey Fletcher, Managing Director at DE Healthcare, said: “The competition was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the many talents of some of our amazing clients and build their confidence. The Hub is designed to be a place where people with learning difficulties can gain new experiences and be inspired to learn new skills and interact with others in the community. “It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm for the competition from our clients and staff. Everyone who took part worked really hard to put on a brilliant show and I know that all those who came to watch had a brilliant time.” Spotlight shines on talented performers held at DE Healthcare in Uttoxeter

My Monthly Musings by Cecily Cowans of Cheadle A s I get older, I find myself using expressions that my mother used… and sometimes I even seem to express them in my mother’s voice! One of these expressions is ‘The country has gone mad!’ often referring to an item of news featuring an unbelievably horrific crime or the transfer cost of a Premier League footballer. I found myself using her expression, but most definitely in my own voice, when I realised that Donald Trump was to be the 45th President of the USA. Two days later, I went to do my weekly shopping in that well known low cost store. Not the one that begins and ends with the same letter. The other one. As I was deciding which type of rice to buy, I realised that the couple next to me were standing still. As was the man in the middle of the aisle. I glanced at my watch and it was 11.00 am. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Shoppers were observing a 2 minutes’ silence. One small child was hushed by her mother. Then a bell rang and we all carried on selecting our purchases. During those 120 seconds I realised that the country wasn’t mad at all but compassionate and eternally grateful to those who died - in order to keep us all safe. There are no veterans left from World War 1 and the youngest of those who were old enough to join up or be conscripted at the start of the Second World War are now in their 90s. In just a few years none of those who fought for our country will be marching in Remembrance Sunday parades and it will be up to us to remember all those who died or suffered - and in the very many conflicts since 1945 - by wearing a poppy and standing silently in a supermarket. Ginny’s Community Corner by Ginny Gibson of Uttoxeter T he phrase ‘That’s just not cricket,’ is a short statement that conveys so much. The dictionary definition of the phrase states – if behaviour is not cricket, it means it’s not honest or moral. There is something very upstanding about cricket and the 11 men/women who are going out onto the field to defend their wicket with a willow bat against a fast red ball. The game originated in south east England and became a national sport in the 18th Century. Lords Cricket Ground, is seen as the home of Cricket, was opened in 1814 with the first game played on 22nd June of that year. Closer to home is Checkley Cricket Club, which was founded in 1860 thanks to the interest, kind patronage and the personal involvement of the Philips family of the Heybridge Estate, Lower Tean. The Club played on various grounds within the Heybridge estate including a site near to the New Broom (formerly New Inn) and Spion Kop situated between Lower Tean and Leigh and because of one of the relocations, the Club’s name was changed to Lower Tean Cricket Club in 1902. After first entering league cricket in 1905 by joining the Blythe Bridge & District League its name reverted to Checkley Cricket Club in 1909. Cricket resumed after the First World War in 1919 when Lt. Col. H.B.Philips made the present ground available and provided a pavilion and mowers. The new pavilion was built in the 80’s. Checkley Cricket Club can be found at Four Trees, Uttoxeter Road, Checkley, Staffordshire ST10 4NA (Telephone 01538 724170) and when I met with Gavin Carr, the current Chairman of the Club, he explained that they are all passionate about the game and their history and want to continue to encourage young and old to play. When I asked the age range of players, I was amazed; you can start from 5yrs old and never retire, if you don’t want too. So Cricket can be with you for life. The commitment of the coaching staff has recently meant the 1st XI Team (men’s seniors) have had a very successful season – they played and entered 3 cup competitions and won 2 of them and are now County Champions having a victorious win over Walsall in September. The cricket season is played from April through to September each year and the 1st XI, 2nd XI and 3rd XI can be found around the county playing most weeks in the North Staffs & South Cheshire Premier Division and a Sunday XI which also plays each week in the Stone & District League. At present the club has 130 junior players and 41 senior players. Winter training for seniors takes place at Denstone College and for Juniors at various venues such as Cheadle Academy, Checkley Community Centre and Uttoxeter Leisure Centre, so in fact it is an all year round sport. For more details on both Junior and Senior sessions, please visit www.checkleycc.co.uk or contact Gavin Carr on 07989 703742. They also have a Facebook page so you can see photos of all the teams - Checkley ACES www.facebook.com/groups/103637257501/?fref= nf The Club has 11 qualified coaches to train the 130 juniors and training of the senior players is looked after by Simon Guy, Director of Cricket at Denstone College. The history of the club means that great grandfathers, grandfathers, fathers and sons have all played at the club and in 2011 they introduced girls and ladies cricket, so that it truly is a family sport. During the summer, training takes place for Juniors between 6-8pm on Friday nights and for Seniors its Tuesday 6-8pm. If like me you don’t know much about the laws of cricket and want to have a look at a great animation video, that Stephen Fry has put one together for Lords Cricket Club, which is fantastic. www.lords.org/mcc/laws- of-cricket/laws-of-cricket-animations/ However, if you don’t feel able to play but still want to be involved, then you have the opportunity of becoming a coach, with a 3 weekend coaching badge being offered by the club or you can also go on the Umpire Course in February and so you get to gesture FOUR or SIX or even OUT. The 3rd XI team, which is very much the Club’s Development side, have a policy of playing 4 Seniors and the rest are picked from the under 17 players, so you could be involved quite quickly in playing senior cricket. In total the club has 4 Senior Teams and 12 Junior Teams, including 2 Girls Teams, an U21 team, a Veteran Over 45’s Team and a Ladies Team, which means that you have lots of chance to be involved and play a game during the season. Clearly with all these teams the club is looking for more ground to practice and play on, so if you have a field that you would like to donate, as Lt. Col. H.B.Philips did back at the beginning of the century, then please do get in touch with the club. Of course there is a cost to playing and for a nominal fee of £25 per year, you can join the Junior side or if you are a senior then you will pay £65. However there is also a Social membership of £25 because if you are involved with the Club the social side is very active. The club has a fantastic function room, where they put on lots of events throughout the year to raise funds for the club. Recently they have hosted a Beer Festival, Halloween Party, Casino Night and there will be a Family Christmas Chocolate Bingo night on 1st December, a Michael Buble Tribute Night on 8th December and a Christmas Party of 17th December. The Club Bar Manager Carl Jackson is passionate about our real ales and for the second year running, our Club has been voted Staffordshire Moorlands CAMRA Club of the Year. Club Chairman Gavin tells me they are extremely grateful of the support they receive from local businesses who recognise the hard work that goes in to ensuring the Club continue to offer the community the facility of cricket and a social environment. They have 4 main sponsors at present, Pro Drive, Andy Carr Electrical Services, AH Brookes Solicitors and The Raddle Inn at Hollington. If you want to be involved in that aspect of the Club, then get in touch with one of the 18 Committee members and they will give you details. So if you want to be involved with a sport that has a strong team spirit, that is all year round, that you can play from age 5 up to forever, has a strong moral and honest theme running through it, then Cricket is for you. You never know you could be the next Freddie Flintoff, Ian Botham, Charlotte Edwards or Jimmy Anderson. Checkley Cricket Club - Staffs Cup 2016

This is always very difficult for me as I am so passionate about cooking and baking. I joined Slimming World and I have managed to lose almost 3 stone! So this Christmas, I am going to stick at it, as I feel fantastic and try not to over indulge!! I will, of course, be making all my usual treats for my family, but I will make a few healthier alternatives. The following Chocolate Log is still delicious, but much lower in fat than my usual. You will need:- 1 1/2 oz self raising flour 1/2 oz good quality cocoa powder 4 large free range eggs 2 oz caster sugar For the filling 5 oz fat free natural fromage frais 11g sachet low fat Hot Chocolate drink, e.g Options Artificial sweetener to taste 4oz raspberries To decorate - Small amount of melted 70% dark chocolate to drizzle Icing sugar Edible glitter Preheat your oven to 180˚C. Whisk together the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy. Sift in your flour and cocoa powder and fold in with metal spoon. Pour your mixture into a lined 12” x 8” Swiss Roll tin and smooth the surface. Bake for approx. 10-12 mins, until cooked and springy to the touch. Turn out onto a sheet of lightly sugared baking parchment which has been placed on top of a slightly damp, clean tea towel. I find it easier at this stage to roll your cake using the baking parchment and tea towel, and then leave to cool. This seems to prevent your cake from cracking. When cool remove the lining paper and trim the edges. If your cake does crack, dont worry as you can hide it with icing sugar. To make your filling, mix the fromage frais with the chocolate powder, reserving a little to sprinkle on top. Fold in the raspberries and spread over the chocolate sponge. Roll your sponge again. Place on a serving plate and drizzle with a small amount of melted dark chocolate. Sprinkle with your reserved chocolate powder, icing sugar and edible glitter and your cake is ready to eat. You can of course fill your cake with whipped cream and raspberries which, of course, is not quite so healthy but very delicious!! Should I colour my hair Grey? M ore and more people are hopping on the grey hair dye train. What started as a popular hair color on Pinterest has grown to be one of the most sought after hair trends on Instagram. But while naturally going grey requires no work besides waiting, going artificially grey calls for quite a bit of work. Before you settle on grey hair, you have a few decisions to make. Namely, are you willing to put your hair through the potential damage from bleach lightening? Preparation is vital! 6 Months before stop colouring your hair, grow out your previous hair colour for as long as possible to give the bleach a chance of removing it, the result will be more even. 2 weeks before get a Moroccanoil hair mask treatment, bleach will always dehydrate the hair, so apply the mask often in the run up to bleaching your hair, this will help minimize breakage and dryness. 48 hours before don’t wash your hair, natural hair oils will help to prevent any irritation when the bleach/colour is processing. Any time before, mentally prepare yourself for having some length removed, any hair which is very damaged will need to be cut off. Unless you have a naturally light-blond hair color, going grey means bleaching your hair to strip out the color before the colour is applied. Even when it’s done by a professional, bleaching your hair means you’re going to have some breakage and damage. The first thing you’ll need to do is bleach your hair. Grey colour on top of light blonde hair results in the grey hair that’s popular right now. If your going blonde from brown, it will probably require two processes of bleach to get the hair to the level of blonde color required for gray hair. At Spires we would include OLAPLEX with the bleach to recover the hair as its lifted. After two rounds of bleach, we would apply a purple toner to the hair and let it sit for about 20 minutes before washing it out. Why is the toner purple? Because it directly counteracts the yellow unwanted undertones in hair to give you the white-silver colour. In order for grey dye to look true to its colour, it should be applied to hair that has a white-silver undertone, which is exactly what you’ll get when you put purple toner on bleached hair with a yellow undertone. Once the hair is bleached and toned, the final step is the grey dye itself. After about 30 minutes of sitting on the hair, it’s washed out. Total time: 7hrs + Total Cost (before maintenance products): £200. Prices vary depending on your hair and stylist level of experience. Hair Care by Kim Plant, Spires Hairdressers, Uttoxeter

The company’s long association with Thomas Alleyne’s School has helped many hundreds of students discover the most modern technology through fun sessions and innovative competitions. The latest donation has helped buy two more programmable robot systems which students use to enter the robotics competition, ‘LEGO Mindstorms’. Hopes are high this year after a team from Alleyne’s reached the national finals of the contest for the last three years with their robot programmed to carry out a sequence of tasks. JCB funds also help to pay for the school’s entry in the Greenpower go-kart competition. More than 300 GCSE and A level students benefit from the funding, which pays for the upkeep of specialist equipment like MIG and TIG welding. It may also be used to buy a new brazing hearth. Head of Design and Technology Graeme Quigley said financial pressures meant support from JCB was vital if the school was to maintain the range and quality of education in the subject. He said: “We were so very pleased when JCB confirmed they were continuing to support us for the current academic year. We couldn’t do what we do without them. JCB enables our students to work with state-of-the-art kit, learning practical solutions that are relevant to the world of work. The robots help students learn advanced process input and output by seeing real world applications. JCB has supported the school for many, many years. It helps our students be successful, and through our rolling programme the older ones studying for A level become ambassadors to mentor the year 9 student.” JCB backs school design and technology learning

The contract from A-Plant – which follows its purchase last year of 1,500 JCB machines worth £50 million – includes a fleet of 13-tonne JS130 tracked excavators made at JCB Heavy Products in Uttoxeter. The deal is also good news for JCB’s other Staffordshire factories in Rocester and Cheadle which will manufacture mini excavators, Loadall telescopic handlers and rough terrain fork lift trucks which have been ordered. A-Plant is also buying a fleet of JCB site dumpers. All the machines are being supplied by JCB dealer Greenshields JCB. For the first time A-Plant is also investing in a range of UK-produced generators for the rental market from JCB Power Products. The range – produced by the former Broadcrown business acquired by JCB last year – is fitted with the revolutionary ‘JCB LiveLink for Power feature’. Almost 40 sets have been purchased, providing enough power to keep two hospitals or 1,000 homes running. The latest order marks a major milestone for A-Plant as it now means the company has bought more than 11,000 machines from JCB since the first one was purchased more than 25 years ago. JCB UK & Ireland Sales Director Dan Thompstone said: “JCB has a long-standing relationship with A-Plant and we are delighted to cement that with this huge order. Winning business like this is testament to JCB’s continued introduction of innovative products supported by unrivalled parts and service back-up from the JCB UK dealer network.” A-Plant Marketing Director Asif Latief said: “This order is part of our investment programme to ensure our customers continue to get the most advanced, reliable, safe and environmentally friendly equipment. This year’s investment also includes JCB generators developed by the former Broadcrown business, which is a first for A-Plant and recognises our commitment to offering quality new products to our customers. “Our investment programme is unrivalled in the industry and coupled with the high levels of customer support we provide, ensures we are firmly positioned to be the obvious choice for rental equipment whether our customers are local builders, events suppliers or national contractors.” A-Plant, which is part of FTSE-100 company Ashtead Group plc, is the UK’s largest equipment rental company with over 150 service centres in Britain, more than 3,000 employees nationwide and over 30,000 customers in the construction, industrial, commercial, utility, public sector, homeowner and events markets. The JCB Loadalls are fitted with the JCB 55kw Ecomax engine that complies with the latest emissions legislation without the need for additional after-treatment such as a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) otherwise known as AdBlu. Offering significant fuel savings and simplicity of operation in end user maintenance and servicing. JCB is the market leader in the UK and Ireland construction equipment markets and has eight dealers with 48 depots providing unrivalled back- up support to customers. JCB lands big deal as A-Plant orders 1,200 machines

Have I got news for you by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions Club and a former BBC Chief News Reporter. ‘Tis the season to be jolly amused It’s the season of goodwill to all men. And the season to be jolly. About time too. What a dreadful year this has been. Her Majesty the Queen famously spoke of her annus terribilis in 1992 – the year of royal divorces and the Windsor Castle fire. At that stage she’d been on the throne a mere 40 years. If she dreamed she’d live to be our longest-serving monarch, then she would have realised she’d live to see 2016. And 2016 has been an annus terribilissimus – not just a terrible year, but the most terrible. The European referendum and the election of President Trump, whatever the rights and wrongs of those democratic decisions, were hugely divisive, pitting friends and family against each other. And was there anybody amongst us who was not touched in 2016 by the death of somebody famous? The world of music lost massive talents from David Bowie and Prince to Leonard Cohen. We also saw the last of three of the greatest women comedy writers this country has produced, Carla Lane, Victoria Wood and Caroline Aherne, two more great comedy actors, Ronnie Corbett and Gene Wilder, the great radio broadcasters Terry Wogan and Jimmy Young, and the Greatest himself, Muhammad Ali. And as if the Old Year were making sure no tiny section of the populace – not even quiz nerds and fans of 60s TV secret agents - was denied a share of the collective grief, we even lost the last of the Magnificent Seven, Robert Vaughn, the original man from UNCLE. Adam’s golden ray of sunshine So, good riddance 2016. Was there any good to come of it? Well, of course there was. An Olympic gold medal was the richly-deserved culmination of an incredible couple of years for Adam Peaty. The role played by his nan, Mavis Williams, as social media cheerleader-in-chief made it even more of a feelgood factor and turned her into another locally- produced international celebrity. Adam’s homecoming parade through the town was another peak. It was a privilege to hear his inspirational impromptu speech on the town hall steps. His television interviews and celebrity appearances also show him to be a great ambassador for the town. There was a mammoth medal haul for Team GB in Rio but Uttoxeter’s Adam was the first of the Gold Rush, and it’s to his credit that his powerful young shoulders carry that responsibility so effortlessly and with such dignity. A true sporting hero. Guy Fawkes – the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions At a more everyday – or more accurately every year - level, we had one of the most successful bonfires I can remember last month. It was superbly attended, raised thousands of pounds for local causes, and it was wonderful to have so many local schoolchildren involved building guys for the top of the fire, many for the first time. Some of their teachers said they too had never built a Guy Fawkes, and it struck me that the ‘last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions’ is being forgotten by history, much as the penny-for- the-guy collections of my youth have been supplanted by the American import trick-or-treat. True it’s easier to buy a cheap Halloween costume and traipse from house to house, than it is to create a human effigy from old clothes and newspapers, but however you dress up All Hallows’ Eve – and there’s an awful lot of dressing up involved – its popularity is more of a reflection of commercial pressure than any interest in its pagan origins. A feast of festive viewing So what is there to smile about this Christmas? For a start, we can be grateful we live in the age of recording technology. But not because of the Christmas fare served up by our broadcasters. I’m thinking again about all those celebrity deaths. If we’d been born a century earlier, before Mr Edison’s phonograph and the many improvements on Mr Logie Baird’s televisual device, the performers and sportsmen we lost this year would be remembered only through fading press cuttings. But thanks to those inventions and their digital offspring, we can enjoy the work of the great stars every day. Given the number of big names who passed on this year, that’s enough entertainment for the whole festive season. I think I’ll start with the first Ali-Liston fight. Six rounds of brutality. Then grace, poetry, a shuffle, and mayhem in the ring. That should go down well with the Christmas pud. And the dancing is better than Strictly. Merry Christmas, everyone. Let The Voice Be With You by Les Humphries of Rocester H ello readers, well not many more days to Christmas, it seems to come around more quickly every year doesn’t it? Remembrance weekend brought the best out of the great British public, who ignored the pacifists and anti Monarchists and generously gave to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal - not to celebrate war, but in respectful memory of all those brave men and women who gave their lives for their Country, and I would like to personally thank all those people at JCB HQ where I sell my poppies, for their contributions. This year the JCB Academy held their own poppy launch attended by local dignitaries, Lord Bamford himself making the opening speech and adding the final poppy to the marvellous display which the students had put together. I had the honour of dipping the Denstone Standard to the Last Post played by student Joe Hey. Another student of the Academy, 17 year old Isobel Fitzgerald, did the honours for us at both Denstone and Rocester on the official Remembrance Sunday on the 13th of November. It is wonderful that these young people are prepared to give up their time to attend these occasions in this day and age. Many thanks to Stuart McCrone for providing the trumpeters, who are both members of his music school. Sixteen year old L/Cpl Jack Waddington of Rocester now represents the Uttoxeter Army Cadet Force as Standard Bearer. The Cadets also give up their time selling poppies and attending parades at Remembrance events, such as the popular Remembrance Concert in St. Mary’s Church Uttoxeter. Whilst at the other end of the age spectrum The Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir attended their usual Concert at Lask Edge on the afternoon of Remembrance Sunday in their little chapel. As always loads of activities taking place at St. Michaels Church in Rocester during December. This Issue of The Voice will probably hit the streets too late for the Victorian Market which takes place on the 3rd and 4th of December so if you didn’t go you’ve missed it! However, plenty more Christmas enjoyment for you, starting with the Christingle Service at 1015 am on Sunday the 11th (normal Sunday Service time). One week later is the Carol Service on Sunday the 18th at 4pm, always well attended. This year on Christmas Eve at 4pm there is to be a donkey Nativity Procession through the Village which will culminate at the stable where the Heavenly Host, Three Kings, and many others will be in attendance, great for the kids and mums and dads alike. Later that evening at 1130pm is the Holy Communion Service, or Midnight Eucharist as it is sometimes called, another popular Service which takes us into Christmas Day, when of course later on Christmas Morning at 10am another Holy Communion Service is available. As I have included the Christmas arrangements for St. Michaels Church I would also like to bring Rocester folks attention to a fund raising project for the Church, which is the brainchild of former Rocester lad Bill Woodier. After spending his younger years in the Village, Bill went on his travels and now as a pensioner living in Cheadle and after talking to my daughter Helen via Facebook he got in touch with me. Some years ago, when Rocester used to have a yearly Carnival, the late George Large and myself used to film them on Super 8 Cine, which of course was silent. Ian Woodhead then took it a stage further by transferring them (with our permission) to Video, a medium which was not available when we made the original films. He then added footage of his own shot on Video, and released them on the Happy Days label adding music to our silent footage. Bill has taken it a stage further by transferring the films to DVD, adding appropriate music to fit the action, and put in some wonderful titles to produce a very professional result of chronicling Rocester of yesteryear which I am sure many of you will already have caught glimpses of on Facebook. Many of the people on film sadly are no longer with us, and many of the children are now grown up with families of their own. I really enjoyed watching them again, sometimes with a lump in my throat, and I am sure a lot of you will get a real kick out of trying to recognise yourselves or your families 30 years ago. No sex, plenty of violence in the pram races, and lots of nostalgic fun. The DVDs are priced at £5 and all proceeds go to St. Michael's Church. Both Ian Woodhead and myself have given our blessing and I’m sure George would have done the same. This is his legacy to Rocester, and the village and St Michael’s are lucky to have such a friend of the village. So TTFN everyone have a great Christmas, see you in the New Year. Les Mr. R. Boot, Mr. L Humphries, Miss. I. Fitzgerald and the Reverend Richardson before the Service on Remembrance Sunday at Denstone Church, Lychgate Down on the Farm by Angela Sargent “Welcome, wild North-easter! Shame it is to see, odes to every zephyr; Ne’er a verse to thee.” Charles Kingsley D ecember already and dark nights and inclement weather give me more time and inclination to stay indoors and catch up with record keeping and paperwork, but I’m easily distracted. As we’re going into winter, there will only be Pheasants to see frequently, pecking over spilt grain when we have fed the sheep and sparrows clearing up in the yards by the cattle troughs. Most other birds and small animals will be hibernating or keeping warm and dry in snug nests, in sheds and thick hedges and holes in the ground, coming out only to look for food as necessary. Our repair work on fences and hedges begins as the cattle have come in and we will be checking up on the sheep still out in the fields. Feed will be taken out if the weather becomes particularly bad and we have to make sure that there is access to water too, breaking ice in troughs if necessary. I keep reading about how‘intensified’ our farming in this country is and find it very hard to reconcile what I read with what I know and see! I see our own farm (not that much different from any other) and I see grass fields surrounded by hedgerows- some broad and high, some newly laid and patches re-planted. I walk along these hedges and hear them full of chirruping and buzzing during the warmer months and look up into the tall trees- the Ash, Birch, Beech and Oak and notice squirrels, wasps and Bees. I take short cuts through our arable fields and cross the wide grass margins that run all around- but not just grass-there is greater burnet, birds foot trefoil, vetch, meadow sweet, campion, clover. This farm has been in environmental schemes for the last fifteen years, as have a good proportion of all agricultural land and, yet, for many years before that we grew more corn on more acres with more inputs and there was less of our land down to pasture, with higher numbers of livestock on that pasture. We used more chemical with less regulation too, but the driver was to produce food and the plentiful supply has meant we are all living longer too. Just what is meant by ‘intensive’? At different times of the year we work intensively- lambing and harvesting spring to mind, does that make us ‘intensive’? So, in the last twenty years, farming in general has done the very opposite of ‘intensify’, with the numbers of livestock and acres of cropping declining. The collective thought behind this ‘intensive’ label is so out of touch and out dated. There must be other forces having an effect on the demise of some of our wildlife- urban development/infrastructure (lots of new houses and roads) and weather maybe (but don’t forget that some species are increasing in numbers, It’s not all doom and gloom). An arresting performance of Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir was accompanied by the playing of two beautiful violinists as well as Katie Riddle on the piano. The dynamic range of the choir was illustrated in this first concert by conductor Jakob Grubbström. A varied selection of choral items was succeeded by a virtuoso performance by Sarah Farmer on the violin of Gerald Finzi’s Introit ably accompanied by Katie Riddle on piano. During the interval the presence of the mayor, Alan Noyes was utilised as he presented a long service award to Philip Knight who has sung tenor with the choir since his arrival in Uttoxeter in 1966. Bach’s motet was ably accompanied by the two violins so that when they played in unison only an increase in volume was heard. Patricia Stepien and Sarah were perfectly matched. The harmonies were beautiful. This was emphasised in the accompaniament of the Faure requiem. Here Sarah played viola and she and Patricia gave a poignant note to an inspirational piece. Rheinberger’s lovely Abendlied was the prelude to a magnificent ending to the concert with Haydn’s Te Deum. The powerful male singers gave a magnificence to the performance balanced by the soft and gentle flow of the allegro. The distinctive surprises of Haydn’s composition were effectively contrived and the piece ended on a triumphant note. Jakob is to be congratulated, not only for presenting such an interesting concert, but also for his development of the choir into a professional and effective ensemble. The audience praised the violinists on a beautiful performance and the men on their effectiveness. Soloists:- Katie Riddle, piano, Sarah Farmer, viola, Patricia Stepien violin and Jakob Grubbström, conductor.

All-time local soccer Hall of Fame Team By Roy ‘Razzer’Astbury Each month Uttoxeter’s best known character Roy ‘Razzer’Astbury will compile his very own ‘All- Time Local Football Team’which in his opinion is the very best of players past and present. ‘Razzer’will create a team in each issue of The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice which he believes incorporates all the ingredients of a football outfit which could be unbeatable! He will be delving into his thoughts to remember all the terrific players in years gone by whilst selecting those who are exceptional in our present day. It should be a fantastic talking point in our community and no doubt you all will have your views on ‘Razzer’s Hall of Fame team. Sport is in my blood... by Jeff Wood of Cheadle, dedicated to local sport for a lifetime... I must begin this column by thanking those readers who sent their good wishes to me during my recent spell in hospital, which caused me to miss writing an article in the last edition of The Voice and also meant that I missed watching a few games of football. I can now report that I am much better and back to fitness (or at least back to the wrong side of the touchline). Sadly I have to mention the passing of a couple of well known personalities since my last column. Many sportsmen will have known Neil Hemmings as he served as Chairman of Moddershall Cricket Club during their North Staffs and South Cheshire Premier League table championship season a few years ago. His son Simon was a regular player in the team during that season. Neil was also well known as a player and official at Leek Hockey Club and was a prominent member of Stone Wheelers cycling club for many years. Along with myself, many of Neil’s former working colleagues were present and I had the opportunity to renew my acquaintance with them. Two former players of Stoke Rugby Club were there, namely Dick Ellis and Neil McPherson. Dick was also a former player with Birkenhead Park RUFC, and he used to recount the occasion when he was a member of the winning side when Bill Beaumont was in the opposition team Fylde, whilst Neil formerly played rugby for both Walsall and Stoke, as well as captaining Staffordshire. A true all round sportsman who could have succeeded at any sport he chose, Neil for many years also represented Staffordshire at tennis and still plays for the veterans. Also present was Kevin Lewis, whom I’ve not seen for a number of years. As the footballing fraternity will know, as a youngster Kevin was with Manchester United prior to going to Crewe. He also managed Telford United after a spell in management at Leek Town, where I first got to know him. But perhaps he was best known as landlord of the Dyers Arms at Leek, a very well used hostelry frequented by many of Leek’s Sunday League teams after their matches, as my fellow columnist Bake will undoubtedly confirm. The other sad passing was that of George Lewicki, who I well remember as a goalscoring forward with Milton Rangers at their height. I have recounted the incident previously in this column when, on one occasion we played against them, our principal tactic, devised by Bill Spooner and myself, in order to attempt to minimise their inevitable superiority was to get the ball into the adjacent canal as often as possible. A crude tactic admittedly, but it was to some measure successful. By the time all three match balls were in the canal at the same time, George was going berserk as he could see the chance of more goals passing him by as the minutes ticked away. It was sad to learn of George’s death as he was a few years younger than myself. On a brighter note, I have been watching Cheadle Town’s first team in the Staffs County Senior League Premier Division recently, not least because my lads Olly and Tim are playing there. Cheadle are an extremely well run club with top management and a first class backroom staff, without which no club can survive. Terry Fowell, an old adversary of mine, does a sterling job performing those essential tasks such as putting the nets up and taking them down and generally seeing that everything is prepared for the games, home and away. At away games, Terry sometimes lets me carry the water bottles or first aid kit into the ground so that I don’t have to pay an admission charge (even the reduced charge for senior citizens). I’ve mentioned previously Mark Alcock the manager in this column. I was in conversation recently with Dennis Vickers, who I am led to believe is the League liaison officer, and Rob Drummond of Leek CSOB. I know Rob as I used to play cricket with him. Rob believed he was the oldest player in the League but, as I told him, he is far from it as that honour surely belongs to Mark Alcock, many years his senior, who turned out recently for Town and produced a great performance in midfield . I won’t just say how old Mark is, but as I told him, I was fifty when Olly was born and Mark has played competitive football with both of us, which is truly remarkable. There are of course others connected with Cheadle Town whom I shall doubtless mention in future articles, but the club is indeed fortunate to have as its director of football Alan Beaman, my fellow columnist. Alan of course has a wealth of experience in the game, having played and managed for many years at higher levels. Suffice to say his presence is worth at least a goal to the side, such is his astuteness and management skill. I have played with and against Alan during my career but it is only in the last few months that I have had any extended conversation with him regarding the game. I must say I also enjoy reading his column in The Voice. Just one negative note about Cheadle Town is that, whilst the off field facilities are good apart possibly from the absence of covered accommodation, they haven’t got a better pitch to play on. A town such as Cheadle deserves a ground which befits the club which plays on it and Thorley Drive just isn’t up to the standard of the team. Unlike almost all other clubs in the league, Town can’t even charge for admission. Maybe things will improve and hopefully during my lifetime. Only time will tell. Christmas is fast approaching and, on New Years Eve, I shall celebrate being a year older. I am hoping to go away for my birthday where no one will find me. The only problem is that it falls on a Saturday and there may of course be a fixture on that day, in which case I shall be forced to change my arrangements. Whatever the outcome, I wish all readers a Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year. TERRY GADSBY Hanbury FC Terry played in a great Hanbury team back in the day. Terrific reader of the game with plenty of talent. Great guy too! RICHARD PARKINSON Abbots Bromley FC Solid and combative player who always got the better of forwards. GRAHAM DIXON Uttoxeter Rangers What can you say about Uttoxeter legend Graham Dixon? Ultra competitive, wore his heart on his sleeve. ASHLEY JUSTIN Rocester FC Talented player, terrific on and off the ball. Excellent passer with great vision. MENSHA KINCH Rocester FC Amazing skills and terrific turn of pace. Mensha has the qualities of a top player. GAVIN CARR Uttoxeter Town FC Still going strong on the cricket circuit and back in the day a wonderful footballer. Gav has given local sport a huge amount over the years and I know he has enjoyed every minute of a glittering career. MATTY RUTTER Rocester FC Loves to run midfield with precision. Matty has an edge in the tackle and a superb football brain. GARETH THOMAS Abbots Bromley FC Fantastic and dependable local player who is a terrific man to have in any team. Gareth does a lot for local football on all levels and he really is a great man to know. Top player. ADAM SEABRIDGE Cheadle Town End Loves to score goals and does so regularly. Adam is a credit to his brilliant manager Howard Heath who has done so well with Town End over the years. LLOYD DYERS Cheadle Town End Another from the Town End Academy. Terrific power upfront and a menace to defenders. STEVE KNIGHT Doveridge FC Excellent keeper with tremendous shot-stopping qualities. We have inserted one football club each player has performed for. Obviously, many have played for several clubs in their careers.
