objectives
Define mechanical ventilation.
Discuss the Purpose of mechanical ventilation.
Discuss the Nursing care of mechanical ventilation.
Mechanical ventilation
• A medical procedure that involves the use of a mechanical
ventilator or breathing machine to assist or replace a patient's
spontaneous breathing.
• This technology is employed when a person's respiratory
system is unable to function effectively on its own, often due to
conditions like severe respiratory failure, lung disease, or after
certain surgical procedures.
• The mechanical ventilator delivers a controlled volume of air or
oxygen into the patient's lungs, helping to maintain adequate
oxygen levels and remove carbon dioxide from the body, thereby
supporting the patient's respiratory function until they can
breathe independently again.
Purpose
•Ventilators are used to provide mechanical
ventilation for patients with respiratory failure
who cannot breathe effectively on their own.
•They are also used to provide stability of the
chest wall after trauma or surgery and when
patients is sedated or pharmacologically
paralyzed.

lips.
• Endo tracheal tubing's must be change with

Nursing care of ventilated
child
• Ensure ventilator settings are adjusted
according to doctors prescriptions.
