2. Content
• What are new challenges?
• Why using a simulator?
• What would be the benefits?
• Some features ...
• Use cases
• Showtime
3. Traditional Testing Approach
• Open-loop testing
– playback EMT simulation or
– replay the field-recorded data
• Omicron, Doble, Megger test sets
• Sets a fixed voltage and ramps current from 0 to relay
operates
• Repeats such a test for several operating points
4. What are new challenges?
• New type of applications : smart grids, microgrids, DER
• New protocols : IEC-61850, MMS, C37.118, DNP3, ...
• Increased number of functions
• More complex relay characteristic
• Different vendors have different operating philosophies
and algorithms
• New type of equipment installed : merging unit, pdc, ...
5. Why using a simulator?
• Closed loop testing : response of the IED under test is fed back into the
simulator and possibly affects the simulation
• Perform detailed EMT analysis and testing
• Evaluate relay performance under critical conditions , while it is in service
• Develop and prototype new protection algorithm (RCP)
• Study complex protection scheme and see interaction of real and virtual
relays and their behaviour altogether.
• See interaction between relays and power electronic equipment such as
HVDC, FACTS,
6. What would be the benefits?
• Purchase the best products for a given application
• Make sure the installed equipment is operating correctly
• Analyze any problems efficiently and in great detail
• Demonstrate to a regulator a reliable (selective) performance
• Identify abnormal behaviour of power system or protection
and control equipment
• Study more application cases
7. Some features ...
• Models
– Simulate large grids with loads, generators, transformers, lines,
motors,...
– Simulate complex power electronic converters
– Simulate CT, PT
– Simulate virtual IED and new type of protection
– Relay library
• Simulate various type of faults and of power disturbances
– fault location, fault type and fault interception
– Apparatus internal fault
8. Some features ...
• Test Automation
– Automate test sequences
– Monte Carlo analysis
– Playback recorded data from field
– Scripting and macro recording
– Import and export various file format such as COMTRADE
– Produce report automatically
11. Protocol IEC 61850
IEC 61850 is are international standards defining:
• how to describe the devices in an electrical substation
• how to exchange the information about these devices
2 types of messages:
• Sampled Values (SV)
• Generic Object Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE)
14. Fault 1: Overcurrent
1. Bus-to-ground
fault, 1 or many
phases
2. Bus MTL735_1 is
disconnected and
power flows on
bus MTL735_2

15. Fault 2: Overvoltage
1. A 3000 MW load
is disconnected,
voltage increases
2. Ten 330 MVAR
inductances are
connected to
bring the voltage
back to 1 pu
