2. The very first scenes are a three shot montage.
This immediately introduces the audience to the
characters and the relationship between them.
We empathise with them and are immediately
side with them. We see the dark silhouette of the
main character but are kept from seeing his face.
This adds mystery and acts as an enigma code to
keep the audience guessing and interested. The
closed hands signify togetherness and
friendship. We also see the close relationship.
The third shot of the opening montage style
sequence, identifies the other main character.
We are now aware that he is holding hands, and
helping his friend who is lying in the darkness.
His ‘watchful eye’ is centre frame, so we can see
the ‘brotherly’ relationship. All of this is done
before the production company, which
3. Production Company
The production company is not the first scene in the trailer, which is untypical of the
teaser trailers and coverts the conventions of the British social realism genre. The
production company is an independent company that is not as well known as the ‘big
four’ companies.
4. Establishing Shot
To set the scene for the audience and
introduce them to the culture of the
film, we have an establishing shot.
There is a gloomy, grey sky which
connotes danger and mystery. The
clouds could suggest a metaphoric
storm that is soon to destruct the lives of the characters. We also see the
horses, freely roaming the fast fields and grasslands. Horses are traditionally
used as transport, and are significantly relied upon in the lifestyles of the
lower classes in Yorkshire.
5. Chaotic Family life shown by the older brother protecting his youngest sibling,
and lots of other kids pestering the single mother. This shows the struggle of
lower class lives
The character has been
excluded from school
and is wondering the
streets. The mise on scene
of his hood
up, strengthens his
conformity to the ‘hoody
chav’ stereotype.
A gang of school kids picking on, and bullying a
lonely kid is bullying and is a common feature
of the social
realism genre
6. This is followed by a textual shot of the award the film has one.
7. There is a montage sequence starting with
a police officer consulting the parent of
the main character.
This shot is followed by another quote
about the film. Disrupting the narrative of
the film and showing the chaotic disorder
of the plot.
This is followed by a textual shot of the award the film has one.
8. The next part of the trailer identifies the disequilibrium of the narrative. The
main characters of the film have and fallen out. The rain is pathetic fallacy
signifying the misery on screen.
9. We then have a 8 different star ratings by different institutions with shows
the credibility the film has earned.
The film then slows down in
pace and cuts to black.
10. The final shot is a repeat of the closed hands close up. This again is an enigma
code about what could have happened to lead to the distress shown in the
image.
The trailer ends with a shot about the instructions that have helped produce
and distribute the film. And another with the release date in an eye-catching
font
