Hi, I’m Kirill from MoneyTapp, innovatiove mobile traffic monetization solution. I would like to speak today about the challenges you can meet while working with adnetworks. I mean hear publisher side, when network buys your ad inventory.
Let’s get closer look at basics how it actually works.
So user is playing your game and reaching the moment where the ad should be shown. The app send request through SDK to network ad getting response.
It can be interstitial, banner, video or any other format. Also user can click it or not, he can view it or not.
Happy developer thinks everything is good and getting his revenue from networks based on CPM, CPI or CPC according to delivered results. Everybody seems to be happy, but…
There is a blot on the landscape.
There are 5 biggest challenges for getting higher revenue from your ad traffic monetization. Let me get closer to each one.
True data is everything, and you just can’t understand efficiency without it.
Network can show you just part of essential metrics, to hide poor results.
For example they show you just installs you made for advertiser, but no information about delivered impressions. Your goods are impressions, don’t know this number don’t know how much you sell.
Another example is when you know impressions but have no idea how many request you have sent. You don’t know how much traffic you really have to sell, and know just how much network buys.
The difference meanwhile representы the amount of missed revenue.
Another way to cheat you is to use effective numbers. In this case network decreases requests number it shows you. It will cut off requests which doesn’t meet special requirements. For example it can include just particular countries, expensive devices, user IDs they know.
Showing you 500 K effective impressions and 500 K responses will lead 100% fillrate, while real fillrate will be abut 50% or so. One very well known (even major) network do this stuff with developers.
Same situation with impressions, showing you less impressions (aka effective impressions) will impact into higher CPM number display.
Effective clicks usage lead to better CPC number display. While the real numbers will be on the lower level then reported.
These ways is being used by many networks to hide not very pleasant results and low efficiency.
Another pitfall where you can get trapped is network country coverage.
There is an example of one popular app traffic allocation. Darker yellow means high traffic volume.
Imagine that developer uses 1 large network to monetize this app.
Let’s take a look at how demand of this network is spreaded out. There are top 20 countries highlighted with blue.
Intensity means fillrate level in particular country.
When we bring altogether we can see how much money this developer will lose in different countries. Missed profit is in red.
Next pitfall is quite similar to previous one. When you use 1 single network you are getting demand from quite narrow group od advertisers.
You do not know that another network has better advertiser and demand in Uk or Brazil now. You don’t know that another network just got fantastic order from 1 local company, which is buying all inventory in India with great CPM.
Let me show you 4 large ad networks, there are demand metrics in 8 countries for the same app.
I took same amount or ad requests for each of these countries, did some calculations and got revenue numbers.
So with the same traffic volume, 1 network will give you 10$, second one a bit more. With the 3rd partner you will earn 5,7 dollars and almost 8 dollars with the last one.
Now I show you one of methods we use at MoneyTapp. We use all networks at the same time and sending the traffic to one which show the best efficiency at this moment. Also less effective network still work for back fill. As a result we get 200% revenue growth in compare with ad network just with this trick.
Also what we see quite often is adnetwork decreasing effect. Even if first result was amazing, don’t get relaxed.
Working with 1 network for a long time you supersaturate you users with same ad campaigns. It leads to poor efficiency.
Also you absolutely depends on network current state, bad sales, technical issues, whatever happened in this network influence to your revenue.
