Interventions are built into eAcademy assessments so that teachers and parents
can access a detailed report of student performance on any given assessment.
This allows for increased customization of the overall learning experience.
If an Intervention Alert is issued, students are assigned a specific Task to complete
before being re-assessed on the lesson. Tasks can include review of literature,
exercises or live one-on-one tutoring with a teacher.
Multi-Sensory Engagement
Lessons are introduced and reinforced using a mixture of media to address multiple
learning styles. Highlights include Flash and Discovery Education® videos, podcasts of
each lesson, an interactive Research Center, customized printable textbook, messaging,

The Importance of Communication
in Virtual Learning Environments
75% of school districts have students currently enrolled in fully online or
blended courses.
And this trend continues to grow. Over the past three years, the number of
students engaged in online courses has increased by over 45%.
Source: The Sloan Consortium
As the online learning phenomenon has grown, concerns about appropriate and
effective teaching practices in this environment have increased accordingly. Research
shows the positive correlation that effective communication has on student
achievement. So in an environment where educators, parents, and students have
limited face-to-face contact, apprehension is expected.
EdisonLearning® eSchoolware Instructional Tools enable robust communication
between students, parents and teachers and administrators.

A Spotlight on Satisfaction
Feedback from Provost Academy South Carolina
“Provost Academy is great. It’s completely different than
a traditional school, and it’s completely different than
what you think. It really is a first rate school.”
95% Satisfaction Rate
“My favorite classes are American
History and Life Skills, because it
is an elective that is helping me
prepare for life after high school…
using credit cards, living on my
own, really useful stuff.”
© 2010 EdisonLearning, Inc. All rights reserved 40
“I like Provost Academy
because if I need to I can go
to school at night or on the
weekends. Also, I can attend
school at my own pace. If I’m
behind in one subject or
ahead in another subject, I
don’t have to rush myself or
wait for others to catch up.”
“For us what separates Provost from other traditional
high schools is that it allows the flexibility that our
daughter needs to pursue her interest in the
performing arts and ballet.”

Capital Area Intermediate Unit
The Results
•In its first year, CAOLA program had 13 participating
districts. The program has now grown to 17
school districts in various regions of the state with
more growth in the fall of 2010.
•The program started with 17 students successfully
earning summer school credits. CAOLA now has
230 students enrolled in over 70 different
courses.
•The CAOLA model has proven to be cost-effective,
saving districts thousands of dollars when
compared to dollars they would need to spend on
sending students to virtual charter schools.
“The CAOLA program has helped our students to access
courses that they typically would not be able to take,
whether it is due to limited offerings or scheduling
conflicts. This year one of our students was able to take
a Chinese course. Financially, it doesn’t make sense for
our district to hire a teacher to teach this course, but
eCourses in the CAOLA program gave our student the
opportunity for a valuable l earning experience.”
- Kevin Roberts, Director of Curriculum & CAOLA
Site Coordinator Big Spring School District
The Challenge
School districts in Pennsylvania were facing two
challenges. First, many districts did not have the
resources to provide students with online learning
programs. With no option in the district, increasing
numbers of students were leaving to attend virtual charter
or other non-district schools. Secondly, small districts were
struggling to provide expanded course selections for their
students. Courses, such as AP courses and foreign
languages like Chinese, were not available due to lack of
means to hire teachers for these specific topics. Capital
Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) wanted to help its member
districts address these challenges. They sought to
redesign their high school offerings to increase learning
options for high school students through online learning.
The Solution
CAIU established the Capital Area Online Learning
Association (CAOLA) in 2009 to provide flexible online
learning options to its member districts. Partnering with
EdisonLearning, they expanded their high school offerings
through EdisonLearning’s eCourses. CAOLA was also
able to offer a full-time online high school program through
EdisonLearning’s eAcademy.

“We stand out from other schools because of our EdisonLearning school design; our outstanding
curriculum, the opportunity to work together as a staff to meet common goals and because of monthly
Benchmarks which provide regular, real-time assessments of student performance allowing us to adjust
and inform instruction for each individual child… Without these tools and this structure we wouldn’t be
able to perform at the level we’re performing right now.”
“Accountability and mastery are two attributes that I demand for our students when

two ideals and provide a product that is interactive, easy to navigate, and still holds the
students to high levels of learning..”

Over the past three years, the number of students engaged in online courses has increased by over 45%. Source: The Sloan Consortium As the online learning phenomenon has grown, concerns about appropriate and effective teaching practices in this environment have increased accordingly. Research shows the positive correlation that effective communication has on student achievement. So in an environment where educators, parents, and students have limited face-to-face contact, apprehension is expected. It really is a first rate school.” 95% Satisfaction Rate “My favorite classes are American History and Life Skills, because it is an elective that is helping me prepare for life after high school… using credit cards, living on my own, really useful stuff.” © 2010 EdisonLearning, Inc. If I’m behind in one subject or ahead in another subject, I don’t have to rush myself or wait for others to catch up.” “For us what separates Provost from other traditional high schools is that it allows the flexibility that our daughter needs to pursue her interest in the performing arts and ballet.”

  • 44. Partnership Profile Capital Area Intermediate Unit The Results •In its first year, CAOLA program had 13 participating districts. The program has now grown to 17 school districts in various regions of the state with more growth in the fall of 2010. •The program started with 17 students successfully earning summer school credits. CAOLA now has 230 students enrolled in over 70 different courses. •The CAOLA model has proven to be cost-effective, saving districts thousands of dollars when compared to dollars they would need to spend on sending students to virtual charter schools. “The CAOLA program has helped our students to access courses that they typically would not be able to take, whether it is due to limited offerings or scheduling conflicts. This year one of our students was able to take a Chinese course. Financially, it doesn’t make sense for our district to hire a teacher to teach this course, but eCourses in the CAOLA program gave our student the opportunity for a valuable l earning experience.” - Kevin Roberts, Director of Curriculum & CAOLA Site Coordinator Big Spring School District The Challenge School districts in Pennsylvania were facing two challenges. First, many districts did not have the resources to provide students with online learning programs. With no option in the district, increasing numbers of students were leaving to attend virtual charter or other non-district schools. Secondly, small districts were struggling to provide expanded course selections for their students. Courses, such as AP courses and foreign languages like Chinese, were not available due to lack of means to hire teachers for these specific topics. Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) wanted to help its member districts address these challenges. They sought to redesign their high school offerings to increase learning options for high school students through online learning. The Solution CAIU established the Capital Area Online Learning Association (CAOLA) in 2009 to provide flexible online learning options to its member districts. Partnering with EdisonLearning, they expanded their high school offerings through EdisonLearning’s eCourses. CAOLA was also able to offer a full-time online high school program through EdisonLearning’s eAcademy. © 2010 EdisonLearning, Inc. All rights reserved 44

  8. + the Research Center… NEXT SLIDE….
  9. Research Center To further engage students with their course work, the highly interactive Research Center offers a true-to-life learning environment for students, teachers and advisors, and administrators. The various activities and features of the Research Center are based on a virtual world where students travel through different chat room environments. Navigating through buildings, rooms, fl oors and doors, students, as their own custom “avatars,” tour a virtual world of content interacting with each other and their instructors along the way. Students can see other avatars in a room as they enter and live chat. They can also keep a “friends” list - as they would on other social networks. The heightened engagement that results from use of these dynamic features aids in skill acquisition and the collaborative environment encourages students to help each other with coursework.
  10. Students can… Enjoy the Arcade when interventions are completed. Collaborate with students and teachers in the Learning Lab. Share art and creative works in the Art Gallery. Teachers/Advisors can assess student activity, attendance, log-in duration and content accessed, communicate with students and parents, manage grades and generate custom reports. Parents can monitor academic progress, grades, attendance, and course work, and communicate with instructors. Administrators can set up and administer courses and scheduling, enrollment and registration, materials fulfillment, and transcripts, as well as generate state and other essential reporting.
  12. Instructional Tools provide users with real time information on progress towards achievement goals, and the means to deliver interventions for students who need them. In addition, this toolset fosters the creation of a community that engages students, teachers and advisors, parents and administrators… all key individuals in the drive for student success.
