2. This Resource Kit
• This resource kit is going to be
broken into 4 sections
• History
• Geography/Community
• Economics
• Public Discourse, Decision Making,
And Citizen Involvement
• (At the very end are some helpful
contacts from the city of Rochester)
3. Resource Kit Continued
• The title of each slide will be a grade level content expectation for second
grade and below it will be a…
• small fact
• why it matters
• a link to an interactive website
• Or a picture… just to make life easier as a second grade teacher.
4.
5. 2 – H2.0.1 Demonstrate chronological thinking by distinguishing among years
and decades using a timeline of local community events.
ine/ (This is an online game
where students have to
organize events throughout
history on a time line.)
6. 2 – H2.0.2 Explain why descriptions of the same event in the local community
can be different.
• Everyone has a different perspective and because of this when a story is told
from the eyes of one person it may be told in a different light then in the
eyes of another
7. 2 – H2.0.3 Use an example to describe the
role of the individual in creating history.
mlk/games/wordsearch/ (This is a word
search that has important words relating to
the Martin Luther King Jr. Era, I’m
advocating multimodal literacy/social
studies)
cial_studies_games/ben-
franklin/franklin_true_false.html (true or
false game about Benjamin Franklin)
8. 2 – H2.0.4 Describe changes in the local community over time (e.g., types of
businesses, architecture and landscape, jobs, transportation, population).
• Over time everything changes
from the way businesses are run
down to the people that run
them, in the picture below it
shows multiple differences in
how lifestyle from technology to
apparel.
9. 2 – H2.0.5 Identify a problem in a community’s past and describe how it was
resolved.
• Pollution can be a constant problem in communities and in the past we didn’t
have the resources to fix those problems but now we do. In the game below
students can click and test what they think might have an effect on the
environment.
10. 2 – H2.0.6 Construct a historical narrative about the history of the local
community from a variety of
sources (e.g., data gathered from local residents, artifacts, photographs)
• Citizens of Rochester can use this
site to discover the origin of their
city.
http://www.downtownrochestermi.
com/dda/our-history/
11.
12. 2 – G1.0.1 Construct maps of the local community that contain symbols,
labels, and legends denoting human and natural characteristics of place.
• It is very important for
students to be able to
read a map, so below is
a legend that they can
use when constructing
their own maps.
13. 2 – G1.0.2 Use maps to describe the spatial organization of the local
community by applying concepts including relative location and using distance,
direction, and scale
• On this website students can teach
themselves all kinds of ways to use a map the
site teaches about scaling, how to read a map,
longitude, latitude and much more.
http://www.uen.org/3-
6interactives/social_studies.shtml
• On this website you match countries to
names
http://www.abcya.com/world_geography_m
aps.htm
14. 2 – G1.0.2 Use maps to describe the spatial organization of the local
community by applying concepts including relative location and using distance,
direction, and scale (Continued.)
(This says math game but it makes kids think using the cardinal directions.)
• http://www.nps.gov/webrangers/activities/mapmatch/?id=15 (This activity
teaches students all about maps.)
• http://www.history.com/games/puzzles/place-state/play (Place a state,
helps people to identify where all of the 50 states are)
15. 2 – G2.0.1 Compare the physical and human characteristics of the local
community with those of another community.
• In Michigan we have a lot of large
bodies of water and to adapt to this
we have built a lot of bridges, docks
and lighthouses, these are known as
human characteristics. In areas like
New York the most noticeable
human characteristics are the
cities/large building and monuments
like the statue of liberty
16. 2 – G2.0.2 Describe how the local community is part of a larger region (e.g.,
county, metropolitan area, state).
• The local community you are a part of like
other communities is part of something
much bigger, there are cities which are
bigger then communities, counties that are
bigger then cities, states that are bigger
then counties and countries that are bigger
than states.
medecision/ (Supreme Court game)
ft/ (Law Craft… this one is interesting you
get to pick a state to represent, your
political party and your political views)
17. 2 – G4.0.1 Describe land use in the community (e.g., where people live, where
services are provided, where products are made).
• In a community land is divided in multiple ways, some is given to
residents/business owners, some is kept by the government, and
some is used to collect resources. For people to buy goods and
services they would have to go to a store facility that is on land that
is owned by someone else. The person that is selling that good or
service may have needed to get their resources from someone else
on land that is used for collecting resources, in a way we are all
connected.
• https://www.brainpop.com/games/citizenscience/ (In this game
you convince people of dangers in the community… it also
involves time travel)
18. 2 – G4.0.2 Describe the means people create for moving people, goods, and
ideas within the local community.
• People can transport themselves and goods in a number
of ways. If they are being moved throughout a local
community flight is probably unnecessary, so it is most
likely that goods and people will travel by car but they can
also be carried by boats, trains and even animals.
• https://www.cia.gov/kids-page/games/world-
exploration/index.html (This game you play as a spy and
answer questions as you travel around the world… it says
it is for 3rd graders and up but I can recommend it to 2nd
graders that need more of a challenge.)
19. 2 – G4.0.3 Use components of culture (e.g., foods, language, religion,
traditions) to describe diversity in the local community.
• The United States is known as a melting pot because we have so many
cultures
20.
21. 2 – E1.0.1 Identify the
opportunity cost
involved in a consumer
decision.
• The picture to
the right explains
how opportunity
cost effects what
we buy.
22. 2–E1.0.2 Identify businesses in the local community.
• The game below lets a student play as a person in the community and work at local
businesses around town to make money
http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/games/moneymetropolis/
• http://www.funny-games.biz/shopping-street.html (This game lets students place
down businesses at the opportunity cost of their money if the person chooses to
spend too much money on opening businesses they might not meet their economic
goal.)
• http://www.schooltimegames.com/Social_Studies/Coffee_Tycoon.html (In this
game you own a coffee shop and you have to work to make the most of your
money, good economics lesson.)
23. 2–E1.0.3 Describe how businesses in the local community meet economic
wants of consumers.
• The cartoon to the right shows that
people that run local businesses are
trying to meet the needs of the
community
• http://pbskids.org/itsmylife/games
/mad_money_flash.html (In this
game you go all around town buying
things that you need for home.)
24. 2–E1.0.4 Describe the natural, human, and capital resources needed for
production of a good or service in a community.
• If a customer wants to purchase a good or service there are a few things that
need to be considered, who are they going to get the good or service from,
what is required to produce the good or service and what is that person
going to want in exchange.
25. 2–E1.0.5 Use examples to show that people cannot produce everything they
want (specialization) and depend on trade with others to meet their wants.
• A person cannot produce everything
that they want because generally
people specialize in one thing and they
can trade with others to get what they
want. An example of this would be if
a person is really good at making
cloths but not at growing food they
can trade with someone who is really
good at growing food and bad at
making cloths and they will both be
able to have what they need.
26.
27. 2 – P3.1.1 Identify public issues in the local community that influence the daily
lives of its citizens.
• There are many possible things
that could affect the lives of
citizens in a community, like if a
government was not properly
taking care of waste, if people are
not provided proper health care,
education or if law enforcement
does not do its job… if any of
these things are not being done
correctly then there can be a lot of
issues in the community.
28. 2 – P4.2.1 Develop and implement an action plan to address or inform others
about a public issue.
• If a person is passionate about a public issue they can bring it to the attention of
the person that represents them and if that is not working a person can tell a
journalist about their story because it is the job of journalists to make sure that the
public is aware of what kinds of issues are going around them.
(http://pbskids.org/newsflashfive/scoop/index.html Interactive news website.)
29. 2 – P4.2.2 Participate in projects to help or inform others.
• To inform others teachers can teach
students about peaceful protest and
other possible ways to get messages
across. Teachers can also tell
students about how they have
freedom of speech, which means
they are allowed to voice their
opinions as long as it isn’t going to
cause harm or endanger others.
