Project Description: You know that the first step in this project was to obtain approval from the board, but first the proposal would have to be finalized including a budget and risk management concerns. Once the board approved the proposal, selecting a component supplier and ordering the drilling equipment could commence. Hiring a certified drilling supervisor and recruitment of the volunteer team could also be initiated upon board approval. Once a component supplier is selected, the well components could be ordered which will then be packaged along with the drilling equipment to be jointly transported to Africa. After the shipment arrives in Africa, another non-profit organization will coordinate the assembly of the well components and test the drilling equipment to ensure everything is ready to go. After this, the partnering organization would also coordinate transporting the assembled well components to the planned well sites. After the volunteer team’s recruitment is complete, the certified drilling supervisor would train the volunteers just prior to travelling together to Africa. Only after the volunteers have arrived and the assembled components have been transported to the planned well sites could the drilling of 100 water wells commence. Rather than shipping the drilling equipment back to Canada, the organization plans to transfer the equipment to a local non-profit organization after the 100 wells have been drilled. Only after all the above activities were completed could the volunteer team travel back and the project audit report be started. In addition to charitable organization financial reporting requirements, the organization plans to document the lessons learned from the project into a formal project audit report as they are interested in conducting similar projects in the future. In preparation for the upcoming board meeting, you have researched the required activities and determined an estimated cost for each activity along with the activity’s estimated completion time. The list also includes estimated crash costs and crash times, in the event it would be necessary to accelerate a specific activity.

How can having access to safe drinking water enable personal and economic development for the
people of Africa?
Having access to safe drinking water gives communities and individuals the opportunity for both
personal and economic development. In particular African woman are at a disadvantage because of the
scarcity of clean drinking water. In a lot of African cultures woman are the collectors and managers of
water. This leaves woman only worrying about finding and carrying water when they could be working
or in school. Giving these woman access to clean and easily available water allows them to contribute
more time to employment, school and personal endeavors.
African people in poverty are directly correlated to the access of sanitary drinking water. Without direct
accessibility to clean drinking water, getting out of poverty is nearly impossible. The direct effects of the
lack of access include education, employment, health, agriculture and industrial development. With our
development of one hundred water wells, we can directly effect the economic and personal
development for people in Africa.
Approximately how many people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water?
There are over eight hundred million people in the world who do not have the proper access to safe
drinking water. That means more than one in eight people on the planet are drinking unsanitary water
that makes them ill. According to “The Water Project”, a non-profit organization that helps relief
communities of unsafe drinking water, one out of five deaths of children under the age of five are
related to poor water and sanitation. On top of that, “The Water Project” states, nearly eighty percent
of illness in developing countries is related to deprived water and sanitary conditions.

4. Task #9 Complete Project by August 29th, 2013
For the project to be finished by August 29th, 2013, the project will have to be crashed by
fourteen weeks. The fourteen weeks of crashing will cost an additional $135,000, making the
total project cost $387,000. The project can be completed by August 29 th, 2013 for the board to
use for their fall donation campaign.
Task #10 Activity Delay
Due to the effects of the complications with selecting a component supplier, the project duration was
extended from 44 weeks to 46 weeks. In order to complete the project in the original time frame of 44
weeks, an activity must be crashed to reduce the total amount of weeks for project completion. To
minimize the cost of reducing the amount of time for project completion, it is important to crash an
activity with a low cost of crashing. For this situation, Activity 1 (Finalizing Proposal) was chosen.
Activity 1 was chosen as the activity to crash because it was the least expensive to crash for two weeks,
which is the number of weeks needed to reduce the project completion time to 44 weeks. The total
cost of crashing Activity 1 for 2 weeks is $4,000.
