3. DEFINITION;
Rheumatoid arthritis commonly
abbreviated as RA ,is an auto immune
disorder that causes inflammation.
While Gouty arthritis is a form of acute
arthritis that has a known cause , the build
up crystalline uric acid deposits in the
joints and blood.
4. DIFFERENCES
RA and GOUTY can be very painful disorders ,but gouts
tend to be more treatable and has a better prognosis in most
cases.
RA usually causes pain or stiffness lasting for more than 30
minutes in the morning or after a long rest and lack of
activity , while stiffness due to GOUTY is present only at
the time of attack.
RA is associated with symmetrical swelling ,ex. Both hands,
both elbows, whereas GOUTY either involves a single joint
or involves the joints in an asymmetric pattern
5. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
RA symptoms include joint pain, swelling , tenderness, and
redness of the joints: prolonged morning stiffness and less
range of movement.
On the other hand, the patient having GOUT suddenly
experiences a hot red swollen joint, caused by the formation
of uric acid and crystals between the joints
In GOUT although the pain and swelling disappear with
treatment, it almost always returns in the same joint or in
another one, whereas RA is a continuous and progressive
disease with no remissions
6. LOCATION OF THE JOINTS
INVOLVE;
RA inflammation generally occurs in the
knuckles, and at the joints closest to your
hands, nearer the base of your fingers,
On the other hand GOUT usually affects
the joints in the big toe.
7. CAUSES
The Medical Community doesn’t yet
know what causes RA,
While GOUT is associated of
consuming rich food, obesity, drinking
too much alcohol.
8. RHEUMATOID AND GOUTY ARTHRITIS;
May look and feel the same, but
they have different causes and
tendencies.
9. HOW TO AVOID?
Excess weight stresses the joints of the
hips, knees, ankles, and feet and can make
RA worst.
Its always smart to keep your body weight
under control by eating a balanced, healthy
diet and limiting your alcohol consumption
and your chances of acquiring GOUTY.
