Solar Power
• Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into
electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV),
or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP).
Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or
mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of
sunlight into a small beam.
• Solar Power is the best renewable resource of all the
other energy resources
How does Solar Energy Work
Solar Energy Panels / What is a Solar Panel?
•Solar panels are devices that convert light to
electricity. These devices are most often referred to as solar
panels since sunlight is usually the source of light used to
power these devices.
•Solar panels are arrays composed of multiple solar cells. The
amount of energy that individual solar cells trap and generate
may be miniscule but when used to make up the arrays called
solar panels their combined energy can be immense.
Govt. of India’s Mission to Promote Solar Power
The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission was launched on the
11th January, 2010 by our former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
“The importance of this Mission is not just limited to providing
large-scale grid connected power. It has the potential to provide
significant multipliers in our efforts for transformation of India's
rural economy. Already, in its decentralized and distributed
applications, solar energy is beginning to light the lives of tens of
millions of India's energy-poor citizens. The rapid spread of solar
lighting systems, solar water pumps and other solar power-based
rural applications can change the face of India's rural economy.
We intend to significantly expand such applications through this
Mission. As a result, the movement for decentralized and
disbursed industrialization will acquire an added momentum, a
momentum which has not been seen before.”

Advantages of Solar Energy
1. The abundance of Solar Energy.
Even in the middle of winter each square meter of land still
receives a fair amount of solar radiation. Sunlight is
everywhere and the resource is practically inexhaustible.
Even during cloudy days we still receive some sunlight and
it is this that can be used as a renewable resource.
2. You don’t pay for sunlight.
Sunlight is totally free. There is of course the initial
investment for the equipment. After the initial capital
outlay you won’t be receiving a bill every month for the
rest of your life from the electric utility.
• 3. Solar energy is non-polluting.
Solar energy is an excellent alternative for fossil fuels
like coal and petroleum because solar energy is
practically emission free while generating electricity.
With solar energy the danger of further damage to the
environment is minimized. The generation of electricity
through solar power produces no noise. So noise
pollution is also reduced.
• 4. Accessibility of solar power in remote locations.
Solar power can generate electricity no matter how
remote the area as long as the sun shines there. Even in
areas that are inaccessible to power cables solar power
can produce electricity.

Solar Energy Resources State wise
World’s 1st 100% Solar Airport in INDIA
•The airport’s parent company, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL),
plans to sell surplus energy from the new solar plant to the Kerala State
Electricity Board. CIAL has also said that it is looking to continue exploring
alternate energy resources, taking advantage of the numerous water bodies in
Kerala through dam-based solar panels and other hydro power projects.
•India already has 4 gigawatts of solar capacity, and the Indian government
has begun directing other airports around the country to start incorporating
solar energy into their daily operations. The new international terminal at the
Cochin airport will be operational in May 2016.
Some of the Milestones Achieved in Solar
Energy
• California currently has the largest solar power plant in the
world covering 1000 acres are nine solar thermal plants in
Mojave Desert
• Gujarat holds the Record for the largest Solar park named as
CHARANKA SOLAR PARK of area 4900 Acres
• In terms of all renewable energy, currently India is ranked
fifth in the world with 15,691.4 MW grid-connected and
367.9 MW off-grid renewable energy based power capacity.
India is among top 5 destinations worldwide for solar
energy development
