Dear Friends
The readings this week are among my favorite in all of
scripture. The story of Abraham arguing with God truly
gives us a way of relating to God which is so natural. He
prays without fear of God. He knows that God is loving
and he reminds God of his goodness; he barters with God
reminding God of His nature. The readings remind us that
we are called to pray for others, and to assert our need
with God.
In the Gospel, Jesus also teaches us how to pray, by first
praising God, and then asking for God for our need. And
this is important. Often we ask God for our wants, and
then are dejected because we believe that God is not
answering our request. We can ask God for our ‘wants’
and our God may want to respond to them, but God, who
is a God of love, will give us everything we need for our
salvation. Just as a parent provides for the needs of a
child, and at times even their wants.
The dogma of our faith is that Jesus died for our salvation,
for our immortal dwelling with God in heaven. The prayer
of Abraham assures us of this—as God was willing to spare
a whole City for the sake of ten good people. Ten is an
important number within Judaism, because ten people
were needed to pray. This isn’t true of Catholicism, we say
“where two or three are gathered Christi is among us.”
The Apostle tells us we are called to “bring to completion”
the word of God for the world. This is the crucial aspect of
prayer, that through prayer we bring to completion what
God has begun through His saving action. The Apostle
reminds us that “in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking
in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is
the church”.
Last week we heard about being a welcoming people. This
week we learn that part of our welcoming attitude is to
pray for others so that they can be aware of God’s action
in their lives.
More importantly what our prayer reminds us is that we
are all children of God, that God is our Father who wants
to do for us, to give us our daily needs. We also pray that
we may forgive those who have hurt us, because we know
that God forgives us. Being a welcoming people means
praying for and forgiving those around us.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Coordinator Homebound Eucharist Ministry
This ministry brings communion
and prayer to people who
cannot get to mass. PAX
CHRISTI has primary
responsibility for Catholics at
the Sayre Village complex and
Morning Point. We also have a few parishioners
because of illness who cannot come to mass.
The ministry team includes ten to twelve people, so you
only need to be available once monthly—however, you
can go more often.
Currently the ministry team is looking for a coordinator
to schedule ministers, and to inform Fr. Nick weekly by
email of the activities of the ministry. If you are
interested in coordinating the ministry, please see Carol
Yang, or call Fr. Nick. Thank you.
Health Ministry
The Health Ministry team
is reconstituting itself.
The team sponsors the
twice annual Blood
Mobile Drive, and assures
that the First Aide kits,
and emergency equipment at PAX CHRISTI is current. If
you are interested in helping with the Health Ministry
Committee, please contact Jonathan Drake or call Fr.
Nick. Thank you.
Welcoming Committee
We are searching for
someone who is willing to
chair and coordinate a
Welcoming Committee.
The purpose of the
committee is to engage
parishioners and visitors who come to mass on the
weekends. The committee has the following
component parts:
• Someone to cover a welcoming table at each
mass
• Individuals to serve as greeters and ushers, to
assist people find a seat and to collect the Offertory at
mass. These individuals are also responsible for
straightening out the books and bulletin after each
mass.
The person who coordinates this committee will be
responsible for scheduling coverage at the Welcome
Table, and six individuals to serve as greeters/ushers,
etc. at each weekend mass.
If this is something you may be interested in, or if you
believe this is necessary for our church, you are invited
to contact Father Nick at npagano@cdlex.org or by
phone 859-351-7825 to help pull together this ministry.

the major reason adults leave the church is no one misses them, and one of the reasons children when they leave the
home leave the church is that they do not see that belief in God and membership in a church meant anything to their
parents. Your participation in any of these ministries is not only an opportunity to serve the community, it is an

STEWARDSHIP MINUTE
“Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock
and the door will be opened to you.” Luke 11:9
Jesus assures us that if we ask Him, God will take care
of what we need. The problem is that in our culture we
often confuse what we really need with what we simply
want. Many people need very little. However, we
usually want so much more. A good steward only asks
God for what he needs.
If you are going into the hospital or are in the hospital, you
need to notify us so that a priest or deacon can visit you.
Federal Privacy regulations prevent the hospital from
notifying the church. You or a member of your family must let
the church know if someone is hospitalized or placed into a
nursing facility, so that we can pray for them and visit them.

Kentucky church leaders will be coming together October
24th (noon) – 25th (2:30) at Kentucky Dam Village Park for
the 2013 annual event of the Kentucky Council of Churches.
It is not necessary to be a delegate; all interested persons are
welcome. We will explore Civil Dialogue through the biblical
theme, "Instead, speak the truth in love" (Eph. 4:15). Keynote
speakers will be Ms. Renee Shaw of Kentucky Educational
Television, and Dr. Kathryn Johnson of Louisville
Presbyterian Seminary. There will also be workshops and

Music News…
As Catholics, we are blessed with a liturgy that offers many
opportunities to lift our voices in giving praise and thanks to
God in spoken word and song. In an attempt to strengthen that
sense of community during Mass, we will be selecting hymns
throughout the year that will be repeated several weeks in a
row. You may have noticed this repetition already with our
opening hymn “Come, Now Is the Time to Worship.” I
strongly encourage each and every one of you to join us in
singing AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE during the entire Mass, as
we are all called to engage in fully conscious and active
participation, which does include singing (regardless of
ability). But please take a close look at the words to the hymn
below and join with us in answering its call as one parish
family, in the gift of song that God has blessed each and every
one of us with.
Come, now is the time to worship. Come, now is the time to
give your heart.
Come, just as you are to worship. Come, just as you are
before your God. Come.
One day every tongue will confess you are God. One day
every knee will bow.
Still the greatest treasure remains for those who gladly choose
you now.
