Rapunzel
Había una vez un matrimonio que vivía junto a la casa de la Maga Violenta.
La mujer estaba esperando un niño. Ella y su marido estaban muy contentos
al pensar en el hijo que iban a tener. La mujer solía asomarse a la ventana y
mirar hacia el jardín de la maga Violenta. Y un día, vio un hermoso plantel
de rapónchigos y se le antojó comer una ensalada. Le dijo a su marido: "En
el jardín de nuestra vecina hay unos rapónchigos hermosísimos. Si no puedo
cenar una ensalada hecha con esas plantas me moriré." "¡Pero no puedo
entrar en el jardín de la Maga Violenta! ¡Se pondría furiosa contra mí!". "¡Tú
verás lo que haces! ¡Yo me moriré si no puedo comer una ensalada de
rapónchigos!".
El pobre marido se quedó preocupadísimo. Y como quería mucho a su mujer
y estaba muy ilusionado con la llegada del hijo que esperaban, se arriesgó
a entrar en el jardín de la Maga. Cuando ya casi había terminado de
recoger rapónchigos, apareció la Maga Violenta: "¡Robando mis hortalizas!
¡Esto te va a costar caro! ¿No sabes que puedo castigarte de una manera
terrible?". "Oh, señora Maga, tenga usted piedad!". Y el buen hombre le
contó que su mujer esperaba un hijo y que había tenido el antojo de cenar
rapónchigos en ensalada.
La Maga escuchó atentamente lo que el hombre le decía y luego contestó:
"Bien, bien, vecino. Conque vais a tener un hijo, ¿eh? Te voy a proponer un
trato: yo dejaré que cojas de mi huerta tantos rapónchigos como tu mujer
quiera comer y tú me darás a tu hijo en cuanto nazca." El pobre hombre
estaba tan asustado que aceptó el trato. Su mujer comió ensalada de
rapónchigos todos los días.
Y sucedió que la mujer tuvounapreciosa niña. El mismo día de su nacimiento
se presentó la Maga Violenta. Tomó a la criatura, la envolvió en su mantón
y se la llevó a su casa. Y le puso por nombre Rapunzel, que quiere decir
rapónchigo. La cuidó durante muchos años y le dio una esmerada
educación. Cuando Rapunzel cumplió doce años se había convertido en
una bellísima jovencita. Para que nadie pudiera alejarla de su lado, la Maga

Violenta se la llevó a un bosque espesísimo. Construyó allí una torre muy alta
que no tenía puerta ni escalera; solamente tenía tenía una ventanita en la
parte más alta. Y allí encerró a la muchacha.
Cada día la maga Violenta venía a visitar a Rapunzel. Llegaba hasta el pie
de la torre y gritaba: "¡Rapunzel! ¡Rapunzel! ¡Échame tus trenzas!". Rapunzel
tenía un pelo espléndido y larguísimo. Echaba sus trenzas por la ventana y
la Maga Violenta trepaba por ellas hasta entrar dentro de la torre.
Un día, el hijo del Rey, que iba de cacería y se había extraviado, vio la
extraña torre. Se quedó mirandola un rato y tuvo ocasión de ver cómo la
Maga subía hasta lo alto por las trenzas de oro de Rapunzel. Le llenó de
curiosidad lo que había visto y todavía creció su interés cuando oyó una
dulce canción que sonaba allá en lo alto de la torre. El Príncipe consiguió
reunirse con sus compañeros, pero ya no pudo olvidar la extraña torre y la
hermosa voz que cantaba dentro de ella. Volvió otro día al pie de la torre y
buscó una entradapero no la halló y entonces se decidió a gritarla llamada
que había oído a la Maga. Dijo: "¡Rapunzel! ¡Rapunzel! ¡Échame tustrenzas!".
Al momento las trenzas colgaron desde la ventana hasta el alcance de sus
manos. El Príncipe trepó por ellas. Al principio, Rapunzel se quedó muy
asustada cuando vio al Príncipe ante ella; pero el hijo del Rey supo hablarle
con palabras tan amables que consiguió tranquilizarla.
El Príncipe y Rapunzel se hicieron muy amigos. El venía a verla todos los días,
cuando sabía que la Maga Violenta no estaba con ella. Entre los dos
planearon una estratagema para que Rapunzel pudiera escapar de su
encierro y marchar a palacio para casarse con el Príncipe. "Tráeme cada
día que vengas a verme una madeja de hebras de seda -pidió Rapunzel-.
Yo tejeré con ellas una escala y así un día podré descender de la torre y
montar en tu caballo para irme contigo." Y Rapunzel comenzó a tejer la
escala. La Maga Violenta no sabía nada de este trabajo porque no podía
sospechar ni remotamente lo que estaba ocurriendo.

Pero un día, cuando la Maga acababa de subir a la torre, Rapunzel
comentó: "El Príncipe sube muchísimo más deprisa que vos." "¡Ah, pícara!
¿Qué es esto que oigo? ¡Así que has estado engañándome todo este
tiempo! ¿eh? Yo creía que te tenía bien guardada y tú estabas recibiendo
al Príncipe. Bien todavía es tiempo de cortar por lo sano." Tomó unas tijeras
y cortó las hermosas trenzas de Rapunzel. Luego la agarró de la mano y, por

"¡Rapunzel! ¡Rapunzel! ¡Échame tus trenzas!". La Maga echó las trenzas por
la ventanita y el joven trepó por ellas. Cuando llegó arriba, en vez de la
hermosa cara de Rapunzel, vio la fea cara de la Maga. "Has venido a ver a
tunovia, ¿verdad? ¡Pues no la encontrarásnunca! ¡Fuera de aquí!". La Maga
empujó al Príncipe, que cayó desde lo alto de la torre sobre unos matorrales

desgraciado de los mortales.
Y un día, en que ya estaba a punto de morir de hambre y de tristeza, oyó
una dulce voz que cantaba. La reconoció en seguida y fue siguiendo la
dirección que le indicaba el sonido de la triste canción. Cuando estuvo
bastante cerca gritó: "¡Rapunzel! ¡Rapunzel! ¡Ven en mi ayuda!". Y la
muchacha salió a su encuentro. Al verle en aquella mísera condición,
Rapunzel lloró apenada. Sus lágrimas cayeron sobre los ojos del Príncipe que,
al instante, quedaron sanos. Rapunzel y el Príncipe se casaron y fueron muy
felices. De la Maga Violenta no se volvió a saber nada, aunque algunos
aseguran que sigue criando hermosísimos rapónchigos en su huerta.
