Developing a systematic approach to seeking out and responding to feedback can provide us with the information we need to acquire eventually well-used resources. A library in which this kind of intentional communication style is prevalent can be called a “marketing-aware” organization. In this presentation we will discuss all the components of a marketing cycle for electronic resources, with a special focus on the patron. We’ll discuss how to build a marketing team, ways of knowing your patrons, and hear real-world examples of recent projects that were designed to learn about a user group.

Since the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project first started tracking teen cell phone use, the age at which American teens acquire their first cell phone has consistently grown younger. In Pew Internet's 2004 survey of teens, 18% of 12-year-olds owned a cell phone. In 2009, 58% of 12 year-olds own a cell phone. We also have found that cell phone ownership increases dramatically with age: 83% of teens age 17 now own a cell phone, up from 64% in 2004.

Media Use, Face-to-Face Communication, Media Multitasking, and Social Well-Being Among 8- to 12-Year-Old Girls Roy Pea, Clifford Nass, Lyn Meheula, Marcus Rance, Aman Kumar, Holden Bamford, Matthew Nass, Aneesh Simha, Benjamin Stillerman, Steven Yang, and Michael Zhou Stanford University An online survey of 3,461 North American girls ages 8 –12 conducted in the summer of 2010 through Discovery Girls magazine examined the relationships between social well-being and young girls’ media use—including video, video games, music listening, reading/homework, e-mailing/posting on social media sites, texting/instant messaging, and talking on phones/video chatting—and face-to-face communication. This study introduced both a more granular measure of media multitasking and a new comparative measure of media use versus time spent in face-to-face communication. Regression analyses indicated that negative social well-being was positively associated with levels of uses of media that are centrally about interpersonal interaction (e.g., phone, online communication) as well as uses of media that are not (e.g., video, music, and reading). Video use was particularly strongly associated with negative social well-being indicators. Media multitasking was also associated with negative social indicators. Conversely, face-to-face communication was strongly associated with positive social well-being. Cell phone ownership and having a television or computer in one’s room had little direct association with children’s socioemotional well-being. We hypothesize possible causes for these relationships, call for research designs to address causality, and outline possible implications of such findings for the social well-being of younger adolescents. Keywords: late childhood, social well-being, media, multitasking, computers Extensive research has addressed social developmental processes and outcomes and the many effects of media use (primarily TV) on cognitive development (e.g., Calvert & Wilson, 2008; Parke & Clarke-Stewart, 2010; Pecora, Murray, & Wartella, 2007). Yet the intersections of social well-being and media use patterns in the current era of multiscreen media multitasking (with TVs, computers, and mobile devices) have not been examined. Another key omission has been the failure to assess time spent in face-to- face communication in studies of the relationships of media use on social development. This oversight is important given the shift from face-to-face communication to mediated interpersonal communication, even among children (Rideout, Foehr, & Roberts, 2010). This study examined this important set of relationships in a large-scale survey on traditional and new media use and face-to- face communication and social well-being indices in girls 8 to 12 years old. Rich Ling1 and Gitte Stald2 Abstract A central issue in the adoption and use of information and communication tech nology is the degree to which it either contributes to or detracts from the dev elopment of social cohesion in the small group. When considering this question, one need recognize that the social dynamics of the mobile telephone are different from those of the Internet. The device affords pointtopoint interaction that makes us individually addressable regardless of where we or our interlocutors may be. This analysis draws on survey material from Scandinavia. It is based on a random sample of approximately 1,800 persons in Norway surveyed in December 2007 and January 2008. The data were collected with a Webbased survey of a known population, as supplemented with telephone interviews to cover those who traditionally do not use the Web (generally, persons older than 50 years of age). Data from two surveys of 15 to 24yearold Danes were included: one from 2004 (343 respondents) and one from 2006 (629 respondents). Research reported here, and by others, has found that the mobile telephone contributes to the development and maintenance of social cohesion within the closest sphere of friends and family. If community is construed to be more restricted and a result of this type of cohesion, then it is different in character than that used when discussing netbased networking. There is clearly an interest in this issue. Aside from thinking about strong personal ties vis-à-vis mediation, there has been extensive work on this issue in the broader social context. McPherson and colleagues (McPherson, Smith-Lovin, & Brashears, 2006), for example, have examined the dynamics of the peoples’ closest ties during the past two decades. Their interest in this area is based on the idea that close contacts with others are important because they provide for broad-based support in both mundane affairs and times of crisis. Lee Rainie, director of Internet, Science and Technology research at the Pew Research Center, discussed his group’s latest findings about the role of libraries and librarians on April 3 at Innovative Users Group conference. The latest work shows that many people struggle to find the most trustworthy information and they express a clear hope that librarians can help them. He explored recent research about how people are becoming “lifelong learners” and that library services are an element of how they hope to stay relevant in their jobs, as well as find ways to enrich their lives. He drew on Pew Research Center studies about the information and media sources people use and how they decide what to trust.
