Glaucus et scylla

  1. 1. Glaucus et Scylla A Fabula Sprevit Amoris
  2. 2. Olim illic eram a piscator...

Glaucus was a young man, a fisherman, and one day, after a long day of fishing, Glaucus placed his catches onto the ground. Much to his surprise, the fish - some having been dead for hours, began to revive and "run" back to the ocean and swim away. For a minute Glaucus thought he was insane and seeing things, but then he looked closer at the spot where he'd emptied his nets. There were some strange looking herbs on that particular spot, Glaucus leaned over and picked some up and ate it.

  3. 3. SUBITO!!!!!

Immediately, a change came over Glaucus, he had a great urge to run and jump into the water. As he touched the salty water his stringy blond hair turned as green as seaweed, his already broad shoulders grew broader still, and his legs grew scales and turned into a tail. This was all very confusing, but the Gods seemed to accept it as a weird occurrence, and made Glaucus a sea-god. He lived happily in the water for a time, flirting with nymphs and racing fish, just having a good time living his life, until one day he met Scylla.

  4. 4. Scylla, te Amo...

Glaucus saw the beautiful maiden Scylla, the favorite of the water-nymphs, walking on the shore, Glaucus immediately fell in love with her.

Glaucus, partly emerging from the water, and supporting himself against a rock, said, "Maiden, I am no monster, nor a sea-animal, but a god; and neither Proteus nor Triton ranks higher than I. Once I was a mortal, and followed the sea for a living; but now I belong wholly to it." Then he told the story of his metamorphosis.

  5. 5. Glaucus, te non amo, tamen

Despite Glaucus' profession of love, however, Scylla did not return his feelings for her. Upon telling her about his metamorphosis into a sea god and his infatuation with her, Scylla turned from him and sped away. Disheartened by this response, Glaucus thought and thought about some way he could win her over.

  6. 6. Circe, veneficus

Soon Glaucus came up with an idea: To consult the famed enchantress Circe about a love potion he could use to make Scylla return his love.

Circe herself, however, was attracted to the newly changed sea god, and implored Glaucus to choose someone else to love. Glaucus refused however, and so Circe was filled with menis .

  7. 7. Adversus Scyllae

So out of her frustration, Circe decided to put a curse upon Scylla. She concocted a potion using poisonous herbs, ventured to the part of Sicily where Scylla resided, and poured the contents of the potion into Scylla's usual bathing place. Upon her next cleansing, Scylla was transformed into a hideous monster with serpents and the heads of barking dogs in place of limbs.

  8. 8. Tristis, vehemens terminus

Scylla spent the rest of her days rooted in place, enraged at her new hideous form. To cope with the loneliness and rage, Scylla would attack and destroy the ships of passing sailors, including those of Ulysses and Aeneas. Eventually Scylla turned to rock, terrifying passing mariners ever since.
