Thus far, we have defined the subject of the project in techno-economic
terms. However, one of the objectives of the project is to expand our
collective view of the decarbonisation challenge beyond techno-economics in
an integrated framework using the PESTLE framework.
Whilst there are many examples of non-techno-economic analysis of
decarbonisation, these tend to remain in separate conversations (CivilSociety
Engagement), with little linkage to how they could fit together with the
techno-economic views.
This ‘layer’ considers each of the PESTLE dimensions separately and equally.
Responding to this objective is a challenge, not least because of the
dominance of the techno-economic knowledge base, including the author
team’s grounding in this perspective.
We have therefore managed to gather a lot more information in the techno-
economic dimension than the others.This means that the political, social,
environmental, legal aspects are significantly less elaborated than the techno-
economic. We see this as an invitation and research agenda!
