24. BECAUSE..ABRUZZO IS FULL OF
HISTORY
Humans have inhabited Abruzzo since Neolithic times. A
skeleton from Lama dei Peligni in the province of Chieti has been
radiometrically dated to 6,540 b. c.
The Warrior Capistrano is an "icon" symbol of Abruzzo
and its identity. The sculpture, dating from the mid-sixth
century. BC, is a male figure with arms folded on his chest, in
military costume, but in reality is a funerary statue of a warrior
prince, placed on top of the mound of earth placed over the grave.
The discovery was fortuitous in 1934 in the village of Capistrano
(Aq), during the work of tilling of land. The statue, carved
from a single block of stone, has a grandeur out of the
ordinary: it is more than two meters high to the base of
nearly half a meter in height and width of the shoulders is
nearly 135 cm.

the ancient territory of Vestines,
along the banks of the river

a monumental archaeological site
of great historical importance as it
was used as a burial place for
nearly a millennium.
The mounds excavated cover an
area of about 2,000 square
meters and have different
characteristics depending on
when they belong to. The oldest
tombs date back to the early Iron
Age (VIII-XI century BC), while the
most recent to the end of the
Roman-Hellenistic period.Necropolis di Fossa. Prehistoric
