Title of Your Paper
Start your paper here. Each paragraph should be indented to the 0.5 mark on the ruler.
Your lines should be double-spaced as you see here. Type without hitting “enter” so that the text
wraps naturally from line to line. This first paragraph is your introduction. It tells the reader what
your paper will cover. It gives the reader some essential key points that serve as guideposts
throughout the paper. Your last sentence of your opening paragraph should start with “This paper
will discuss…” and then complete the sentence.
Make sure that each paragraph has a main idea. After your main idea, offer supporting
evidence from the sources you have read. After you have offered supporting evidence, complete
the paragraph by offering analysis, if needed. Always cite your sources. You should have at least
one source per paragraph, because every paragraph must include detailed, factual, specific
information. Cite your sources in-text, like this (Author last name, year).
Make sure that you are not including opinion. An academic research paper is about the
research you have conducted or read. Thus, you should not start writing a paper until you have
read the research and taken notes on it in your own words. As you take notes, cite the source of
those notes. Then organize your notes into an outline that will help you build your paper.
Headings
Be sure to use headings. These guide the reader through your paper. Headings tell your
reader what the next section will cover. A section should be more than one paragraph.
Conclusion
Be sure that you have a conclusion. This should highlight the main points of your paper,
remind the reader of your thesis statement, and explain how you have analyzed the issue.
