2. Barriers to effective communication in
classroom
Teachers have an increasingly difficult job trying to communicate
effectively to classrooms that are growing in size and may contain
students who come from varied backgrounds. Some common
barriers to effective communication in the classroom are listening
barriers, perception barriers, oral barriers and cultural barriers.
Learning to recognize and overcome these barriers is essential in
effective classroom communication.
3. Listening Barriers
Effective listening is one of the most important factors in classroom
communication. Take the time to listen to what the other person is saying.
When someone is speaking , you should not be thinking of your next response.
Negative emotions may occur when certain words or body language is used. A
teacher must also take care to keep emotional reaction to minimum and focus
on what the speaker is saying. Outside the noise such as telephone, email, or
construction noise can sometimes make listening difficulties. This outside noise
should be minimized in the classroom.
4. Perception Barriers
Perception may be a barrier to effective communication in the
classroom. Different people may receive and hear the same message
but interrupt it differently. Paying attention to detail is also
important. Important aspects can be missed by not covering subject
in depth. A teacher should also learn to focus on both positive and
negative aspects of conversation. By having a distorted focus, a
teacher may only focus on negative aspects of a conversation.
5. Oral Barriers
Communication barriers in the classroom may exit if oral communication is
not clear. Communication only occurs when the listener hears and understand
your message in the way you meant for it to be received. Some problems in oral
communication include using words with ambiguous meanings. The teacher
must make sure the student clearly understand the meaning of words. Another
problem oral communication is using generalization and stereotypes. Classroom
communication should be specific to the topic and without bias. A teacher
must also take caution not to make a premature conclusion before she has also
all the facts about the topic or situation.
6. Cultural Barriers
Cultural differences can be barrier to effective communication in
the classroom. It is possible for both a teacher and a student to have
predisposed ideas about behavior based on what the other person
culture is. Messages are often misunderstood if they are delivered in
a way that is unfamiliar to the student culture. It is important to
dispel assumptions or biases based on culture differences in a
classroom.

strategies

classroom.

communication
8. Strategies for active listening
The following strategies are intended to promote active listening or a type of listening with the
goal to develop clear understanding of the speakers concern and also to clearly communicate
the listeners interest.
• Stop- Focus on the other person, their thoughts and feelings. Consciously focus on quieting
your own internal commentary, and step away from your own concerns to think about those
of the speaker. Give your full attention to the speaker.
• Look- Pay attention to non verbal messages without letting yourself be distracted. Notice
body language and non-verbals cues to allow for a richer understanding of the speakers
point.
• Listen- listen for the essence of the speakers thoughts: detail, majour ideas and their
meanings.
9. Strategies for accurate perception
• Analyze your own perception- question your own perception, and think
about how they are formed. Check in with others around you regularly and
be aware of assumption that you are making. Seek additional information
and observation. You may just need to ask people if your perception are
accurate.
• Work on improving on your perception- increase your awareness of barriers
to perception and which ones you tend towards. Check in with yourself
regularly. Seek honest, constructive feedback from others regarding their
perception of you as a mean of increasing your self awareness.
