WHY CHILDREN WON’T TELL
feel powerless and not in
control
they don’t know
what to say or how
to say it
unaware they are
being abused
think won’t be believed
feel ashamed and
feel think it’s their
fault
made to feel
special through
bribes and gifts
people don’t listen
to them
adults sometimes
make excuses for
other adults’
behaviour
may have been
threatened and so
scared to tell
Why?
19
If a Child Tells you…..
React calmly and
• ensure the immediate safety of the child
• reassure the child and take what they say seriously
• don’t make promises not to tell
• keep questions to a minimum – use them to clarify what you have been told
• make a full record of what was said, seen or heard
• follow advice from your club s designated person and report your concerns on to the
designated person or direct to Children’s Services or the Police if you feel the child is in
danger or at risk
