3. When roadmaps have NOT worked
1. As a delivery/timeline promise.
2. Too much detail. Just a list of low level
features.
3. When we lose focus on what the
consumer needs.
4. We have hundreds of engineers working
in dozens of delivery teams all over the
world.
5. 1. Stakeholder Management –
keeping our leaders on the
same page
2. Multiple teams building into
the same experience –
keeping our delivery teams
on the same page
Two of our biggest challenges:
6. Where roadmaps have worked
1. Major re-platform initiatives
2. For most initiatives, we keep the
roadmap view short (90 day view)
3. And when the roadmap is
accompanied with a product vision
and opportunity & discovery backlog.
10. What are we currently experimenting with?
OKRs (Objectives & Key Results)

11. I encourage you to seek to
understand, with genuine
curiosity, the needs of anyone
who has a problem and thinks
that a roadmap is the solution.

Little bit about me.
Spoiler alert – we use roadmaps.
Managing expectations. Study where one group of participants waited for a train that was 5 minutes late but had no indication of when it would arrive. The second group waited for a train that was 10 minutes late but had a sign letting them know. The second group was significantly more satisfied with their experience that the first.
Smaller initiatives also rarely get done by one team in a silo. Multiple teams line up against common objectives.
