Why should academics publish? • Research/professional practice and publishing/output are part of what academics do alongside teaching, administration/management. – It’s traditionally part of what it means to be an academic. • Career opportunities and progression. – – – – Gets your name known Promotes networking in your field (collaboration). Helps in securing internal/external grant funding. Builds individual and institutional reputation (institutional support for individual research benefits the institution) – For the Research Excellence Framework (REF). • It helps you to: – Make a contribution to your field. – Stay up to date with your field. – Continue to learn in your field. • And not least it: – Contributes to curriculum design. – Enhances teaching and the student learning experience. • See: http://www.academiccareer.manchester.ac.uk/

Did this vision imply that each region would comprise one research intensive and one access (teaching?) focused institution?
