The Character of a TRUE Prophet

  1. 1. School of the Prophets
  2. 2. Hebrew nabi  “to bubble forth, as from a fountain; to utter”  proclaims a message received from God Hebrew ro’eh, hozeh  “a seer”  shares and interprets divine visions and insight Literally, one who speaks for another, especially, one who speaks for God and interprets His will to man; One who prophesies, or foretells events; a predictor; a foreteller; One inspired or instructed by God to speak in His name; One who utters a communication in speaking the heart and mind of God; A person who speaks by divine inspiration or as the interpreter through whom the will of a God is expressed; A "watchman" or "seer"; One who proclaims the divine will and counsel of God; A "mouthpiece" and "spokesman" for God; One able to hear the voice of God and bring His words to the world.
  3. 3. Character  the inherent complex of attributes that determines a person’s moral and ethical actions and reactions Personality  the complex of all the attributes--behavioral, temperamental, emotional and mental--that characterize a unique individual
  4. 4. Regardless of personality, a witch is still a witch! Good Personality Bad Personality
  5. 5. Personality is perceived; Character is discerned Character and personality are independent of one another Character influences personality God changes our character, and uses us DESPITE our personalities
  6. 6. How would you describe your own PERSONALITY? ▪ Shy, quiet, introverted ▪ Animated ▪ Organized and careful ▪ Adventurous ▪ Talkative What are your CHARACTER traits? ▪ Honest ▪ Trustworthy ▪ Nurturing ▪ Abusive ▪ Deceiving ▪ Loyal THOUGHTS TO PONDER: Does your personality correctly represent your character? Why or why not? The way others perceive you is judged by harmony, or the lack thereof, between the two.
  7. 7. How do others “perceive” you?
  8. 8. Impression is another person’s perception of your character, based on what you SHOW them  Personality  Appearance  Actions/Reactions  Communication  Moods
  9. 9. Should a prophet care about image and impression? Should a prophet consider what others think about him or her? Consider this… ▪ A first impression is formed within the initial 3-5 seconds ▪ The first impression is always the strongest ▪ 60% of language is non-verbal; First impressions are largely influenced by visual information (appearance, actions, attitude, etc.)
  10. 10. WHO DO YOU WORK FOR? YOU are the face of your company YOU are the voice of your company YOU are the voice of God For many, YOU are the face of God Prophet, what impression are you making?
  11. 11. “In the long run no man can have high visions and lead a low life.” --TC Gordon
  12. 12. All supernatural gifts are spiritually fed The fundamental differences between a prophet and a diviner (witch) are the spiritual source and authority A true prophet speaks ONLY as directed by the SPIRIT OF GOD – You must be sent! ▪ Samuel (1 Samuel 10:6) ▪ God’s Spirit rests in His prophets (Nehemiah 9:30) ▪ Those not sent are condemned (Jeremiah 29:8-10)
  13. 13. A prophet is God’s “instrument” in the earth An instrument only delivers what its master performs The fruit of disobedience is death  The Young Prophet (1 Kings 13)  Korah’s rise against Moses (Numbers 16) REMEMBER: Delivery is just as important as the message!
  14. 14. Can a prophet make a mistake? When a prophecy does not come to pass, is this a sign that the prophet is false? If a prophet speaks outside of the leading of God’s Spirit, will it still come to pass?
  15. 15. RELATIONSHIP is key! Worship and repentance frame the lifestyle of a true prophet “Covered” by God  Jeremiah (Jeremiah 15:19-21)
  16. 16. A prophet must operate in divine TIMING The gift of “wait” Words have seasons  Daniel 12:9  Isaiah 50:4, Luke 1:20 Remember Ezekiel  “Timed” assignment
  17. 17. Can GOD trust you? A prophet must ALWAYS stand for what is right and righteous Jeremiah is the picture of integrity  Jeremiah 28 ▪ Lack of intimidation ▪ Lack of “peer pressure” ▪ Disregard for personal gain ▪ Fear of God
  18. 18. Vanity is the greatest threat to prophetic ministry Power and authority are two different things! Prophets, always remember your source!  Psalm 75:6-7  Proverbs 27:1-2 A true prophet is NEVER self-appointed or self-acclaimed  Elymas (Acts 13)
  19. 19. Why are prophets consistently tempted with pride? In what ways is pride demonstrated through prophets who allow it to enter their spirits?
  20. 20. A prophet is called BY GOD, TO THE PEOPLE A prophet is a SERVANT of God A prophet must have the heart of God, which is a heart for His people  Jeremiah  God loves the people of the word (John 3:16) A true prophet has a heart for evangelism, often demonstrated inside the local church
  21. 21. Opposition follows the sent prophet of God  John 4:44  Jeremiah 12:5-6  Ezekiel  Hosea Called to the rebellious A true prophet knows how to FIGHT unto obedience
  22. 22. Prophets know, understand and respect ORDER and PROTOCOL Prophets are adaptable and malleable, though never compromising the message  1 Corinthians 9:19-21  Adjustment for a purpose The prophetic is PROACTIVE, not REACTIVE
  23. 23. Express only the heart, mind and will of God Personal feelings and opinions must never taint the word of the LORD  Micah 3:5-6  Ezekiel 13:1-3 No respect of persons  1 Samuel 3:11-18
  24. 24. “Expect misunderstanding. Expect persecution. Expect ridicule. Expect mistreatment. Expect suffering. Expect rejection. Then, you won’t be surprised when it comes.” ▪ Chip Brogden - Letter to a Reluctant Prophet Fear of man is not acceptable  Matthew 10:28 God protects the prophet  Psalm 105:12-15
  25. 25. A prophet is more often misunderstood than not “A prophet always stands in danger of being thought insane. He does not see what other men see. He has the strangest kind of intuitive grasp of things. It seems as if fresh from heaven he is astounded by the carnality of men. He gasps and cannot stand, wondering that no one cries out.” ▪ Art Katz - The Heart of a Prophet
  26. 26. A prophet must be continuously PROVEN The prophetic ministry is constantly tried and tested A prophet is not offended by questions of clarification Signs and wonders follow the ministry of the prophet “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen… and don’t try to be a prophet!”
  27. 27. Character is demonstrated through ownership and responsibility
  28. 28. Prayer Suffering Receiving from God Worship Encouragement Foretelling Direction and Guidance Proclaiming Correction and rebuke Warning Watching Challenging the Nation Initiating God’s Plans Healing Appointing and Anointing Advising Rulers Interpretation  Dreams, visions  Signs of the times
  29. 29. Individuals The Church The Nations
  30. 30. A prophet does not turn on and off – that’s the nature of a witch A prophet is 100% dependent on God and has no confidence in the flesh
  31. 31. Ezekiel and the Valley of Dry Bones Ezekiel 37:1-14

  • 1 Kings 13
     21And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
     22But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.
     23And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
     24And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.
     25And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
     26And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.
  • Jeremiah 15
     19Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.
     20And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
     21And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.
  • Daniel 12:9
     9And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

    Isaiah 50:4
     4The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

    Luke 1:20
     19And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
     20And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
     21And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

    Ezekiel’s instruction required patience and trust in God

    Ezekiel 4
     4Lie thou also upon thy left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it: according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon it thou shalt bear their iniquity.
     5For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel.

     8And, behold, I will lay bands upon thee, and thou shalt not turn thee from one side to another, till thou hast ended the days of thy siege.
     9Take thou also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentiles, and millet, and fitches, and put them in one vessel, and make thee bread thereof, according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon thy side, three hundred and ninety days shalt thou eat thereof.
     10And thy meat which thou shalt eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a day: from time to time shalt thou eat it.
  • Jeremiah 28
     14For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: and I have given him the beasts of the field also.
     15Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.
     16Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD.

    DO NOT be influenced by the expectations or others!
  • 1 Corinthians 13
     8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
     9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
     10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

    Luke 14:11
    11For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

    Psalm 75
     6For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
     7But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

    Self-promotion and self-exaltation are NOT of God

    Proverbs 27
     1Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
     2Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

    Acts 13
     6And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:
     7Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.
     8But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
     9Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.
     10And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
     11And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.
     12Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

  • Jeremiah 8:21-9:1
     21For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.
     22Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
     1Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

    1 Timothy 2
     3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
     4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

    REMEMBER the example of CHRIST:
    Compassion is followed by signs, wonders and miracles
    Multitude fed with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread
    Blind man healed
    Leper healed
    Demons cast out
    Sins forgiven
  • John 4  44For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

    Jeremiah 12
     5If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?
     6For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.

    Ezekiel 2
     1And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
     2And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.
     3And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
     4For they are impudent children and stiffhearted. I do send thee unto them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD.
     5And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.
     6And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.
     7And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: for they are most rebellious.

    You are called to the rebellious!
  • 1 Chronicles 15:13
    13For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order.

    2 Peter 1:5-7
     5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
     6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
     7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

    1 Corinthians 9:19-21
     19For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
     20And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
     21To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
  • Micah 3:5-6
    5Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.
    6Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.

    Micah 3:5 (NLT) This is what the LORD says:
    “You false prophets are leading my people astray! You promise peace for those who give you food, But you declare war on those who refuse to feed you.”

    Ezekiel 13:1-3
    1And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
    2Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the LORD;
    3Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!

  • Ezekiel 3:4-10
     4And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.
     5For thou art not sent to a people of a strange speech and of an hard language, but to the house of Israel;
     6Not to many people of a strange speech and of an hard language, whose words thou canst not understand. Surely, had I sent thee to them, they would have hearkened unto thee.
     7But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel are impudent and hardhearted.
     8Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and thy forehead strong against their foreheads.
     9As an adamant harder than flint have I made thy forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.
     10Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears.

    Jeremiah 1:4-9
     4Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
     5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
     6Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
     7But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
     8Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
     9Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.

    Matthew 10
     28And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

    Psalm 105:12-15
     12When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it.
     13When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people;
     14He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes;
     15Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
  • Jeremiah 28:9
     9The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.
