The importance of waste management
The most important reason for waste collection is the protection
of the environment and the health of the population.

Sources and Types of Solid Wastes
6. Current Waste management system of Bangladesh
In Bangladesh Waste management has been a chronic problem since a
longtime due to illiteracy and lack of information in a large section of
Citizens are not using dust bins in proper way
The citizens are forced to share bins and containers to dispose their
garbage and sometimes beside the bins, even on the street.
7. Slum side waste in Bangladesh
A huge number of people in urban areas are poor and live in the slums.
Door to door waste collecting workers do not offer their services to
slum areas, because slum dwellers are unable to pay the service
8. Transport system
Due to high expenditure local government is not able to provide
sufficient number of waste disposal vehicles.
Two types of truck are used to carry the waste:
Open trucks- Open trucks are not good environmentally.
Compactor trucks- environmentally friendly garbage trucks.
Open truck Compactor truck
9. Impacts of Solid Waste Disposal on Environment
Open air dumping creates unhygienic and poses enormous threat to the
Causes aesthetic problem and nuisance due to nauseating pungent odor.
Promotes spreading of diseases.
The situation further aggravated by the indiscriminate disposal of Hospital
and Clinical Waste.
Pollute water bodies.
Carbon dioxide and Methane produced from solid waste are extremely
harmful to the environment.
Gases are produced in the landfills through aerobic and anaerobic
decomposition of organic compounds, which are threat to the environment
10. Suggestion for waste management development in Bangladesh
Integrated collection: Collection of different kinds of waste should be
Implemented and monitored to maintain a garbage free society.
Selective segregation: After collection, a proper separation of wastes is
Combustion in garbage to energy method is the most ideal for
generation of energy which can in turn help the community and

13. Vision of clean Bangladesh
In order to achieve the vision in step-by-step manner, there is a need to
set up more community dustbins, have to increase the manpower and
transportation facilities for the effective waste collection system.
Education and training
NGOs and the government need to play an important role in providing
education and training on environmental concerns including waste
management through workshops, rally, human chain, posturing, leaflet,
print media and electronic media.
To summarize this study, it can be assumed that, as a developing
country with high density in population, the average amount of waste
generated per day is quite huge and there is an urgent need of
managing this waste in the best possible ecological ways available, in
order to have a pollution free environment for health and safety of the
