First layer – seen easily, is visible, can be controlled easily
This is the physical body which is studied by branches of
Anatomy & Physiology of Modern science
Can be nourished
Based on ‘food’ consumption – (अन्न)
Hence the Name Annamaya Kosha
Here “food” basically not what is generally understood
Includes all source of energy –
Air + Water + Food

All the Physiological Systems
Yogic Practices - Asan ,Shuddhi Kriya , Mudra , Bandhas

THE MENTAL SHEATH
How does it work
When mind is affected – distortion at Manomaya Kosha
Imbalance – affects “Prana” i.e. Pranamaya Kosha
Results in disease at the Physical level (Annamaya Kosha)
In modern times, it is believed that in most cases Root cause of disease lies in
the Manomaya Kosha specially as Maximum diseases currently are
psychosomatic in nature
Mind can be conditioned in 2 ways
1) Education
2) Sanskara
Quietening of mind is done by culturing
of Emotions through. Mantra, Japa,
Devotional songs

advised for enhancement of Manomaya Kosha –

THE INTELLECTUAL SHEATH
Fourth Layer – just outside of Manomaya Kosha
Works at the Intellect Level / Intelligence Level
Hence the Name – Vignanamaya Kosha
Has the ability to discriminate or discern
Level of cognition, conditioning/
deconditioning of One’s core beliefs
Most deep rooted belief – “I” concept- “Aham” ahamkara
Ability to understand, discriminate,
analyse judge – correctly
Seat of correct thought process, proper judgement proper
rational thinking & correct decision
In a way controls the Manomaya Kosha

SHEATH OF BLISS
5TH & Final Level of Existance
Most subtle of all
The Chitta, believed to rest in its
Intrinsic & Natural state of bliss
Chitta in this level believed
to be free from all Vrittis /
Fluctuations / Disturbances
Here state of Nirbeeja Samadhi achieved

the S-E-M axis can bring a perfect Homeostasis or
Harmony in the body
- This SEMHPO axis works collectively to integrate at all
levels..thus bringing about integration of all the Koshas.

All yogic practices finally lead to Anandmaya
Kosha
Here there is no practice of Yog
As it’s the seat of pure undiluted Bliss
At this level the State of Sat-Chitta-Anand is
achieved
