23. Kristi: Okay, so, the way you read this portrayal of NVivo in the
[dissertation], did it match . . . your sense of how she used
it?
Faculty: No.
Kristi: In what ways was it off?
Faculty: Well I'm being really candid, so you have to be careful if
you use any of this information. . . You erase anything that
would reveal my identity.
Kristi: Absolutely.
Kristi: . . . is there anything that you want . . . omitted from my
analysis?
Faculty: When I talk about doctoral students and getting into
details about someone, I would just hope you’d be
sensitive to how you report that . . . So as long as that’s
done with sensitivity, I’m good.
24. 4 out of 6 students did not want to include the
dissertation in the study (fear of identification)
◦ Professional reputation
Unanticipated uses of dissertation – misrepresentation
◦ Permission from funder
◦ Allow the Chair to deduce the speaker
Not just individual identities, but people and
cultures
“. . . it's an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT responsibility to be
transparent but also be THOUGHTFUL about how you're
impacting communities and entire CULTURES of people
when reporting your view of what you've learned.”
25. Jackson dissertation
◦ No participant dissertation quotes
◦ Examples from my own database as vignettes
◦ No pseudonyms
◦ Inconsistent pronouns
Things to consider
◦ Quotes
◦ Screen Captures
◦ Summary Tables
◦ Demographic or other identifying characteristics
(e.g., stories)
◦ Entire Database
27. So, it's definitely a major
dance. I mean, . . . in the
past, research has . . . been
somewhat hurtful to many
of these communities. I
don't know that I'm saying
this correctly, but it's an
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
responsibility to be
transparent but also be
THOUGHTFUL about how
you're impacting
communities and entire
CULTURES of people when
reporting your view of what
you've learned
I’m thankful that I’m not
the only student who
noticed that the ethical
handling of data is a dance.
I’ve been so concerned with
the protection of the
individuals in this study, it
never occurred to me that
part of the principle of
beneficence might pertain
to groups or cultures that
have been misrepresented
or disenfranchised. I would
have completely missed
this in my own study.
