Roberto Vitale, the former Director of Engineering in Canada, has accepted a new role leading the engineering offices in China and Southeast Asia. Vitale previously worked in China during the construction of Tenaris' Qingdao facility. His new role will involve developing the engineering offices in Qingdao and Beijing. Vitale's experience as head of engineering in Canada prepared him to develop the new Chinese engineering offices. He helped integrate the Canadian engineering teams and develop his successor before taking on the new challenge in China.

Former Engineering Director takes new challenge
in China
For the past two years, Roberto Vitale helped shape the direction of the engineering
department in Canada. Now, a new assignment in China will expand on his recent experience.
Prior to living in Canada, Roberto Vitale worked in China during the construction and
development of the Qingdao facility. Vitale will now return to China developing the engineering
offices at Qingdao, as well as in the Chinese capital of Beijing as the head of Engineering for
China and South East Asia. “My new role is different from when I was in China before,” said
Vitale. “It’s a big, new and very different challenge.” <!--[endif]-->
Vitale’s experience as head of engineering in Canada will assist him in developing the new
engineering offices. “I worked as a project manager for many years, as well as a general
manager of different service industries in Argentina,” said Vitale. “Canada was my first
experience as head of an engineering department for Tenaris, so that was a challenge in itself.
That experience brought me a new vision of the business and management of engineering.”
One of the key projects for Vitale when he first arrived in Canada was the integration and
development of the Canadian engineering department and development of his own successor.
“The main driver was to consolidate the teams in Calgary and Sault Ste. Marie as a single,
strong engineering group. Of course, that was achieved,” said Vitale. “In a short time, with the
help of Terry Watling and Tim Brophy, we were able to create a really great team. It was a
great achievement.”
The Canadian engineering team’s successes during Vitale’s tenure included the integration of
three offices into one in downtown Calgary. “We created a single headquarter through the
renovation of the space at the Watermark, which was a good example of the synergy of our
resources, both internal and external, in Sault Ste. Marie and Calgary,” said Vitale. “We were
also able to finish the master plan started several years ago, including the dispatch of line
number one and the Ultrasonic Tester at Algoma; the development of the signage at the mills
and the early stages of reconditioning the yards.” He noted that due to the market situation,
some of the new projects were delayed. “There are a lot of plans for Nisku and Calgary, as well
as Sault Ste. Marie, that Terry and the engineering team have on the go at various stages of
execution.”
In China, Vitale’s role and the new engineering group were specifically created to provide
engineering assistance and capital investment support to the Tenaris facilities in China and
Indonesia. Together with Exiros, this new unit will be responsible for the development of the
Chinese market for components, equipment and machinery required for industrial investments
of Tenaris at a global level. “We will be supporting our investments worldwide and also
supervising the construction of components in the workshops of Chinese suppliers, which is an
absolute need for this kind of market, where everything develops very quickly and the
companies often don’t pay much attention to cost, quality and compliance. This is one of the
core activities of our department.” <!--[endif]-->
Despite his new challenges in China, Vitale notes that he will cherish his time and experience
in Canada. “I feel the people here are extremely kind and very polite,” said Vitale. “I made
many new friends and had the opportunity to travel around and see some beautiful places.”
Terry Watling succeeded Vitale as the new Director of Engineering for Canada.
