USE VERBS IN SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
A verb shows when an action happens through the tense.
Present tense verbs show action that is happening now. or if the
action is regular, true, and normal.
Knowing how to form verb tenses will help your writing to tell time
punctually.
Here are some rules for forming the present tense.
a. For most verbs, add s: run/runs, walk/walks, jump/jumps.
b. For verbs ending in s, ch, sh, x, and z, add es. press/presses,
teach/teaches, push/pushes, mix/mixes, buzz/buzzes
c. For verbs ending with a consonant and y, change y to i and add es.
cry- - cries fly – flies try – tries supply – supplies
Examples:

d. Add s to the verb when the noun in the subject is singular.

What is an adverb?
An adverb is a word that tells more about a verb. An adverb is a
word that describes a verb, adjective or another adverb
An adverb of manner tells about how an action is done.

What are pronouns?
Pronouns are substitute words. They
stand in place of nouns. Pronouns change in form
according to their use in the sentence. There are five
general classes of pronouns. These are personal,
interrogative, demonstrative and relative pronouns.

Recognize and use simple, compound
and complex sentences
What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words or word that expresses a complete
thought. To express a complete thought, a sentence needs subject and
predicate. Sentences are classified into simple, compound,
and complex.
a. A simple sentence expresses a single thought or idea.
Example: Ana and Liza have been good friends.
Ana usually accompanied and helped Liza.
b. A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses joined
by coordinate conjunctions, like and, but, so, and or.
And is used to show similar or additional ideas.
But is used to show contrast.
While means at the time.
So is used to show consequence or result.
Or is used to show choice or alternative.
Example:
Gerry’s father prepared the boat and he set sail to town.
My father was funny but my mother was serious in disposition.
Study your lessons well so you will get a high grade.
On Saturdays, Jansen usually helps his mother cook special
dishes for the family or he helps fix the cabinets in the bedroom.
c. Complex sentence is made up of two or more ideas combined by
using conjunctions like because, so that, where, if, although, among
others to show relationships of ideas.
Use
because to reason;
so that to show effect;
when to express at or during the time the action is done or a
situation happens;
where to express at, in, or to what place; if to show condition;
although to mean in spite of the fact that.
Example:
Filipinos can easily overcome problems because they have supportive
families.
I use animal manure as fertilizer so that my plants will grow
healthy and robust.
The helpers were inside when a strange occurrence
happened.
All the requests will be granted if the budget is released on
time.
Henry was coaxed by his friend Carlos to try starting the
plane’s engine, although they had no intension of having a
flying adventure.

Note Details in a Selection
Noting details is a reading comprehension skill that involves picking
out, from a piece of text, the particular piece or pieces of information
to achieve a given purpose such as answering a question in a test.
When you read a selection, look for important and specific
details. These details should give complete picture of the story by
identifying the setting, the characters and plot of the story.

Predict Outcomes Based on the Selection
Predicting outcomes is an important skill in Reading. It is
identifying an expected action or conclusion based on the
events in a selection. It also means telling what will probably
happen next. To be able to do this, you must know how to
associate facts and see their probable connections. You can
also base your prediction on the mood and trait of characters.
This is a common happening in some of the far
flung rural barangays. The children seldom complete
elementary. The parents often ask their children to
help in the household or farm work.

Infer General Mood or Feeling Expressed
An inferring is a form of reasoning in which one derives a
conclusion from facts or assumptions based on experiences. Readers
infer from the text during and after reading. They go beyond the words
of the text to a judgment about wat is not there but is implied.
The mood or tone of a selection refers to the overall or common
qualities and emotions revealed in the way the characters feel and
behave. This may also projected through the setting of the story or
selection. Just as a person feels in many ways, different words can
express fun, sadness, anger, happiness, sympathy, seriousness, and
many other feelings.
Examples: What mood or feeling can you derive from
the event?
Gabriela Silang fought to make our country free.

Of all the days in the week, Mondays are the worst.
They are the slowest and most unfriendly. I always feel
as if we’ve been out of school for a long vacation, and

Sequence Events in the Selection
The order in which events happen in a story, or how ideas are
arranged, is called sequence of events or ideas. This helps you
understand what you are reading. In sequencing events, it is important
to note signals such as in the year, five years, after, first, next, then or
finally.
Examples: Read and understand the selection carefully. Sequence the
events listed below in their order by writing number 1 to 5.
Mother took us to Bicol last vacation. She took us to see many beautiful
spots. I saw Mt. Mayon for the first time. We went to Mayon Rest House way
up to the volcano. We visited the ruins of the old church buried at its foot. I

Subject-Verb Agreement: Indefinite Pronouns
Indefinite pronouns include everybody, anybody, everyone,
anyone, nothing, each. Unlike regular pronouns, they do not
necessarily refer to a particular person or thing. Most
indefinite pronouns are grammatically singular and, when
used as subjects in a sentence, should take singular verbs.

Using Adverbs to Compare
Adverbs compare the actions of two or more persons, places, or things.
Example: Dan ran fast.
Amy ran faster than Dan.
Noah ran the fastest of all.
Add -er to a short adverb to compare two actions.

Identify the Main Idea/Theme of a Selection
Main Idea - tells what something is all about. It tells the topic of the
paragraph and what the paragraph says about the topic.
Main idea of a paragraph is the most important idea that a
paragraph says about its topic. Sometimes the main idea is stated in
a paragraph. When the main idea is directly stated, it may be found
anywhere in the paragraph-at the beginning, in the middle or at the
end.
When not stated directly, the main idea may be repressed by
making a summary of the important ideas stated in the paragraph.
Example:
Animals reproduce in different ways. Some gave birth to
live animals. Other animals lay eggs in which the young
animals develop and hatch. Dogs give birth to puppies.

Based on the Given Information
A conclusion is a statement you have to construct after reading about some information or
learning some facts.
In order to draw a conclusion about something that you have read, you must use the clues that the
author gives and your own knowledge and experience.
Whenever you draw a conclusion, make sure that it makes sense with all of the information given.
Read this sample paragraph. See if you can use the clues the author gives and your own experience to
figure out how Nena feels.
Tears rolled down Nena’s face as she watched her two brothers try to win the three-legged race at
the park. Nena had never seen a funnier race.
Is Nena happy? Or is she unhappy? In the sentences, there were several clues to help you figure
out how Nena feels. First you were told that tears rolled down Nena’s face. From that clue, you could
assume that Nena was crying. You know from your experience that people who are crying are usually
unhappy.
