LIONEL
(discouraged, tired)
Hi, you wanted to see me?
LEARNER
Yes, is this still a good time?
LIONEL
Yeah, now is fine.
LEARNER
I’d like to discuss some feedback
about your sales numbers. Would you
be open to that?
LIONEL
Yeah, um. Feedback would be good.
LEARNER
Let’s focus on the number of
successful sales closed over the last
quarter.
LIONEL
(downcast)
I saw the quarterly report just came
out.
LEARNER
You closed fifty one percent of your
sales calls this quarter, is that
right?
LIONEL
That sounds about right.
LEARNER
And you closed seventy two percent of
your sales the quarter before. Is
that right?

2. LIONEL
(quiet, almost to himself)
Yeah… that’s been weighing on me.
LEARNER
I’ve noticed you’ve struggled with
remembering details lately. Do you
agree?
LIONEL
(dejected but accepting)
I can see that. I’ve just felt like
I’m in a fog recently.
LEARNER
If your closure rate remains around
fifty percent, our team likely won't
hit our sales goals this quarter.
LIONEL
I don't want to see that happen. I
hate feeling like I'm letting people
down. Things have just been...hard
lately.
LEARNER
It sounds like things have been
difficult. Can you help me to
understand what's going on for you?
LIONEL
(pained)
...It's my dad.
Lung cancer. You always think it can't
happen to your family.
LEARNER
I’m sorry you’re going through that. That
would be a lot for anyone to handle.
LIONEL
(gradually revealing more emotion)
We get by, but it's a lot.

3. Meds, appointments, bills, fighting with
his insurance, *more* meds... it takes it
out of you.
I just have to keep moving. If I stop, I
think about it. And if I think about it...
...thanks.
LEARNER
Between work and the stress of caring for
your dad, it sounds like you're exhausted.
LIONEL
(grateful you get it)
Exactly. I'm so tired all the time now.
It's like everything I'm doing is in slow
motion. I try to speed up, and I just...
can't.
LEARNER
It sounds like that exhaustion is causing
the drop in your sales.
LIONEL
I guess I hadn't made that connection. It
just felt like another thing in my life
that was going wrong.
LEARNER
How can I support you through this? What
changes would help you?
LIONEL
Well... my dad's appointments are on
Tuesdays. Would it be possible to work from
home or adjust my office hours? Just on
that day?
LEARNER
That's a great idea. If it's alright with
you, I'll set up a meeting between us and
HR tomorrow to discuss specifics.
LIONEL
That would be great. Thank you so much, I
think that will really help.

4. LEARNER
What else can I do to support you?
LIONEL
Maybe we could meet again in a few weeks?
I know it won't happen right away, but I
really want to get back on track. I think
having a check in to see how this change
affects things might be helpful.
LEARNER
That's a great idea. I'll set something up
in about three weeks to see how things are
going.
LIONEL
(hopeful)
That sounds great.
