2. Background Information: Jackson
Laboratory
Independent, nonprofit organization that focuses on
mammalian genetics research to improve human health
(The Jackson Laboratory, 2014).
Employees conduct genetic research, provide scientific
services and genetic resources to laboratories around the
world, and educate students on the topic of genetic
research.
Provide scientific resources, techniques, software, and
data to scientists around the world making them a leader
in genomic solutions in the biomedical community.

3. Hypotheses and Research Questions
H0: Humans would rather see mice used as test subjects
for medical research over people.
Ha: Humans would NOT rather see mice used as test
subjects for medical research over people.
1. Would you rather see humans being used for medical
testing over mice?
2. Would you consider participating in a research study?
3. Amount of approval for animal testing?
4. Would you support a brand of products if it did away
with animal testing?
4. Survey Sample
1. Please indicate age by marking
the appropriate circle.
2. Have you ever been exposed
to any videos or other media
which portrays animal
testing?
3. Are you aware of any brand
products that use animals for
testing?
4. How do you feel about mice
being used for medical
research?
5. Would you rather see humans
used for research instead of
mice?
6. Would you consider
participating in a research
study if it helped humans
with different medical issues?
7. What is your stand in regard
to animal testing? 1-5 scale
8. Would you support a brand of
products if thy did away with
animal testing? Why or why
not?
11. Research Challenges
Challenges were centered on administering a survey,
collecting data, and interpreting the data.
Steps to help minimize challenges:
1. Ensure survey questions articulate a clear purpose for
instigating the questionnaire.
2. Demonstrate a clean and uncluttered survey layout
to maximize responses.
3. Understanding that there are many opportunities for
things to go wrong when conducting survey research.
12. Implications and Recommendations
Conduct further research to answer the following
questions:
Why did 51% of participants answer neutral on the subject of
animal testing (question 7)
Lack of understanding of the subject?
Have they never been exposed to media that portrays animal testing?
Would neutral be the most chosen answer for other questions if it
was an option?
Why did 60% of the participants rather see mice used as test
subjects while 60 percent of the participants are willing to
participate in a research study? (questions 5/6)
13. Summary
The team will fail to reject the null hypothesis (H0) that
humans would rather see mice used as test subjects for
medical research because there is insufficient evidence to
indicate otherwise.
Survey still had some contradictory results
Warrants further testing
Jackson Laboratory can continue to use mice as test
subjects without causing any moral dilemma.

Editor's Notes
Why Jackson Laboratory?: Chose a company that would run into morally heated issues with their work. Plan to gage participants to see what they think about animal testing
Conducted any analyses assuming null hypothesis is correct
Questions: Important to ask these kinds of questions to see if people are supportive of Jackson’s work and research. Uproar is a big no-no. Decreases sales. Also important to be conscious of consumer thoughts in order to align with them better if necessary.
5 age groups: 18-25, 26-35, 36-45, 46-65, 65+
Dichotomous: yes or no
Multiple choice/single answer: yes, no, don’t know
Dichotomous: agree/disagree
Dichotomous: yes/no
Dichotomous: yes/no (some no answers)
1-5 scale. 1=completely for, 2=for, 3=neutral, 4=against, 5=completely against
Dichotomous: yes or no (some no answers) PLUS reasons
Ages mostly evenly distributed. Low percentage on 65+ range and highest in 46-65
Mostly half and half, slightly more to the yes side.
3) Not much to be concluded here. Of those that were concrete with their answer, half yes, half no. 26% unsure
4)Majority agrees, but only 6% more than neutral answers. Smallest percentage don’t know
5)Majority would NOT rather see humans tested (60%)
6)60% would agree to participate in a research study
CONTRADICTORY?
Confidence interval (90%) test conducted on question 5 because of its significance to the research questions. Dichotomous and most telling of what participants really thought on an easy to analyze scale.
7) Scaled Question
1=completely for, 2=completely against, 3=neutral, 4=against, 5=completely against
Majority neutral. Contradictory because 60% said they would rather see humans tested and would participate in a study, but 51% say they are neutral on the issue.
8) Yes or no question, large majority would support brand that did away with animal testing. Correlates to most other data.
Reasons given for question 8 answer
40%: would rather see humans tested over animals
20%: support both human and animal testing
14%: Support brand regardless of testing belief
14%: No answer
6%: would rather see animal testing over human
6%: Does not support any kind of testing
Challenging for collection/administration because true survey intended for clients of Jackson Laboratory. Not possible for class, so some data generated and other data from random participants
Questions must make sense and be easy to answer
Messy surveys are harder to read and comprehend. Good style=better results
Be aware of error. They always pop up and must be accounted for/expected
Question 7) Other data collected does not indicate neutrality. Why choose neutral?
Questions 5 & 6) Seems contradictory because majority would rather see testing done on mice, but 60% are willing to also participate in a study if it would help humanity. Interesting to research further to understand motivations.
Rejection of null hypothesis based on question 5
Further testing: still the existence of contradictory data. More research to fill in holes/understand contradictions in data
