2. Early Life
Selena Marie Gomez is an
American singer and actress
born on the 22nd July 1992 in
Grand Prairie, Texas. Her
mother gave birth to her at
16 and she was still trying to
build her own acting career;
as a result Selena grew up on
set with her mother.
3. Acting Career
She landed her first acting role in Barney
and Friends at the age of 10. She appeared
in 14 episodes in 2002-2004 and while
filming the series, she had a cameo role in
the film Spy-Kids 3-D: Game Over and
made a guest appearance in a 2006
episode of the Disney series The Sweet Life
of Zack & Cody.
In 2007, Selena secured a recurring role in
Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, and
during this time she filmed pilot seasons for
two spin-off series, ultimately landing the
lead role of Alex Russo in the Disney
Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place.
She recorded the theme song for the series
Everything is Not What It Seem.
4. Acting Career continued…
At the age of 16, Selena formed her
own production company which she
called July Moon Productions. It is
speculated that she chose this name
because she was born in July and
‘Selena’ means ‘moon’ in Greek.
She partnered with XYZ Films for the
project and executively produced the
popular Netflix original series Thirteen
Reasons Why; and has two other titles
under development.
Selena starred alongside Demi Lovato in the Disney Channel movie
Princess Protection Programme and they recorded a song together for
the soundtrack that was later released as a promotional single.
5. Beginning Her Singing Career
During her stint staring in Wizards of
Waverly Place, Selena recorded a
variety of songs for the soundtracks
of other Disney movies.
Selena starred in the musical
Another Cinderella Story, as the
main character, and recorded
three songs for the movie
soundtrack, releasing one as a
promotional single in 2008.
6. Singing Career
In August 2009, the group released their
debut album Kiss & Tell which reached
number 9 on the Billboard albums chart in
the U.S. They went on to release their
second album that same year, titled A Year
Without Rain which reached number 4 on
the Billboard albums chart.
Selena hoped to successfully transition into music, so she formed a
pop-rock band called Selena Gomez & The Scene through her record
deal with Hollywood Records. The name of the band was meant as a
dig at all the people who called Selena a “wannabe scene”
Selena Gomez was signed to a contract with
Hollywood Records by the age of 16; the label
had already signed two previous co-stars,
Demi Lovato (Barney and Friends) and Miley
Cyrus (Hannah Montana).
7. Singing Career continued…
Selena Gomez released her first solo
album Stars Dance. She released Come
& Get It as a single which reached the
top 10 of the Billboard charts and the
album itself was released in 2013,
debuting at number one on the U.S
Billboard charts.
In October 2015, Selena released her
second album Revival which debuted at
number one on the Billboard charts. 3
singles from this album (which ones)
went on to top the Top 40 charts, and
Selena remains one of only six female
artists to have three singles from the
same album reach number one on the
Top 40 charts.
8. Fashion Line
In 2010, Selena launched her fashion line Dream Out Loud,
which consisted of bohemian dresses, skirts, jeans,
jackets, scarves and hats; all of which were made from
eco-friendly or recyclable materials. All of the clothes
tags featured an inspirational quote from Selena herself,
she stated “I’m just looking to send a good message”
9. Personal Struggles
Selena Gomez had to cancel part of her world tour
for her first album Stars Dance due to a diagnosis of
the auto-immune disease Lupus and entered a rehab
facility to undergo chemotherapy.
In 2016 she began her
world tour for her new
album Revival but had
to cancel half way
through due to
anxiety, panic attacks
and depression, all of
which she suffered
from as a side-effect
of her Lupus.
Selena has used her personal experiences and the difficult times she has
been through to try and help others in similar situations. She is a massive
advocate for Lupus Research and mental health awareness; this particularly
can be seen through her openness with her fans about the things she has
been through, and her dedication to the project of producing the
controversial but very popular Netflix original 13 Reasons Why.
10. Charity Work
Selena Gomez does
a huge amount of
charity work with
organisations and
projects including
UNICEF and Disney’s
Friends for Change.
Once Selena openly
told of her struggle
with Lupus, fans
started donating to
Lupus Research UK.
Selena herself raised
over $500,000 for
Lupus research.
