Pollution Control Board(CPCB) considers air to be clean
if the levels are below 50%.

morbidity effects such as asthma, bronchitis and oxygen
deficiency in blood.
• Out of the 190 cities monitored, apart from
Malapuram(Kerela) and Madurai(Tamil Nadu) all other
cities have high levels of air pollution, mostly PM

Health hazards of air pollution
• Air pollution causes about 20 % of lung cancer and six
percent of high blood pressure deaths in India - Aaron
Cohen, Head, the Global Burden of Diseases group
• Air pollutants incite processes that lead to high blood
pressure, blood clotting, and electrical instability in the
heart, which can translate into heart attack, stroke, and
sudden cardiac death

Facts about industrial pollution
• Air pollution caused by the burning of fossil fuels like
coal and diesel has contributed to a worrisome
slowdown in rice harvest growth in India in the past two
decades
• India, the world's third-largest coal producer, is among
the world's top CO2 emitters. - National Geographic
• According to a research survey conducted by the
University of Kashmir across cement industries in India,
93% of the workers complained of wheezing, 71% had
irregular heart beats and 90% had cough problems due
to cement dust pollution

Facts about industrial pollution
• A study conducted by the North Maharashtra University,
Jalgaon across employees of cotton and other textile
industries in Maharashtra reveals that 51%-71% suffered
from chest tightness, 55%-62% experienced chest pain
while 33%-42% reported frequent coughs primarily due
to exposure to cotton dust pollution
• Cotton dust pollution is the primary cause of
Byssiniosis(a disease caused by exposure to cotton dust
which causes irritation in the mucous membrane in eye,
nose & throat, dry cough, chest tightness and wheezing

What can be learnt from other
countries??
• In Beijing, the government restricts what days you can
drive your car if there are too many consecutive days of
high pollution. They shut down factories and prohibit the
use of firecrackers and barbecues.
• Paris chooses to make public transportation free on days
with high pollution.
• Japan, whose pollution levels were once on par with the
current China, introduced drastic laws which was known
as the Pollution Diet of 1970. Today, Japan’s cities are
among the world’s least polluted, according to the WHO.
