1. INTRODUCTION :
The company was incorporated on 23rd
March 1971 in Ooty, India as PLUTO
EXPORTS & Consultants Limited and obtained its Certificate of Commencement of
Business on 19th
April 1985 under the Companies’ Act 1956. The company changed its name
to STERLING BIOTECH LIMITED .Sterling biotech commission expansion project for
manufacture of GELATIN. Sterling bags an export order for supply of GELATN. Sterling
biotech obtains Rs.5.5cr order for supply of GELATIN for Cardiac Health Inc. Sterling
changes its biotech symbol from “STERLINTEA” TO “STERLIN BIO”.
This company is among the five largest GELATIN producer’s in the world with more
than 7% market share. It is the largest producer of GELATIN in India, and the largest
producer of GELATIN pharmaceutical industries in Asia. The company has a captive Heavy
Fuel Oil (HFO) based power plant to minimise its power cost and become self-sufficient in
its power requirements. It is also has microbiology laboratory which is equipped with all
facilities to handle culture maintenance, preparation and propagation.

2. HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION :
Sterling biotech limited, Ooty plant is located at the NILGIRIS
DISTRICT,TAMILNADU, INDIA. The Niligiris is described as BLUE MOUNTAINS and a
veritable fairyland. Among those the GELATIN PLANT was built in the queen of hills, Ooty
during the year 1971 with technical collaboration with M/S ROUSSELOT
KHULMANFrance (presently Sanofi biotech, France) .The initial business was operated
under the name of protein products of India limited and later amalgamated with RALLIS
India limited.
The initial business was operated under the name of protein products where during
APRIL 2004, Sterling biotech limited has acquired this Ootygelatin business as part of
corporate strategic initiatives to create strong domestic and global presence. Ootygelatin plant
has achieved ISO 9001:2000 and HACCP (IS 150000) certifications. All products are
manufactured under scientifically hygienic conditions like pure air, cold climate and fresh
water, which make it ideal for gelatin manufacturing process. Through constant is upgraded
to meet customer’s various requirements.
They also provide technical support to our customer to improve their end product. By
selection of choicest raw materials and continuous modernization of plant and machinery,
they have achieved highest quality standards. By improving various processes, we are well
positioned to guarantee best products and service reliability to our customers. At sterling they
always endeavour to built business relations on long-term basis as business partners across or
supply chain management. We have dedicated ourselves for green manufacturing practices to
build eco friendly approach to safe-guard environment and society at large as corporate social

2.2 DESCRIPTIONS:
Sterling biotech limited manufactures gelatin and its derivatives, resoids, glue and
allopathic pharmacy. As a major gelatin manufacturer there are well positioned to meet the
most stringent quality standards demanded by customers and provide them technical services
as and when required. They have strong research database and facilities to answer any queries
regarding gelatin. A new product innovation represent an important part of their philosophy
and shall propel their future

3. OBJECTIVES :
STERLIN BIOTECH LTD are committed to enhance their customer’s satisfaction in
manufacturing GELATIN and delivering their products in time by roadways and airways.
STERLIN has developed world-class technology for GELATIN by establishing state of art
facility. The company is highly concentrating on their product’s quality. The company has a
highly technologized machineries to test the quality of GELATIN. Then, it has been sent for
the second testing to professionists knowledge and it approved by them.
They are encouraging their workers to fully engage in their work. If workers are
taking too long to finish their project, the company will pay the workers overtime to motivate
them. The production process will not disturb any environmental resources. In case, if there is
any damages on supply, they will not hesitate to reissue the products.

6. VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS :
There are different departments, which work for the development of organization. The
various departments in the organisation are headed by the respective department heads. The
following departments are working in a sterling biotech limited.

6.1 PURCHASE DEPARTMENT :
The main function of the department is buying SWEETENERS, FLAVOURING
AND COLOURING which are added in preparation of food gelatin . And also acids and
alkaline such as caustic lime or sodium carbonate are used to extract minerals and bacteria
from the animal parts.
The above given products are either produced in the food processing plant or
purchased from outsider vendors .Stores receive the purchase indent and check whether it is
available or not they sent into purchase department. purchase assistant gets approval from
G.M after getting approval from purchase manager prepares quotation to parties.
Purchase department is the primary department in the company. The demand and
supply of the good is maintained by the purchase of the raw materials. The main objective of
the purchase department is accuracy, quality of products and customer satisfaction.

6.2 STORES DEPARMENT :
The store Department prepares the receipt and issues of chemicals. It maintains
mainly chemicals stocks. code number is the ID for each chemicals that are used for
demineralization.
Daily stock received note is prepared to reduce frauds and confusions. Approval
goods of sample ordered, then only preparing material invoice notes. Chemicals are stored
properly in an order of alphabetic to avoid confusions. A store book maintained to show
which date the chemical is opened.
They also maintain daily book which includes date, time, invoice, Quality of
chemicals. Which are maintained by the store Department officers and in changes

6.3 PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT :
Production department activities are made of native collagenous raw materials which
are derived from connective tissue or bones of mammals. Although poultry and fish are
applicable, they are of miner importants as a raw material source.

BONE CHIPS :
All the raw materials they use originate from healthy, slaughtered animals approved
for human consumption.
Fresh bones are produced in meat processing companies. These bones are suited for
the production of gelatin only after a careful pre-treatment step. First the bones are crushed to
size 5 to 10mm, defatted in hot water and freed from perhaps still adherent tissue.

All raw materials are subject to the strict regulations of meat processing and hence to
the complete control of the production department.
PRETREATMENT OF RAW MATERIAL :
ACID TREATMENT :
An Acid Treatment over one day is all it takes to make the collagen it contains soluble
in hot water; this is conditional for extraction process. The excessive acid is partially
neutralized and the salts are washed out by exchanging the waters several Times.
ALKALINE TREATMENT:

The raw material can be alternatively treated with diluted sodium hydroxide instead of
calcium hydroxide acid produce the same results.Afterthisprocessingstep, calledliming.

GRINTING; SIEVING; BLENDING :
After packing into silos, big-bags, sacks or drums the completion of all necessary tests
and the ultimate release by the quality. More than 135 years of experience in the field of
collagen proteins are the bases of gelatin performance.

6.4 QUALITY CONTROL DEPARTMENT :
CLIA requires that each test system, the laboratory must test, at a minimum 2 levels
of external QC materials each day it performs the non waived test.
Audit micro controls has designed quality control offering to ‘’make life in the lab
easier’’: Audit’s complete line of multi–level materials include serum based matrices.They
are committed to continues improvement in the quality control materials, data reduction
reports and technical services.

6.5 SALES DEPARTMENT :
Maintaining continuity of territory coverage and gaining deeper market share of
existing territories the Sales department offers the flexibility to quickly ramp they pharma
sales team up or down based on their need. Budget or business demand. Their advance
analytics tools allow them to track effectiveness and swiftly modified programs to maximize
success and meet their business objectives.

6.6 MARKETING DEPAERTMENT :
This department involves in selling produced gelatin.
• On the bases of application, gelatin market is segmented into food and
pharmaceutical.
• Information contains that market sizes, forecast, trends, regulation and
future development in changing global markets.

development and strategies deployed to win, along with the profiles of key
market players.
• The market segmentation is based on source, function, application, and
regions.
• Marketing has a intensive position in todays business activities. Marketing
of the products helps in gaining popular and profits easily.
• Marketing is the heart of all industrial activities.it is of vital importants for
all businessmen to understand the role of marketing in the economic

6.7 ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT :
Accounting of income and expenditure is done at accrual bases and payment is for
each purchase.For the purchase of the material gate entry should be arranged by purchase
assistants.Accounts department maintain book like ledger, general ledger, cash book, bank
accounts. Cash book especially show day to day expenses also.
Net profit is prepared and calculated accurately. It is the main aim of the industry.
The cash transaction are entered in the subsidiary books. The trail balance is calculated by
monthly once.
At the end of financial year trading profit and loss account is prepared to calculate the
profit or loss of the company. The accounts department in the company is fully computerized
heads accounts department.

6.8 PERSONAL DEPARTMENT :
Personal department is for planning of future action success. So planning may be
broadly defined as concept expectation moral power and controlling the changes made.
• Personal offer be knowledge in his work. the most important function
of personal management is manpower planning.
• Personal department include the time keeping and the shifts of the
labourers. The time officers maintains the workers attendance register,
shift register etc., the shift cards are issued to the workers
• The personal department maintained by the personal manager. The
personal managers do the work of labours problem oriented.
• This department is responsible for recruitment placement and
compensation, motivation and development of employee of the
company.

WORKERS WELFARE :
Primary facility:
 Canteen facility are provided inside the campus which costs are not even
one-third of the rates which compared to outside.
 Free bus facility for their transportation from company to residence.
Medical facility:
 This is a comprehensive scheme comprising medi claim accident benefit
and compensation.
Safety training:
 Safety training is begin to all employees working there once in every
year.
 It gives three forms.

If an employee is not able to complete or get trained or be efficient in training1, he
will be transformed to training2 and then training3. And the minimum of rs50 and a
maximum above 200rs per day is given.

 It need low consumption of stores and chemicals

 Accident percentage is low
 Less contamination

 High price in trade transaction
 There could be some problem with kosher and vegetarian as gelatin is derived
from animals.
7. CONCLUSION:
The industrial training in sterling biotech company helped me providing knowledge
about various department.
The management and department heads co-operated well to complete industrial
training in successful manner. It help me to know the companies rules and regulation. The
industrial training period I spend in biotech industry was quite useful to gain good knowledge
about the various operation of working at the final stage.
The quality control department place a vital role in maintaining the finished product
up to the customer satisfaction. The worker are backbone of the company, if it would have
been a longer period I could have got a chance of doing some practical work. That this
training experience is helpful to do the work efficiently and perform well in reality.

INTRODUCTION : The company was incorporated on 23rd March 1971 in Ooty, India as PLUTO EXPORTS & Consultants Limited and obtained its Certificate of Commencement of Business on 19th April 1985 under the Companies’ Act 1956. The company changed its name to STERLING BIOTECH LIMITED .Sterling biotech commission expansion project for manufacture of GELATIN. Sterling bags an export order for supply of GELATN. Sterling biotech obtains Rs.5.5cr order for supply of GELATIN for Cardiac Health Inc. Sterling changes its biotech symbol from “STERLINTEA” TO “STERLIN BIO”. This company is among the five largest GELATIN producer’s in the world with more than 7% market share. It is the largest producer of GELATIN in India, and the largest producer of GELATIN pharmaceutical industries in Asia. The company has a captive Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) based power plant to minimise its power cost and become self-sufficient in its power requirements. It is also has microbiology laboratory which is equipped with all facilities to handle culture maintenance, preparation and propagation. 1
  • 2. 2. HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION : Sterling biotech limited, Ooty plant is located at the NILGIRIS DISTRICT,TAMILNADU, INDIA. The Niligiris is described as BLUE MOUNTAINS and a veritable fairyland. Among those the GELATIN PLANT was built in the queen of hills, Ooty during the year 1971 with technical collaboration with M/S ROUSSELOT KHULMANFrance (presently Sanofi biotech, France) .The initial business was operated under the name of protein products of India limited and later amalgamated with RALLIS India limited. The initial business was operated under the name of protein products where during APRIL 2004, Sterling biotech limited has acquired this Ootygelatin business as part of corporate strategic initiatives to create strong domestic and global presence. Ootygelatin plant has achieved ISO 9001:2000 and HACCP (IS 150000) certifications. All products are manufactured under scientifically hygienic conditions like pure air, cold climate and fresh water, which make it ideal for gelatin manufacturing process. Through constant is upgraded to meet customer’s various requirements. They also provide technical support to our customer to improve their end product. By selection of choicest raw materials and continuous modernization of plant and machinery, they have achieved highest quality standards. By improving various processes, we are well positioned to guarantee best products and service reliability to our customers. At sterling they always endeavour to built business relations on long-term basis as business partners across or supply chain management.   • 4. 2.2 DESCRIPTIONS: Sterling biotech limited manufactures gelatin and its derivatives, resoids, glue and allopathic pharmacy. As a major gelatin manufacturer there are well positioned to meet the most stringent quality standards demanded by customers and provide them technical services as and when required. They have strong research database and facilities to answer any queries regarding gelatin. A new product innovation represent an important part of their philosophy and shall propel their future 4
  • 5. 3. OBJECTIVES : STERLIN BIOTECH LTD are committed to enhance their customer’s satisfaction in manufacturing GELATIN and delivering their products in time by roadways and airways. STERLIN has developed world-class technology for GELATIN by establishing state of art facility. The company is highly concentrating on their product’s quality. The company has a highly technologized machineries to test the quality of GELATIN. Then, it has been sent for the second testing to professionists knowledge and it approved by them. They are encouraging their workers to fully engage in their work. If workers are taking too long to finish their project, the company will pay the workers overtime to motivate them. The production process will not disturb any environmental resources. In case, if there is any damages on supply, they will not hesitate to reissue the products. 5

  • 8. 6. VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS : There are different departments, which work for the development of organization. The various departments in the organisation are headed by the respective department heads. The following departments are working in a sterling biotech limited. DEPARTMENTS: • Purchase • Stores • Production • Quality control • Sales • Marketing • Accounts • Personal. 8
  • 9. 6.1 PURCHASE DEPARTMENT : The main function of the department is buying SWEETENERS, FLAVOURING AND COLOURING which are added in preparation of food gelatin . And also acids and alkaline such as caustic lime or sodium carbonate are used to extract minerals and bacteria from the animal parts. The above given products are either produced in the food processing plant or purchased from outsider vendors .Stores receive the purchase indent and check whether it is available or not they sent into purchase department. purchase assistant gets approval from G.M after getting approval from purchase manager prepares quotation to parties. Purchase department is the primary department in the company. The demand and supply of the good is maintained by the purchase of the raw materials. The main objective of the purchase department is accuracy, quality of products and customer satisfaction. 9
  • 11. 6.2 STORES DEPARMENT : The store Department prepares the receipt and issues of chemicals. It maintains mainly chemicals stocks. code number is the ID for each chemicals that are used for demineralization. Daily stock received note is prepared to reduce frauds and confusions. Approval goods of sample ordered, then only preparing material invoice notes. Chemicals are stored properly in an order of alphabetic to avoid confusions. A store book maintained to show which date the chemical is opened. They also maintain daily book which includes date, time, invoice, Quality of chemicals. Which are maintained by the store Department officers and in changes 11
  • 13. 6.3 PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT : Production department activities are made of native collagenous raw materials which are derived from connective tissue or bones of mammals. Although poultry and fish are applicable, they are of miner importants as a raw material source. 13
  • 15. BONE CHIPS : All the raw materials they use originate from healthy, slaughtered animals approved for human consumption. Fresh bones are produced in meat processing companies. These bones are suited for the production of gelatin only after a careful pre-treatment step. First the bones are crushed to size 5 to 10mm, defatted in hot water and freed from perhaps still adherent tissue. 15
  • 16. All raw materials are subject to the strict regulations of meat processing and hence to the complete control of the production department. PRETREATMENT OF RAW MATERIAL : ACID TREATMENT : An Acid Treatment over one day is all it takes to make the collagen it contains soluble in hot water; this is conditional for extraction process. The excessive acid is partially neutralized and the salts are washed out by exchanging the waters several Times. ALKALINE TREATMENT: 16
