2. INTRODUCTION:-
Botanical name : Oryza sativa
Family : Poaceae
Chromosome 2n = 24
Origin : Indo-Burma (Indo-Myanmar)
India is 2nd largest producers -20%
24 species in which 22 are wild and two are cultivated i.e. Oryza sativa (found
in Asia, America and Europe), Oryza glaberrima (found in west Africa)
Oryza sativa grouped into three sub species –
A. indica
B. javanica
C. japonica

3. What is Golden Rice ?
Golden rice is a variety of rice ( Oryza sativa )
produced through genetic engineering to
biosynthesize beta – carotene, a precursor of
vitamin A, in the edible parts of rice.

4. Rice is a staple food crop for over half of the
world’s population, making up 30-72% of the
energy intake for people in Asian countries, making
it the perfect crop for targeting vitamin
deficiencies.

5. In 2005, 190 million children and 19 million pregnant
women, in 122 countries, were estimated to be affected by
VAD.

7. The scientific details of product of an eight-year project by
Ingo Potrykus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and
Peter Beyer of the University of Freiburg about golden rice
were first published in Science in 2000.

8. The first field trials of golden rice cultivars conducted by
Louisiana State University Agricultural Center in 2004.
Aditional trials have been conducted in the Philippines and
Taiwan, and in Bangladesh (2015).
The original golden rice was called SGR1, and under
greenhouse conditions it produced 1.6µg/g of carotenoids

10. Advantages and disadvantages of
golden rice:-
Advantages Disadvantages
Gene added that produces beta
carotene (a red/orange important for
maintaining health). This gives rice
the golden color
Beta carotene is needed to make
vitamin A, which helps with eyesight
Can be used in areas where vitamin A
deficiency is common, so it helps to
prevent blindness.
Beta carotene levels may not be high
enough to make an impact
Can cross breed and contaminate
wild rice
Food from GM plants may harm
people
Seed for GM plants can be expensive

and Trademark Office.

12. Golden Rice 2
In 2005, a team of researchers at Syngenta produced Golden Rice 2.
They combined the phytoene synthase gene from maize with crt1
from the original golden rice.
Golden rice 2 produces 23 times more carotenoids than golden rice
( up to 37µg/g ), and preferentially accumulates beta – carotene
(up to 31µg/g of the 37µg/g of carotenoids ).
Golden Rice 2 contains sufficient provitamin A to provide the entire
dietary requirement via daily consumption of some 75g per day

14. Conclusion:-
Golden rice required huge work .
Although it is a GMO and certainly frowned upon by certain
parties, it is also highly regarded as the next solution to the
vitamin A deficiency problems in places like India, and the
Philippines
One of the biggest problems comes from distribution because so
many of the people who need it the most are the hardest to reach
