2. Hypothermia occurs when the newborns body temperature drops below
36.5C(97.7F) generally because the environment is too cold for the body.

The room is extremely cold.
Newborn is wet.
Baby is not feeding well.
Rooming in not practiced.
Baby has birth asphyxia and does not have energy to keep warm.
The newborn is uncovered,even for brief period
5. Management of Hypothermia
Keep the room warm.
Remove cold clothes and replace with warm clothers.
Rewarm quickly by skin to skin contact.
Radiant heater/incubator,thermostatically controlled heated mattress set
a 37-38C.
Once baby’s temperature reaches 34C the rewarming process should be
slowed down.
Continue breast feeding.
6. Monitor axillary temperature every 1/2hr till it reaches
36.5C,then hrly.
For next 4 hrs.,2hrly for 12 hrs therefore and 3 hrly ad a routine.Assess for
infection.
Give parents health education.
7. Management of Home
Educate the mother about sign and symptoms of hypothermia and
prevention hypothermia.
Encourage KMC and exclusive breastfeeding
