  6. 6. How TEAMS work? Individual, Team and Task
  7. 7. Work Group  A group that interacts primarily to share information and to make decisions to help each group member perform within his or her area of responsibility. Group vs Team (work) Work Team  A group whose individual efforts result in a performance that is greater than the sum of the individual inputs.
  8. 8. Group vs Team (work)
  9. 9. Example - 1  Outside the canteen there's a group of people waiting in a lunch queue.  They are all there for the same reason.  Are they a team? YES / NO (NO) We agree. These people have a common purpose, but they're not working together to achieve it! They're not a team. What is a TEAM?
  10. 10. Example - 2  We are in the boardroom.  There are seven directors on the Board.  They meet four times a year.  Are they a team? YES / NO (YES) We agree. It doesn't matter how often the Board meets they still work together to a common purpose. They're a team. What is a TEAM?
  11. 11. Example - 3  In the call centre,  60 staff are answering customer calls.  Are they a team? YES / NO (NO) We agree. We'd argue that 60 people is too many to be a manageable team. A group this size would split into smaller teams. What is a TEAM?
  12. 12. Example - 4  In the Sales & Marketing Department of EuroMotors,  Mr. Ashira is holding a section meeting.  He's briefing the seven members of his workgroup on sales.  Is this workgroup a team? YES / NO (YES) We agree. The workgroup is a classic team, so long as everyone's working towards the same purpose What is a TEAM?
  13. 13.  Work teams comprise fewer than 10 people who: – Have a common purpose – Are interdependent  Teams can be: – Hierarchical, with a strong leader – Participative, with shared decisions and management – A mixture of both the above What is a TEAM?
  14. 14.  A team is defined as a group (a collection of people) who interact to achieve a common goal  Participants in an effective team care about the group's well-being. They skillfully combine appropriate individual talents with a positive team spirit to achieve results. What is TEAMWORK
  15. 15. Team Mission and Vision  The driving force and common understanding behind every team is a clear mission and vision. Team Operating Processes  To accomplish tasks effectively and efficiently, good teams develop operating processes such as sequential steps Teamwork Process Define Problem Collect Data Analyze Problem Develop Solutions Trial Implemen tation Full Implemen tation
  16. 16.  Shared Goals - Teams strive to accomplish a set of common goals. Rather than focusing on the goals of one or two individuals  Problem Solving - teams usually consist of employees with different skill sets  Productivity - increased productivity  Cooperation - teamwork satisfies a need for socialization with fellow employees. Effective teamwork requires that each member listen and participate. Objectives of Teamwork
  17. 17.  Distributing the workload  Reinforcing individual capabilities  Creating participation and involvement  Making better decisions  Feeling like we play a part in the work being done  Generating a diversity of ideas, etc. Benefits of Teamwork
  18. 18. Teams have become the latest management obsession. They're the corporate equivalent of a Visa card: they're everywhere you want to be. Managers, school principals everywhere in the world are striving to set up efficient teamwork procedures in their establishments. Article of Nada's ESL Island – Resource for Teachers & Student
