2. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the new, universal set of goals, targets and
indicators that UN member states will be expected to use to frame their agendas and political
policies over the next 15 years. The SDGs follow and expand on the millennium development
goals (MDGs), which were agreed by governments in 2001 and are due to expire at the end of
2015.
The Sustainable Development Goals will be truly universal in nature – they will apply to all
countries, and all sectors.
In the post-2015 development era, multi-stakeholder partnerships are expected to play an
increasingly important role in the implementation of sustainable development.
The proposed Sustainable Development Goal 17, which reads “Strengthen the means of
implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development”,
recognizes multi-stakeholder partnerships as important vehicles for mobilizing and sharing
knowledge, expertise, technologies and financial resources to support the achievement of the
sustainable development goals in all countries, particularly developing countries.
3. This Financing for Development course has been successfully designed to allow the
world at large to acknowledge and understand the big financing needs that must be met in
order to achieve the SDGs.
For this project work, I have decided to focus and address on SDG Goal-4 which is Quality
Education, that I believe if achieved properly through adequate financing and development,
will directly and indirectly influence ALL other goals positively.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Good Jobs And Economic Growth (Goal-8) :
Quality education has time and again proved to have contributed towards getting
good jobs which subsequently improves economic growth. Quality education leads to
skill enhancement, and skilled workforce can earn and send more money as
remittance than unskilled ones, thus contributing to the economic growth bigger
way.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Clean Water and Sanitation (Goal-6) :
Quality education makes people aware about the importance of clean water and
sanitation. This awareness shapes behavior of people. People learn to better
manage themselves and their water resources.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Good Health (Goal-3) :
Quality education inform people about health issues and informed people tend to
take better care of their health.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Partnership For The Goals (Goal-17) :
Quality education enlighten people. Once enlightened, people tend to behave
rationally and understand the value of partnership better.
4. Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Innovation and Infrastructure (Goal-9) :
Quality education widen the horizon of a person, helps to think and imagine more
critically and in depth, which then leads to innovation. One doesn't need to be a
rocket scientist to understand what potentials innovative people hold, from
designing infrastructures to solving social problems.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Protect The Planet (Goal-13) :
Quality education can make us more knowledgeable about our planet and help us
better interact with it in sustainable manner. That way we will not only protect our
beloved planet but also ourselves.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Clean Energy (Goal-7) :
Quality education makes it clear why clean energy is important.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Responsible Consumption (Goal-12) :
Enlightenment through quality education tend to bring qualitative change in
people's lives and shape behavior positively. Responsible behavior should lead to
responsible consumption as has always been the trend.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on No Hunger (Goal-2) :
Quality education should be able to teach people how to better manage
resources/factors of production so not to fall in the hunger trap. It is very rare to
find educated people suffering from hunger wherever it is in the world.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on No Poverty (Goal-1) :
Quality education can make a person intelligent and help make wise decision in their
life and it should be able to keep poverty at bay.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Reduced Inequality (Goal-10) :
Quality education, by increasing employability and other opportunities increases
income for people which in the long run reduces inequality.
5. Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Life Below Water (Goal-14) :
Quality education makes people sensible, especially with regards to their
interaction with the nature and environment. This behavior change should make
people care about life below water.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Life on Land (Goal-15) :
With better understanding through quality education about other life form on land
and their importance, people will be expected to behave in a manner congenial to
balanced coexistence.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Gender Equality (Goal-5) :
Quality education removes prejudice and other forms of discrimination by making
people sensible, understanding and respectful.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Sustainable Cities and Communities :
Quality education leads to further knowledge creation and knowledge sharing. As
more and more people become aware about the importance of sustainability, the
cumulative force and effort by the people will ultimately turn cities and
communities sustainable.
Influence of Quality Education(Goal-4) on Peace and Justice (Goal-16) :
It's the quality education lead enlightenment that will make sense prevail in the
people and in their leaders. This cumulative wise sense is what we call
commonsense. Once commonsense become common, peace and justice will get
priority over anything!
6. Present scenario:
Wide disparity among educational institutions within cities, countries even continents in
terms of quality and infrastructure.
Only rich have access to quality education as good institutions are becoming too
expensive
Good institution are not sufficient in numbers to accommodate large demand
Rural people are being deprived from quality education as most good institutions are in
and around big cities
Huge gap exist in terms of quality and content between developed and developing
world
Huge scope for inefficiency and corruptions especially in the developing world where
monitoring system is weak
As majority cannot access quality education, it gives rise to discrimination
Desired way forward:
Realizing the importance of quality education for all to achieve the SDGs effectively
Development of a more uniformed quality education delivery system for the entire
world through partnership and collaboration among countries and institutions of
excellence by leveraging technology.
This particular MOOC from World Bank Group is a great example of how technology can be
used to provide quality learning opportunities to people all around the world in an efficient and
uniformed manner. 25000+ participants from 198 countries!
7. Requirements to achieve the goal:
Efficient delivery model and evaluation design connecting all the dots
Increasing budget allocation for education
Exploring all sort of funding options: Internal revenue, ODA, loans, Development bonds,
Diaspora bonds etc
Financing the development of :
Infrastructures: worldwide fast internet connectivity, Multimedia classrooms, e-Library
Skill enhancement/training of teachers
Production of quality learning materials, customization of content based on language
and culture
Development will only be possible if it builds on some basic principles like:
Shared responsibility
Shared solidarity
Respect
Thank you
