PersonalStatement Seeking a teaching and/or a managerial role in science where I can
put my experience both as a teacher and head of department to good
use. I am motivated, inspirational and committed to education and

Responsibilities
I have responsibility for a team of 6 other biologists, one of whom is
our technician also. Since she is untrained in teaching I am currently
mentoring her through her first year. The HoD posts I have occupied
cover a range of professional and managerial tasks as well as normal
classroom teaching including:
I have served on a number of committees including ICT, discipline,
fire safety and plagiarism committees
curriculum design, implementation and articulation from
K to 12;
providing employment references for staff and students;
providing UCAS and Naviance references for students;
meeting with other HoDs and the management;
organising and chairing departmental meetings;
staff review and development;
quality assurance and CPD assignment;
health and safety;
organising outdoor activities and trips, developing links with
the outdoor education and CARE departments;
mentoring both staff and student teachers;
budget and purchasing;
reading, editing and validating end of term reports;
physical and ICT maintenance of the department;
ICT provision and training;
recruitment, interviewing and hiring staff;
liaising with alumni, fund raising and awareness raising;
meeting with parents and sponsors;
student discipline;
acting as an advisor to students.

Activities
I am trained to work with Health and Safety and associated risk
assessments and have training to level 3 COSHH which permits
culturing and sub-culturing of microorganisms.
I was a marker in Computing Studies for the SQA, the Scottish exam
authority from 1998 to 2008. I have marked at all levels of the award
except the Advanced Higher.
I have written Biology examination papers for “Perfect Papers”, a
commercial examination producer.
I have led computer training classes in all aspects of ICT for staff and
students; I have expertise in Microsoft and other products. I have
advised in purchasing of equipment and in the setting up and
maintenance of equipment.
I attended the international recruitment fair in Iowa in 2008 and
recruited several excellent teachers. I appointed all but one of the
staff of the Woodstock Science department during my tenure.

of the first beacon high schools accredited by the Beijing Municipal
Government. The International Curriculum Centre teaches the
Cambridge CIE awards of IGCSE and A level to Chinese students from
years 11-13 aiming for international tertiary education. It has a high
level of success at placing students in top universities worldwide
including Cambridge, Oxford and the American Ivy League universities.

Islay High School is a non-denominational comprehensive school
which serves the Scottish islands of Islay and Jura which are locate off

Kilsyth Academy is a non-denominational school serving Kilsyth and
the surrounding area, including some communities in East
Dunbartonshire Council. At the time the roll was around 900. More
than 40% of pupils were transported to school by bus each day.

Communityactivities I was on the board and occasionally chairman of Ileach Ltd for 16
years, a local newspaper with a turnover of over 100,000 GBP per
annum and a permanent staff of five.
I was a member of the Lions Club of Islay for 18 years serving as
secretary from 1992 to 1996, continuing as an ordinary member until
leaving Islay.
I took part in a wide range of activities at Woodstock benefiting the
residential students.
I have piloted and produced the first Yearbook for RDFZ. I have
supported and advised the “Bean Project”.
I am active in the local church assisting in many activities, I do not
proselytise.
