New Skill-Level Icon for VS Maps

  2. 2. What’s the Idea?In the last few years the Lean topic has expanded toinclude not only Lean tools but also an underlyingLean management process. The latter may currentlybe best represented by the “Toyota Kata” researchand practice routines. This is a beneficialdevelopment because both technical and socialelements are important for Lean transformation. To help get the issue of skill development through deliberatepractice into the minds of management, lets get it on the mapValue Stream Mapping (VSM) has become an indispensible toolin Lean deployment. Interestingly, however, VSM visualizesprimarily technical issues of material & information flow. Itdoesn’t currently show behavioral/skill capability.I’d like to propose that we expand the suite of VSM icons toinclude an indication of Improvement Kata skill level (current andfuture state) at the individual processes in a value stream. Please take a look and let us know what you think…Rick Fleming2v1.0
  3. 3. The Improvement KataThe Improvement Kata is a systematic and scientific trainingroutine that activates and mobilizes people’s creative capabilitiesto achieve challenging goals. It’s a means of developing solutionsand meeting challenges along uncertain paths, and models themanagement context within which Toyotas Lean tools wereintended to be applied. The pattern of the Improvement Kata can be taught to anyone, but to learn it you have to practice it. It’s a skill you develop.3v1.0

  8. 8. Whose IK skill levelshould appear on a VS map? With regard to Improvement Kata skill level the key personis, of course, the coach. In other words, the skill level of theprocess owner and their coach should appear on the VSmap. Typically this would be the supervisor or manager andtheir manager.Process OwnerSupervisor/ManagerProcess AManager8v1.0
  9. 9. How Would this be Used?1. On the Current State Map include the IK skill levelof supervisors/managers.2. On the Future State Map add the dots to showthe target IK skill level of process supervisors andmanagers as a Challenge Condition.3. Apply the normal Improvement Kata / CoachingKata routine -- using the 5 Questions & PDCACycles Record – to develop the next target skilllevel at each process.9v1.0
