  • I am very aware of the limitations of the integration with Siebel, having used it several times. The solution proposed was very successful in version history management, and I would say that developer adoption was very good. Depends on the developer of course.

  • SVN/CVS are suitable when your source is file based like Java or C++ but are completely inadequate for Siebels Object and siebel repository.
    1) The integration is with Siebel tools not the repository db (not seamless)
    2) A sif (XML) is checked in to SVN/CVS
    3) So developers has to eyeball the XML along with all the unecessary attributes tags to find changes.
    4) You can not query like Siebel Tools.
    Just some reason why very few projects even bother implementing SVN/CVS.
    When its deployed the adoption by Siebel developers is practically zero.
    However there is a lot a value to get the version history.

  3. 3. How does it work? • When moving Projects from Local to Server – Siebel Tools generates SIF Files automatically – These files can be sent automatically to your version control software – They can be stored in specific folders, with labels, comments etc
  4. 4. Configure Siebel Tools for Version Control • Install also Version Control Client • Create and Configure SRCCTRL.BAT – Can be found on Metalink – Set up the Integration options in Siebel Tools • Configuration – Of the install folder – Of Username & Password for VSS
  5. 5. Step Two - Verification • Connect to Visual SourceSafe • Create any folders, layout
  6. 6. Step Three – Use Siebel Tools • Siebel Tools Check In / Check Out – No extra things to do • SIF File generated and sent to the Version Control • Possibility to Label, comment files as appropriate • Can be filtered and exported from your Version Management Tool
  7. 7. Step Four – Examples of Usage • Export all SIF Files from your Version Control System according to a Date • Export all SIF Files from your Version Control System that have the comment / label ‘TO TEST’ • Import these SIF files into an environment and Compile All
